March 3, 2017 9:48 AM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The FBI said an arrest has been made in bomb threats against the Anti-Defamation League and other Jewish institutions.

Juan Thompson, 31, of St. Louis, Missouri, is accused of calling in threats to the ADL headquarters on Third Avenue in Manhattan late last month and at least eight Jewish Community Centers.

The threats were made as part of a campaign to harass his ex-girlfriend, according to a criminal complaint.

Former journalist arrested for threats against Jewish centers
March 3, 2017 at 2:02 PM

The FBI arrested a former journalist on Friday and charged him in connection with the threats to several Jewish community centers.

Juan M. Thompson, a former reporter for The Intercept, co-founded by Glenn Greenwald, was arrested in St. Louis and charged with cyberstalking an ex-girlfriend, and then communicating threats to Jewish centers around the country in her name

The criminal complaint says that in 2016, Thompson, 31, also emailed false allegations about the ex-girlfriend to her employer, and in another email accused her of possessing child pornography.

On Thompson's Twitter account, he identified his target as "Francesca" and wrote on Feb. 24, "Know any good lawyers? Need to stop this nasty/racist #whitegirl I dated who sent a bomb threat in my name & wants me to be raped in jail."

Statement on the Arrest of Former Intercept Reporter Juan Thompson
The Intercept

March 3 2017, 8:28 a.m.

We were horrified to learn this morning that Juan Thompson, a former employee of The Intercept, has been arrested in connection with bomb threats against the ADL and multiple Jewish Community Centers in addition to cyberstalking. These actions are heinous and should be fully investigated and prosecuted. We have no information about the charges against Thompson other than what is included in the criminal complaint. Thompson worked for The Intercept from November 2014 to January 2016, when he was fired after we discovered that he had fabricated sources and quotes in his articles.

Greenwald, who is openly gay, lives in Rio de Janeiro, the hometown of his partner, David Miranda.[6][72][109][110][111] Greenwald said in 2011 that his residence in Brazil was a result of the Defense of Marriage Act, an American law barring federal recognition of same-sex marriages which was overturned by the US Supreme Court two years later. The law had prevented his partner from receiving a visa to reside in the United States with him.[109]

In 2016, Miranda was elected to the Rio de Janeiro City Council as part of the PSOL party.[112]

Greenwald comes from a Jewish background, albeit largely non-practicing, and was never Bar Mitzvahed, stating that "My parents tried to inculcate me a little bit into organized Judaism, but they weren't particularly devoted to that, and my grandparents were, but it just never took hold." He says that he does believe in "the spiritual and mystical part of the world", including practicing yoga, but his moral precepts "aren't informed in any way by religious doctrine or, like, organized religion or anything."[113]

Reporter gets 5 years in prison for threatening Jewish centers

Juan Thompson, a disgraced former reporter for The Intercept, was slammed with a five-year prison sentence Wednesday for phoning in bomb threats at Jewish community centers in a twisted revenge plot against his ex-girlfriend.

The jilted journo was led from court with his ex’s angry courtroom kiss-off ringing in his ears.

“This is domestic terror in the literal sense,” Francesca Rossi said in a tearful, scathing victim impact statement in Manhattan federal court.

“Juan devoted over an entire year to destroying my life,” she said of how Thompson made more than a dozen bomb threats around the country in her name.

The threats included a February 2017 email to a Jewish community center at an undisclosed location in Manhattan in which he promised a “Jewish Newtown.”

“He painted me as an anti-Semite, a racist, a drunk, a slut, a drug dealer, a child pornographer, and a gun runner,” she said of his twisted communications to her and others.

“He did everything that he could to instill terror in my life. Computers, phones and tablets all became the apparatus for his abuse.”

Thompson, 31, of St. Louis, worked for The Intercept from November 2014 to January 2016, when he was fired for fabricating sources and quotes in stories. He was dumped by Rossi the following July, and soon began waging his cyber-war against her.

In addition to making bomb threats in her name — including one to the Midtown offices of the Anti-Defamation League — Thompson sent Rossi naked photos of herself and threatened to make them public.

He also contacted a national children’s welfare organization with false claims that she had kiddie porn on her phone.

He pleaded guilty in June to cyberstalking and making fake bomb threats.

“I apologize to Ms. Rossi for the harm, pain and embarrassment I’ve caused her,” Thompson told Judge Kevin Castel on Wednesday in a failed bid for leniency.

“I screwed up royally,” he conceded of his misdeeds.

Castel agreed, calling Thompson “a horror.”

“He used the gifts he had, the intelligence he had , as weapons against other people,” the judge said of Thompson, who’d risen from the slums of St. Louis to attend Vassar College.

The Intercept.com had disavowed Thompson upon learning of the bomb threat charges in March, calling his actions “heinous.”

Ex reported bomb-threatening journalist for revenge porn
By Tamar Lapin

A Brooklyn woman whose journalist ex-boyfriend called in bomb threats in her name as part of a twisted plot had reported him for revenge porn and other harassment almost two dozen times before he was finally arrested, she said in a report published Tuesday.

Francesca Rossi told The Associated Press that law enforcement didn’t collar her jilted ex, Juan Thompson, until almost a year after she started reporting him — only after he set off a national panic by threatening a dozen Jewish community centers in early 2017.

“It went on for months. I thought I was going to die, and no one could help me,” Rossi said. “In the end, the only way that my abuse was legitimized is because he went after such a large community of people and because there was so much hysteria over it.”

