Worthless human fatally shoots 80-year-old bodega owner over 50 cents

Police outside the 797 Deli in Brooklyn Tuesday night. William C. Lopez

A heartless gunman shot an 80-year-old Brooklyn bodega owner in the chest Tuesday night — killing him over a mere 50 cents, police sources told The Post.

The gunman, who was still at large Wednesday, had taken a bottle of Corona from the fridge and thrown down $1.50 in payment.

“Hey, that’s $2!” shouted one of the four workers in the bodega — the 797 Deli on Stanley Avenue and Ashford Street in East New York — a law enforcement source told The Post.

“I’m going to come back,” the man threatened as he left with his beer. “And shoot you all.”

Sure enough, a short while later the man returned and opened fire, letting loose 12 bullets.

Only one struck its target, piercing the chest of bodega worker Abdulla Yafaee, 80.

The callous gunman fled, but was caught on video and recognized by surviving workers as someone who had been at the store before.

“He’s a good guy, a hard worker,” Taha Ubeid, 26, told The Post of Yafaee.

“People loved him so much,” said Ubeid, who worked as night clerk at the Ocean Avenue Candy store down the block from the victim’s apartment in Lefferts Gardens.

Cops question man suspected of gunning down bodega owner over 50 cents
By Larry Celona and Shawn Cohen

Life is cheap for this killer.

A Brooklyn bodega customer came up 50 cents short when he tried to buy a Corona — and he got so mad he couldn’t get a cut-rate beer that he opened fire, killing an elderly worker, police sources told The Post.

The fatal shot struck 80-year-old Abdulla Yafaee in the chest at 797 Deli on Stanley Avenue and Ashford Street in East New York around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, cops said.

On Wednesday night, cops grabbed a suspect and took him to the 75th Precinct for questioning.

Yafaee “was a hard-working man, working at 80 years old, and this savage comes in and shoots him for 50 cents,” said one law enforcement source.

“He was shooting wildly — like a madman,” the source added of the gunman.

“It’s lucky he didn’t kill anyone else.”

The gunman had asked for a Corona out of the bodega’s fridge around 2:30 p.m. that day, throwing down $1.50 in payment.

“Hey, that’s $2!” shouted a younger worker, law enforcement sources said.

“I’m going to come back,” the man threatened as he left without his beer.

“And shoot you all.”

Four hours later the man returned thirsty for revenge — and he fired off a fusillade of 12 bullets.

The only shot to hit a worker was the round that pierced Yafaee’s chest.

“He came back with gun blazing, and this old guy caught the bullet,” the second law enforcement source added.

“I’m amazed at the depravity,” he said.

Yafaee “didn’t even have anything to do with the original dispute,” the source said.

“And he wound up losing his life — because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The energetic octogenarian had been making ends meet by holding down a job at the East New York bodega and at a second bodega near his apartment five miles west, the Ocean Avenue Candy store in Lefferts Gardens.

“He’s a good guy, a hard worker,” Taha Ubeid, 28, told The Post of the Yemeni immigrant.

“People loved him so much,” said Ubeid, a night clerk at Ocean Avenue Candy.

The callous gunman fled after felling Yafaee.

But he was caught on clear surveillance video and was recognized by surviving workers as someone who had been at the store before, sources said.

“It’s crazy for 50 cents to shoot someone in the chest,” said Ubeid.

“It’s bad, man,” he added.

“We are told to respect old people. He is an old man who doesn’t even speak English. They hurt someone people loved.”

Yafaee’s customers at the Lefferts Gardens bodega were outraged.

“It makes me wonder if the shooter had mental health issues,” said Princess Francois, 28, of Brooklyn.

“Unfortunately, it is common,” she said of bodega violence. “Sad for the old man. ”

Said Mikey Nicks, 31, of Brooklyn, “I’m not startled. You know, like welcome to Brooklyn. Silver lining is the dead guy was 80 — he seemed to be liked so he will go to heaven.”

Nicks had a different prediction for the gunman.

“The shooter will go to hell,” he said, “where there is no Corona.”

Suspect allegedly called bodega owner ‘terrorist’ before murder

Mark Thomas
Paul Martinka

The Brooklyn man busted for fatally gunning down an elderly bodega owner who wouldn’t sell him a beer called the 80-year-old a “terrorist” before killing him, prosecutors said Friday.

Mark Thomas was held without bail on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon for shooting Abdulla Yafaee in the chest inside his East New York Deli Tuesday.

Prosecutor Wilfredo Cotto told the court the 41-year-old flipped out when Yafaee refused to sell him a Corona at a 50 cent discount — because he didn’t have the full $2 — prompting Thomas to scream “f–king Arabs, Muslims and terrorists,” before threatening to return with a firearm.

Thomas returned four hours later, police sources said, unleashing a hail of bullets on the quiet deli and killing the Yemeni immigrant.

If convicted on charges of second-degree murder, Thomas faces up to 25 years to life in prison.

He’s due back in court Dec. 20.

Cops arrest man suspected of gunning down bodega owner over 50 cents
By Larry Celona
December 14, 2017 | 10:13pm | Updated

The man suspected of gunning down an 80-year-old Brooklyn bodega worker — in a senseless dispute over 50 cents — is a career criminal who lived a block away from the shooting.

Mark Thomas, 41, of East New York, faces a maximum life sentence on charges he murdered the worker, Abdulla Yafaee, Tuesday night with a bullet to the chest.

Thomas had come up 50 cents short when he tried to pay for a $2 Corona beer at the 797 Deli on Stanley Avenue, police sources told The Post.

Denied his beer, he vowed revenge, swearing to the bodega workers, “I’m going to come back and shoot you all,” according to one source.

He allegedly returned four hours later, gun blazing. One bullet fatally struck Yafaee, a Yemeni immigrant.

Thomas has not made a confession, but his image was captured in clear surveillance-camera footage from the bodega, and he was fingered in at least one witness lineup, law enforcement sources said Thursday night.

He has some 20 prior arrests, including for robbery, drugs, forgery and criminal possession of knives, one source said.

Killer in bodega slay delays sentencing by denying past convictions
By Andrew Denney

A perp with a long rap sheet who was convicted of killing an 80-year-old bodega owner may have found a novel way to delay his inevitable sentencing — by denying that he was in fact the man who was convicted of a raft of past crimes, including robbery.

Mark Thomas, 42, was set to learn his fate on Monday, but decided to hold things up by taking the unusual step of denying that he is the man who was convicted of three of his prior felonies.

The denial came as Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Ruth Shilllingford asked Thomas if he is indeed the man who was convicted of his past offenses — a routine step at sentencings for defendants who were convicted of past felonies.

“Your client said he is not the person who was convicted,” Shillingford said to defense attorney David Walensky, who told The Post following the sentencing that, in his 35 years of practicing law, Thomas’ case was only the second time he’d seen a defendant pull a stunt like this.

The judge kept her cool and postponed sentencing for Oct. 9, which will give Assistant District Attorney Jamie Begley time to track down transcripts and certificates of conviction for Thomas’ old cases — and add an extra month to Thomas’ stay on Rikers Island.

Walensky said not owning up to past felonies at sentencing hearings “doesn’t really benefit” defendants if there’s no reason to deny them.“Either they don’t understand or they just want to be a pain in the butt,” Walensky said.

Thomas was convicted last month of manslaughter, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, but managed to beat a second-degree murder charge, for the 2017 killing of Abdulla Yafaee in his East New York bodega. Thomas faces 25 years to life in prison.

The shooting was something of a capstone for a long criminal career for Thomas that goes back decades and includes some 20 priors, including robbery and illegal weapons possession.
