Milwaukee police release name of officer shot, injured in exchange of gunfire with man fleeing crash
Updated 5:51 p.m. CT Feb. 7, 2020

Milwaukee police have identified an officer who was shot this week during an exchange of gunfire with a man running from a vehicle that had crashed during a police chase.

Officer Robert Parks, 32, was shot in the leg
. His partner, Officer Adam Maritato, 33, was not injured, according to a Friday news release.

Major Artis, the 24-year-old man accused of shooting the officer, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound soon after the incident, police said.

Milwaukee police released the names and photos of the officers and Artis on Friday.

Artis' family has said they do not believe he would kill himself. A relative told the Journal Sentinel Friday his mother "hates that an officer got shot," but remains concerned because she has not been contacted by police, nor seen evidence showing Artis was the shooter.

According to initial information provided by Milwaukee police:

Officers saw a vehicle speeding and driving recklessly shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday near North Teutonia Avenue at West Roosevelt Drive.

Officers tried to pull the vehicle over. Instead, the driver took off and led police on a chase.

About a minute later, the vehicle crashed into a pole on Teutonia Avenue, just north of Hampton Avenue.

Three men ran from the vehicle. Two of them, ages 26 and 31, were arrested.

The third man who ran from the vehicle, later identified as Artis, shot at the two officers, hitting Parks.

Parks and Maritato returned fire. Artis continued to run away.

Officer found Artis about an hour later, at 2:07 a.m., inside of a garage. He appeared to have shot himself, police said. A gun was found at the scene.

Parks was taken to a hospital for treatment and released later that day.
