4 People Found Shot, Killed Execution-Style In Southwest Philadelphia Basement, Police Say
November 19, 2018 at 10:00 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Four people were found shot and killed execution-style in a basement in Southwest Philadelphia on Monday afternoon. Philadelphia police say two men and two women were found in the basement of the home on the 5100 block of Malcolm Street with one gunshot wound each to the head.

They were all pronounced dead at the scene.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross says the bodies were discovered when officers were conducting a wellness check shortly after noon. A relative called police after not hearing from one of the victims. The relative who called officers first found the door slightly open, but thought little of it because of the ongoing work.

“All four of these individuals were executed,” said Ross, adding that this was an “absolutely evil thing to do.”

The ages of the victims range from 20s to 40. Ross said the two male victims appear to be related.

Police scoured the immediate area for businesses or homes with surveillance video.

“We’re interviewing witnesses, family members, to see if we can determine what this might be about as well as checking potential surveillance cameras in the area to uncover if anybody was leaving they residence around 10 or 11 o’clock,” said Ross.

Ross said a neighbor heard three or four bangs around 10 p.m. on Sunday, but because the home is under renovation, neighbors who heard the sound thought nothing of it. It’s now likely those bangs were gunfire.

This is a neighborhood that is experiencing gentrification. Ross said his officers are rarely on this particular block because it is normally very quiet.

“This block here is normally known as non-violent,” said neighbor Lucille Walker. “I’m really surprised to come home and here this.”

Beth Harrell’s mother lives across the street on Baltimore Avenue and is disturbed at what happened.

“To have something that happened right across the street is kind of scary and I want to make sure it’s nobody we know,” she said.

“This neighborhood is on its way back. People are investing, so small businesses are coming back and this is something that does not happen. It’s a tragedy. We’re trying to reach out the families to make sure we can do whatever we can to help them,” said committee person Greg Thompson,

No arrests have yet been made and no weapon has been recovered.

3 Victims In Execution-Style Quadruple Homicide Found Without Clothes In Southwest Philadelphia Basement
By Joe Holden
November 20, 2018 at 9:28 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police are expected to release more details about the execution-style killings of four people in Southwest Philadelphia as three of the victims have been positively identified. Two men and two women were found shot and killed in the basement of a home on the 5100 block of Malcolm Street on Monday and three of the victims were not wearing clothes when their bodies were found.

Police say they are in the process of notifying relatives.

It hasn’t been revealed yet what may have led to the deadly violence.

Police say neighbors reported hearing bangs around 10 or 11 p.m. on Sunday and investigators believe what people heard were gunshots.

Those neighbors thought nothing of the noise, writing it off as ongoing renovation work inside the property.

Investigators also say, aside from the front door being open slightly, there isn’t evidence to suggest there was a forced entry.

Homicide detectives are working to pin down surveillance video to give them some idea if they could make out anybody coming or going from the home.

The home was being rented to one of the male victims.

4 Shot Execution-Style After Being Led Into Philly Basement
Published Nov 19, 2018 at 1:20 PM | Updated at 12:04 AM EST on Nov 21, 2018
By Dan Stamm and David Chang

Four people were found shot to death execution-style in the basement of a Southwest Philadelphia home Monday.

Each person, found just after noon in a home along the 5100 block of Malcolm Street, just off Baltimore Avenue, was shot in the head, Philadelphia police said.

The victims were Maurice Taylor, 31, his half-brother Akeem Mattox, 28, Tiyaniah Hopkins, 20, and a Janell Doe-isha, police said.

Preliminary information made it appear the victims were "led down to the basement" then each shot in the head, Police Commissioner Richard Ross told reporters Monday.

It was "the worst crime scene" Police Inspector Derrick Wood ever saw, the 20-year veteran of the force said.

Sources told NBC10 there was no forced entry into the home, no signs of a struggle, no weapons recovered and no witnesses.

"That's what's so absolutely evil about it that you would take people downstairs and absolutely execute them," a "heart-broken" Ross said Tuesday.

Taylor and Mattox were living in the home while it was being renovated, according to police. Family members described the two men as loving fathers.

"The family is devastated," Greg Brinkley, the uncle of one of the victims, said. "He wasn't that type of guy."

A neighbor heard loud bangs late Sunday night and thought it to be construction work at the property, Ross said. Investigators believe those sounds could have been the fatal gunshots.

Police came out for a wellness check at the home Monday after a relative found the door slightly ajar, investigators said.

There's no word yet on a motive for the shooting or possible suspect(s).

"We're hoping that we will get some tips to get us some direction because we absolutely have to bring this person or persons to justice," Ross said. "We can't have individuals like this walking the streets."

Tuesday night, loved ones released balloons in honor of Mattox. His mother, stepfather and siblings stood before the crowd, overwhelmed by their support.

"My nieces have lost their father," Mattox's sister said. "When is this going to stop?"

The victims' young daughters attended Tuesday's tribute.

"They're crying for all day long," the girls' grandmother, Harriet Rice, told NBC10. "They want their dad. They want to see their dad. They ask can they see him again."

If you have any information on the murders, please call Philadelphia police.

