Navy Hospital Corpsman killed after shooting two sailors Tuesday near Ft. Detrick

updated 4:21 AM, Apr 07, 2021

FREDERICK, Md. — One person is dead and two others are injured following an active shooter incident in Frederick, Tuesday morning.

Police first got the call around 8:20 a.m. for shots fired inside a Navy office at the Riverside Tech Park on Progress Drive.

Two active U.S. Navy sailors were found suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both were flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma. One is in critical condition, the other was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon. Their names haven't been released.

According to Tommy Lamkin , a spokesman for the Naval Medical Research Center, the two sailors who were injured were hospital corpsmen and were co-workers with the shooter.

All three worked at the Biological Defense Research Directorate that belongs to the Naval Medical Research Center. Lamkin however, couldn’t speculate on the nature of their relationship.

“The command’s main focus is on casualty assistance making sure that family members have the resources available for counseling,” says Lamkin. “As well as for the staff that was there and that was affected. The command is focused on letting the investigation happen.”

Following the shooting, the gunman drove to nearby Ft. Detrick where he sped by security at the Nalin Pond gate off Opposumtown Pike.

Within minutes Military Police stationed on-base fatally shot the suspect, when he brandished a rifle.

Officials later identified the gunman as 38-year-old U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman, Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, of Frederick.
