Teens recorded attack instead of helping fatally stabbed student: cops

A Long Island teen was fatally stabbed at a strip mall near his high school as dozens of other students pulled out their cellphones to record the melee rather than to help him, police said.

Khaseen Morris, a 16-year-old senior at Oceanside High School, was stabbed once in the chest Monday afternoon during an apparent dispute over a girl. He later died at a hospital after many of the 50 to 70 teens who gathered nearby recorded the bloody attack and made no attempt to stop it, Nassau County police said at a news conference Tuesday.

“Kids stood there and didn’t help Khaseen,” Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick told reporters, according to Newsday. “They’d rather video. They videoed his death instead of helping him.”

Police are now looking for six to seven teens thought to have been involved in the attack after interviewing witnesses and reviewing footage posted on social media, including on Snapchat, as well as surveillance video from the nearby strip mall, Fitzpatrick said.

Morris, who was not armed during the stabbing, knew that the ex-boyfriend of a girl he walked home from a party on Sunday had been trying to find him to confront the teen, according to police.

Fitzpatrick called on those at the scene of the fatal attack to share what they know with detectives.

“The individuals who are responsible for this, if you’re not part and parcel to the murder of Khaseen Morris, now’s the time to get in touch with us and let us know who did this and why,” he told reporters. “If you were just coming here and thinking you were fighting, and then he got stabbed during that, you need to get out in front of that.”

Fitzpatrick continued: “After I put handcuffs on you, that ship has sailed.”

One of Morris’ friends, a 17-year-old teen, was also hurt during the attack and went to a hospital with a broken arm.

Morris’ sister, meanwhile, told Newsday that the ex-boyfriend of the girl he walked home over the weekend had sent him “threatening messages,” but he wasn’t so concerned about it and didn’t plan on either looking for a fight or running from one, either.

“No one knew he was going to bring a million people out there – and a knife,” Keyanna Morris said.

A candlelight vigil was held for Morris on Tuesday and another one is planned for Wednesday near a pizzeria where he was attacked. Those whose plan on attending should wear tie-dye shirts and “look groovy as hell,” organizers posted on Facebook.

Taj Woodruff, Haakim Mechan and Marquis Stephens

Seven more teenagers were arrested on Friday for their roles in the stabbing death of a Nassau County high school student earlier this month, authorities said.

The suspects — 19-year-old Haakim Mechan; 18-year-old Marquis Stephens; 18-year-old Javonte Neals; 17-year-old Taj Woodruff; 17-year-old Sean Merritt and two younger teenapers who were not named — were all hit with gang assault charges in the slaying.

Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder will formally announce the arrests related to the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Khaseen Morris at a press conference Saturday morning, authorities said.

Morris was knifed once in the chest near a strip mall by his high school after being attacked by a group of teens in an apparent beef over a girl on Sept. 16, police said.

Morris knew the ex-boyfriend of a girl he had walked home from a party earlier in the week was trying to confront him, police said.

As he suffered from the stab wound, teens recorded him with their cellphones instead of offering help, police said at the time.

“Kids stood there and didn’t help Khaseen,” Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick told reporters, Newsday reported. “They’d rather video. They videoed his death instead of helping him.”

Two days after the attack, police arrested Tyler Flach, 18, of Lido Beach and charged him with murder, authorities said.

After the slaying, police said they were searching for six to seven other teens in the attack after interviewing witnesses and reviewing footage posted on social media, including on Snapchat.

More Charges Filed Against Tyler Flach In Stabbing Death Of Khaseen Morris
October 31, 2019 at 5:48 pm

Mineola, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – More charges have been filed against a Long Island teenager accused in the brutal stabbing death of another teen during a fight after school.

Loved ones of victim Khaseen Morris were in court seeking justice for the warmhearted student who would have turned 17 last week, had he not been stabbed to death in September in an after-school brawl.

“My brother’s murderer, Tyler Flach, he sentenced our family to life without my brother,” said Khaseen’s sister Keyanna Morris.

Khaseen agreed to a pre-arranged meeting the day he was set upon in a dispute over a girl. Video of the melee led to the arrest of eight teens. Flach is the only one charged with murder.

His attorney says the video doesn’t tell the whole story.

“Tyler Flach strongly maintains his innocence and Tyler Flach did not commit a crime that day,” said attorney Edward Sapone.

A team of forensic analysts are reviewing additional cell phone videos and interviewing witnesses, says the defense, suggesting Tyler Flach was not the stabber.

“The video captures a snapshot of what occurred that day. It does not obviously capture what happened before and aftermath,” Sapone said. “The why is not captured on those videos.”

Flach entered a not guilty plea but otherwise said nothing in court, neatly dressed in a suit and button down shirt, which is a far cry from his look as a rapper. The aspiring rapper and community college student from Lido Beach is being held without bail in protected custody. His mother left court without comment.
