Family Pleads For Help In Missing Pregnant Woman Case

DENVER (CBS4) – A family is standing united in their search for a missing pregnant woman and taking their case to the public in hopes that someone knows something that might be helpful.

Kelsie Schelling disappeared last month. She was last seen the night of Feb. 4 in Pueblo after traveling there from Denver to meet her boyfriend Donthe Lucas.

Schelling’s mother Laura Saxton said earlier that day her daughter was in Denver for a doctor’s appointment, where she learned she was eight weeks pregnant with Lucas’ child. The family says Schelling went to Pueblo that night at the request of Lucas.

Family members said Monday morning in a news conference in Denver that since her disappearance Schelling’s bank account has been accessed and messages have been sent from her cellphone.

Schelling’s black Chevy Cruz was also caught on surveillance video in a Pueblo hospital parking lot three days after she disappeared, but Schelling isn’t seen in those images and her car in the days since then has not been located.

Schelling’s family says Lucas is refusing to speak with authorities and that they are “not satisfied” with his “original account of the events leading up to Kelsie’s disappearance.”



Donthe refused invitations to speak with CBS4 but his mother did so and said her son was arrested for identity theft for using Schelling’s credit card but claims the charges have been dropped. She also said their home and their car were searched by police.

Police so far won’t comment on Donthe’s involvement in the case. Documents regarding Donthe have been sealed by the courts.

Police said they are treating the case as a missing person case but they continue to interview people as part of their investigation.

Schelling’s family is offering a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest. They have also set up a website called HelpFindKelsie.com in hopes of getting tips from the public.

PUEBLO, Colo. - New court documents show Kelsie Schelling's boyfriend is considered a person of interest in the case – which contradicts earlier claims by the Pueblo Police Department.

Schelling’s parents filed a lawsuit earlier this year accusing Donthe Lucas of "wrongful death" and Pueblo police investigators of "deliberately obstructing" the investigation of the "killing" of the pregnant Denver woman.

The suit, which you can read here, says that Schelling was pregnant with Lucas' baby and alleges that Lucas and his mother coaxed Schelling into traveling from Denver to Pueblo on Feb. 4, 2013.

In the suit, Schelling's parents claim that Lucas killed Schelling, and with help from his mother and grandmother, attempted to cover it up.

In February 2015, KRDO.com reported that the lawsuit levied several allegations against the Pueblo Police Department. Among them:

Police went to Lucas' home and told him that he needed to go defend himself to the media while Schelling's family was holding a news conference.
Police repeatedly lied to Schelling's family and said that no evidence was found in Kelsie's car after it was recovered from St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center.
A detective admitted to lying to the family about whether evidence was found in the car.
Another detective said that a substance consistent with dry bodily fluids was recovered from the trunk of the car.
Police failed to search Lake Minnequa after receiving a tip that a fisherman found what appeared to be human remains.
Evidence stored in the police department's evidence room was never submitted for testing with the crime lab.
That after family members began their own investigation, police were hostile toward them, lied to them and intimidated them.
That Pueblo police deliberately tried to destroy evidence, mishandled evidenced and failed to investigate leads.

PUEBLO, Colo. — Police in Pueblo made an arrest in the murder Kelsie Schelling Friday. Schelling disappeared and was killed in 2013.

The suspect, Donthe Isiah Lucas, 25, was already in custody at the Pueblo County Detention Center on unrelated charges.

Investigators said he faces the charge of Murder in the First Degree and is being held without bond in the Schelling case.

“But still no Kelsie, I’m heartbroken,” Schelling’s mother, Laura Saxton said in response to the arrest of Lucas.

Lucas was arrested at Denver International Airport on November 13, 2017 in connection to a robbery investigation from September in Pueblo.

Pueblo Police said Lucas and his brother, Duschon, robbed a man while he was sitting in his vehicle in the 1100 block of West Mesa Avenue.

PUEBLO, Colo. – The mother of Donthe Lucas, who on Friday was charged with first-degree murder in Kelsie Schelling’s disappearance, was arrested for robbery in Pueblo hours after police said her son was now involved in a homicide investigation.

