Jackson County prosecutors have charged a 48-year-old man for the death of a woman by stabbing and for wounding a man during an altercation at a gas station in the West Bottoms of Kansas City.

Panom R. Gai, who is listed as homeless, faces second-degree murder, assault and armed criminal action in the slaying. The female victim was identified through court records as Cynthia Thomas, 47.

The stabbing was reported about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at a Phillips 66 gas station in the 1500 block of West 12th Street near Wyoming Avenue.

Gai is accused of using a cane or a long stick that had a foot-long blade attached the end of it.

According to court records, police responded to the incident and the found victim dead from a stabbing wound and a man with life-threatening injuries. Both victims had been stabbed in the chest.

A witness told police they heard Gai argue with Thomas inside the gas station before stabbing her. The second victim tried to help but was stabbed, too. The incident was captured on surveillance video from the area.

The surviving victim identified the attacker as Gai. He was arrested Thursday afternoon in Friday near 12th and Genessee streets, within walking distance of the gas station.

Gai immigrated to the United States from the Sudan in 1995. Detectives interviewed Gai, who is not fluent in English, through a Sudanese interpreter.