Thompson, 31, of St. Louis was sentenced to five years in prison in December 2017. According to the FBI, the disgraced former journalist unleashed his reign of terror after Rossi broke up with him.

At his sentencing, Rossi, 33, gave a scathing victim-impact statement saying her ex “devoted an entire year to ruining her life,” calling in the threats under her name, threatening to make nude pictures of her public and falsely reporting her for kiddie porn.

Police officials told AP that Rossi’s personal allegations against Thompson didn’t go anywhere because there was insufficient evidence to support charges.

Experts said her case is an example of how ill-equipped authorities are at handling cyber-crime, even with revenge-porn laws getting passed.

“The response by and large is: Ignore it, and turn off your computer,” said Danielle Citron, University of Maryland professor and author of “Hate Crimes in Cyberspace.”

But Rossi couldn’t ignore it, she said.

The social worker said Thompson, who was then working as a journalist for the Intercept, moved in to her Brooklyn apartment after almost two years of dating.

She said she quickly learned that Thompson was posing as her exes and sending her harassing texts to try to control her.

“Juan was going through all my stuff, and I had no idea,” she said. “He somehow gained access. I never gave him access to any of my passwords, but he had everything on me.”

Things only got worse once she broke up with him, she said.

He called, e-mailed and texted her relentlessly, sometimes posing as others, terrorized her family — including her 92-year-old grandmother — and even called and wrote her office, she said.

He also trashed her on social media and posted her information on a Web site where men promote violence against women.

“Technology gave him utter access to me,” she said. “Every time my phone buzzed, I felt sick. I mean, I thought he was going to kill me. I felt like my life was over.”

She couldn’t get a restraining order because she didn’t have his address, and cops at her local precinct closed her harassment case against him in Oct. 2016, AP said.

Rossi’s case was especially complex because Thompson used 25 different devices allowing him to mask his identity, making evidence gathering difficult, officials said.

Cops told Rossi they couldn’t help her until the threats became more severe, she said.

Meanwhile, the NYPD was investigating her for threats Thompson had made in her name.

Then, Thompson threatened to bomb dozens of Jewish community centers and was arrested in St. Louis. He pleaded guilty to hoax threats and cyberstalking.

The creep apologized to Rossi at his sentencing hearing, saying “I screwed up royally.”

Rossi wore a T-Shirt that read: “Believe women” in the courtroom.

“The police diminished my abuse because my life-threatening attacks came from phones and computers,” she said. “This is what domestic violence looks like now.”

Journalist who made bomb threats to frame ex may get lighter sentence
By Andrew Denney
April 10, 2019 | 1:10pm

A jilted former journalist who was sentenced to five years in prison for making fake bomb threats to Jewish community centers in a bid to frame his ex-girlfriend will get a new — and possibly lighter — sentence because he wasn’t properly served with his ex’s restraining order against him.

A federal appeals court in Manhattan ruled on Wednesday that Juan Thompson, who argues that he should receive a prison sentence of no more than three years and one month on his cyber-stalking conviction, will get another shot at sentencing before the same federal judge who hit Thompson with the maximum sentence.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit found that, because Thompson was not properly served with the restraining order, Judge Kevin Castel should have used a different range of possible sentences under the federal guidelines.

Those guidelines are not mandatory, however, and Castel could still go higher when he sentences Thompson anew.

The feds say that Thompson, who was fired from The Intercept for fabricating quotes, began his campaign of bomb threats against Jewish Community Centers and other Jewish institutions to get back at his ex for breaking up with him.

The former girlfriend, Francesca Rossi, said she had also reported Thompson for using revenge porn against her and other forms of harassment prior to his 2017 arrest.

Disgraced reporter re-sentenced to 5 years for phony bomb threats

A Manhattan federal court judge re-sentenced a former journalist to five years behind bars Monday for trying to frame his ex-girlfriend in a phony plot to bomb Jewish community centers — but not before the woman trashed him in court.

Juan Thompson committed acts of domestic violence and domestic terrorism,” Francesca Rossi told judge Kevin Castel of her ex, who avoided eye contact as his victim detailed his years of abuse.

Rossi detailed for the court how Thompson sent her mother death threats, blackmailed her with her own nude photos while demanding Bitcoin, and managed to evade service for nine separate restraining orders she’s filed since 2015.

She blasted him for “using the Jewish community as a tool” and said she still lives with a “sense of dread” — especially since he still tweets about her from prison.

“This was never no O.J. type s–t. I hated that white woman straightaway,” he tweeted back in April while in federal custody.

Rossi begged Castel to “keep me and others safe.”

The 34-year-old was sentenced to five years in prison in 2017 after he admitted to calling in 12 bomb threats — warning of a “Jewish Newtown” — to various Jewish community centers while attempting to pin the blame on Rossi.

Yet a higher court vacated his sentence in April after they determined Thompson had never been properly served with a restraining order and therefore would have faced less time under federal sentencing guidelines.

Thompson also addressed the judge Monday, blaming a “psycho-racial crisis” brought on by his time in media, where he was “immersed in whiteness and bouginess.”

The former reporter for The Intercept also apologized to the Jewish community, and said that he’d stopped eating meat in prison and was practicing yoga every day.

After imposing sentence, Castel said told Thompson he should be ashamed of himself.

“As an intelligent person, you should feel the shame associated with your conduct,” the judge said.

Thompson’s defense attorney Mark Gombiner declined to comment as he left court.