Police Identify 4 Victims, Including Teen Girl, In Execution-Style Quadruple Homicide In Southwest Philly Basement
November 26, 2018 at 10:00 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police have released the identities of the four victims who were shot and killed execution-style in a Southwest Philadelphia basement last week. Two men and two women were found in the basement of the home on the 5100 block of Malcolm Street with one gunshot wound each to the head on Nov. 19.

The victims have been identified as 17-year-old Yaleah Hall, 20-year-old Tiyaniah Rakele Hopkins, 28-year-old Akeen Mattox, and 31-year-old William Taylor. Mattox and Taylor were brothers, while Yaleah and Hopkins were sisters. They were all pronounced dead at the scene.

Fambly members say Mattox was a father of three.

“Akeen was special, he was a special person,” said Naseen Martin. “He was strong, and to me and to his family, he was so much more than just a relative or a brother, he was just a special person.”

“I got to look at his kids in their eyes and explain to them why their dad isn’t here, why somebody felt there was a need to take his life,” Keshia Wilson, Mattox’s sister.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross says the bodies were discovered when officers were conducting a wellness check shortly after noon. A relative called police after not hearing from one of the victims.

“All four of these individuals were executed,” said Ross, adding that this was an “absolutely evil thing to do.”

Ross said a neighbor heard three or four bangs around 10 p.m. on Sunday, but because the home is under renovation, neighbors who heard the sound thought nothing of it. It’s now likely those bangs were gunfire.

No arrests have yet been made and there is also no motive for the shooting.

Now the family is pleading for anyone with information to just come forward.

“If anybody knows anything to just come forward. You can call and make an anonymous tip it’s not ratting when it’s somebody that you care about,” said Wilson.

1 charged, 2 in custody for quadruple murder in Southwest Philadelphia

11/29/18
SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) --
One person has been charged and two others are in custody in connection with a quadruple murder in Southwest Philadelphia.

Officials said 32-year-old Jahlil Porter, of the 200 block of East Ashmead Street, has been charged with murder, robbery and other offenses. Police withheld the names of the other two men in custody until charges are filed.

Philadelphia Police spokesman Capt. John Ryan said investigators believe the two male victims - 31-year-old William Taylor and 28-year-old Akeem Mattox - had found a stash of drugs while they were renovating homes.

Ryan said he did not believe the drugs came from the home where the four were found shot, but it was unclear what home the stash was found in.

Ryan said at least one of the men, who were raised together and called themselves stepbrothers, contacted one of the suspects to try to sell the stash of drugs.

The deal turned into a robbery and then a murder, he said.

The men and two women- 20-year-old Tiyaniah Hopkins and 17-year-old Yaleah Hall, who were sisters- were found on Nov. 19 "executed" in the basement of the home after a family member called and asked for a welfare check.

Neighbors later told police they had heard loud bangs the night before, which officers believe were the sounds of gunfire.

"They were all laid on the ground and executed," Ryan said.

Drug Stash Leads To Execution-Style Killings Of 4 People In Southwest Philadelphia Basement, Police Say
November 29, 2018 at 2:35 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Three suspects are in custody in the execution-style killings of four people in a Southwest Philadelphia basement, police said in a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the murders were over a drug stash.

One of the suspects in custody has been identified as 32-year-old Jahlil Porter.

Two men and two women were found in the basement of the home on the 5100 block of Malcolm Street with one gunshot wound each to the head on Nov. 19.

The victims were identified as 17-year-old Yaleah Hall, 20-year-old Tiyaniah Rakele Hopkins, 28-year-old Akeen Mattox, and 31-year-old William Taylor. Mattox and Taylor were brothers, while Yaleah and Hopkins were sisters. They were all pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said during Thursday’s press conference the killings were over a drug deal gone bad. Police say while Mattox and Taylor were renovating the home, they came upon a drug stash. One of the victims tried to broker a sale, but the suspects came to the home with the intention of robbing them, said police.

“The acts that they committed are beyond comprehension to me that you could do this to four people, four human beings,” said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross, adding that it appears three of the victims “were collateral damage.”

Ross indicated that the drug stash the victims were killed over was small.

“If, at some point, we are able to disclose that, it’s going to blow your mind how insignificant it was in the grand scheme of dealing with life and just how little these individuals had in regard for anybody else’s life,” the commissioner said.

The bodies were discovered when officers were conducting a wellness check shortly after noon. A relative called police after not hearing from one of the victims.

Porter has been charged with murder, robbery and other related charges. Two other men are in custody in relation to the investigation.

Man Pleads Guilty In Connection To Execution-Style Murders Of 4 People In Southwest Philadelphia Basement
By CBS3 Staff
January 2, 2020 at 8:20 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — There is a guilty plea from one of the men who was charged in the execution-style murders of four people. Thirty-one-year-old Robert Long admitted to being part of the murders of two sisters and two stepbrothers.

It happened in November 2018 in the basement of a home in Southwest Philadelphia.

Prosecutors say Long and two other men went to a house that stepbrothers Akeem Mattox and Maurice Taylor-Williams were renovating so they could rob the pair of drugs.

Also inside the home were 17-year-old Yaleah Hall and 20-year-old Tiyaniah Hopkins.

All four were found shot in the back of their heads in the basement of the home the next day.