Sara Lucas, 49, was arrested at around 8 p.m. for allegedly robbing and assaulting a man in front of the Lucas family Pueblo home the evening of Sept. 1. Both 19-year-old Dushon Lucas and 25-year-old Donthe Lucas were arrested in November for the same robbery, according to the Pueblo Police Department.

Detectives investigating the robbery interviewed Lucas after his arrest at DIA. According to an arrest warrant, Lucas denied he stole money from the victim but said he “may have went too far” when he claimed he was fighting back against racial slurs he says the victim hurled at him and his family.

PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - The sister of Kelsie Schelling's alleged killer is now in custody, making her the fourth member of the Lucas family to now sit behind bars.

11 News confirmed Monday that Desiree Lucas was rearrested for bond revocation, joining her brothers and her mother in the Pueblo County Jail. The 19-year-old is facing charges for allegedly chasing a girl with a knife.

Desiree's brother Donthe, 25, was arrested last week for allegedly murdering his pregnant girlfriend Schelling nearly five years ago. To date, her remains have not been found.

At the time his arrest for Schelling's murder, Donthe had already been in custody for more than two weeks for his alleged role in a September robbery. Donthe and Desiree's brother Duschon was also arrested in November for the same robbery.

Rounding out the family, the siblings' mother Sara Lucas was arrested Friday for the same September robbery. She was arrested the same day Donthe was arrested in the Schelling case.

Roxann Martinez, Witness In Donthe Lucas Murder Trial Of Kelsie Schelling, Gunned Down In Denver

DENVER (CBS4)– A woman considered a star witness in the Donthe Lucas murder trial of Kelsie Schelling was shot and killed in Denver last week. Denver police said that Roxann Martinez’s death is not believed to be connected to the murder trial.

Martinez was shot and killed at the intersection of E. Kenyon Dr. and S. Wabash St. at 11 p.m. on Feb 25. The Denver medical examiner ruled her death a homicide from a gunshot wound.


“Denver police officers were notified of a woman down in the streets,” Denver Police Department spokesperson Christine Downs told CBS4’s Dillon Thomas.

Police would not release many details about the investigation as a suspect has not been identified publicly.

However, many have raised concerns about the reason for Martinez’s murder, citing her plans to testify in a murder trial.

Martinez was supposed to testify for the prosecution in the ongoing murder trial in Pueblo. Lucas has been charged with murdering Schelling, even though her body has never been found. Lucas pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in August 2018.

When she disappeared in February 2013, Schelling was pregnant and was reportedly traveling from Denver to Pueblo to talk to Lucas about it.

Messages on Schelling’s phone showed she texted Lucas that she was pregnant, and his replies indicated he was unhappy.

On the day she reportedly disappeared, GPS on her phone showed it traveled to the same location in Pueblo as Lucas’ phone.

CBS4 was on scene in 2017 when investigators dug up the yard of a home where Lucas used to live. However, nothing was found. Schilling’s body has never been recovered.

While some friends, and others in the public, have suggested Martinez’s death was a result of her plans to testify in the case, Denver Police said they do not have evidence to back that claim at this time.

Jury finds Donthe Lucas guilty of first-degree murder in death of Kelsie Schelling

A Pueblo County jury found Donthe Lucas guilty Monday of first-degree murder in the 2013 death of his girlfriend, Kelsie Schelling, after just a few hours of deliberations.

The jury found Lucas guilty of first-degree murder in a verdict that was delivered just after 4 p.m. Monday. He will face life in prison without the possibility of parole — the mandatory sentence for first-degree murder convictions.

Lucas’s defense counsel rested its case without calling any witnesses Monday morning before prosecutors delivered their closing arguments, arguing that all of the evidence presented at the multi-week trial showed Lucas killed Schelling, despite her body never having been found.

The defense argued that the case was “the biggest stretch in Colorado history” and reminded jurors that no DNA had been found and Schelling’s body had not been recovered.
