Neighbor Smelled Gas, Fire at Home Police Searched in Case of Missing Utah Student
Updated at 04:40AM, June 28, 2019

A neighbor near the house that was searched in connection with the disappearance of University of Utah student said she smelled gasoline and something burning there.

Teresa Draheim said her neighbor, whose home police searched Wednesday, lit a fire in his yard recently. And she said she smelled gasoline.

Authorities have spoken with the owner of the residence in the Fairpark neighborhood, Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown told reporters Thursday. Brown did not identify the homeowner, who is not in police custody.

Salt Lake man to be charged with murdering missing Utah student Mackenzie Lueck
UPDATED - Jun 28th, 2019 @ 11:46am

SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a Salt Lake man Friday who they say murdered University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck, who has been missing since June 17.

"It is with heavy heart that I address you today," said Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown.

Ayoola Adisa Ajayi, 31, was arrested at 9:20 a.m. at an apartment complex at 1028 S. West Temple. He is expected to be charged with aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping and desecration of a body, according to Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown.

Ajayi was seen walking outside the apartment complex walking toward a police SWAT team with his hands over his head. Officers then put him into handcuffs.

A second man was also taken into custody at the complex.

On Thursday, Salt Lake police called Ajayi, the owner of the house in the Fairpark neighborhood, a "person of interest" in Lueck's disappearance.

Police spent an active Wednesday evening and through the night collecting evidence from that house. Bags and bags of evidence were collected. Officers could be seen digging holes in the backyard.

His neighbors told detectives they had observed Ajayi on June 17 and 18 burning something in his backyard. Police recovered several charred items, including body parts and personal items belonging to Lueck.

Contractor says man arrested on suspicion of killing U. student asked him to build soundproof room
Posted - Jun 28th, 2019 @ 9:09pm

SALT LAKE CITY — A Weber County private contractor was shocked Thursday when he saw Ayoola Ajayi’s home on the news in connection with missing 23-year-old Mackenzie Lueck.

“My heart just dropped,” said Brian Wolf, contractor. “I'm like, 'No way.’”

Wolf says Ajayi reached out to him a few months ago and asked him about building a soundproof room in his basement.

Ajayi was arrested Friday in connection with Lueck’s death.

It was back in April when Wolf met Ajayi, who he knew as AJ, after he contacted Wolf about fixing drywall. A plumber had given Wolf’s contact information to Ajayi after the home had supposedly experienced flooding issues.

When Wolf arrived at the house, 547 N. 1000 West, he told Ajayi he didn’t think it needed any work. That’s when things took a turn for the unusual.

“He asked me to build a weird room and I told him no,” Wolf explained.

Wolf said Ajayi asked him about building a secret, soundproof room in the basement, in a space underneath the porch. He said Ajayi wanted the room to have a thumbprint lock, so only he could access it, and he wanted large hooks placed in the walls at about head height.

“He said he wanted to sit in there and listen to his music as loud as he wanted to. I thought it was kind of weird to sit in a little room to listen to music real loud,” Wolf said. “It wasn't a big area. It was just weird.”

Ajayi told Wolf he needed the hooks for a hidden liquor cabinet but Wolf recalled telling Ajayi “there’s a much nicer way” than adding four big hooks anchored in concrete.

“I can make it look nice if you want a liquor cabinet that's hidden from whatever,” Wolf recalled telling Ajayi.

Ajayi also told Wolf he needed it done this way because his “Mormon girlfriend was coming into town and he drank alcohol and he wanted to hide his alcohol.”

“That was another reason I was like, 'That's kind of weird that you need a soundproof room to listen to music and drink your alcohol in,’” Wolf said.

When he saw the same house on the news, Wolf called the police and told them about the encounter.

Ayoola Ajayi, accused of killing MacKenzie Lueck, was once investigated for rape. And his ex-wife feared him.

The man accused of killing University of Utah student MacKenzie Lueck was investigated several years ago for allegedly raping a coworker. And Ayoola Ajayi’s ex-wife spoke out Monday, saying she feared him.

Ajayi, 31, has been in the Salt Lake County jail since last Friday, accused of kidnapping and murdering Lueck on June 17 before burning her body. Ajayi has not yet been formally charged in Lueck’s death, and he remains in the jail without the opportunity to post bail.

A North Park police report released to The Salt Lake Tribune on Monday provides more details about an incident from 2014 when officers investigated a rape complaint.

According to that report, a woman who worked with him at a financial company in Logan reported to police on Nov. 24, 2014 that Ajayi had non-consensual sex with her while they were at his home. She told police immediately that she did not want charges filed, the report reads, only wanting the incident reported “in case he did the same thing to someone else.”

The woman explained to police who had met her at Cache Valley Hospital that she went over to his home, and they began “doing stuff,” that “one thing led to another” and “she found herself in a compromising position.”

She told him she did not want to continue, she reported to police, but that he had sex with her anyway.

"She kept saying to me that she felt that it was her fault, because she was not assertive enough," an officer wrote in the report. "I explained that all she needed to do was to say no, and that should be enough."

The case gained little traction, however, after the woman didn’t want to go to the police station for a follow-up interview and didn’t want to cooperate with the investigation. Ajayi was never interviewed by officers.

The 31-year-old man has no criminal history in Utah apart from some traffic violations.

Ajayi’s ex-wife, Tenisha Ajayi, told KUTV for a story that aired Monday that she hasn’t spoken to her estranged husband in years. Though she was shocked by the most recent accusations, she said there were also signs of violence in their relationship.

Suspect assaulted Utah student Mackenzie Lueck, then burned her body, charges say
Published: July 10, 2019 10:45 am

SALT LAKE CITY — Mackenzie Lueck was killed by blunt force trauma to her head, being hit with such force that she died from internal bleeding, according to charging documents.

On Wednesday, disturbing new details about the violent death the 23-year-old University of Utah student suffered were revealed in court documents that formally charge Ayoola Adisa Ajayi with aggravated murder, a capital offense.

Ajayi, 31, of Salt Lake City, was also charged with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony, desecration of a human body, a second-degree felony, and obstruction of justice, a third-degree felony.

After she was killed, prosecutors say Ajayi poured gasoline on her body and burned it. Her charred remains were found by police in a shallow grave under a grove of trees in Logan Canyon on July 3.

"Mackenzie's arms were bound behind her back by a zip tie and rope. A 5-centimeter hole was located on the left side of her skull with part of her left scalp missing," according to charging documents filed in 3rd District Court.

An autopsy conducted by the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office determined Lueck died from blunt force trauma to the left side of her skull, "resulting in significant intracranial hemorrhaging which would have been fatal," the charges state.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill declined to say Wednesday if or what kind of weapon Ajayi might have used to cause a 5-centimeter hole.

Ayoola Ajayi, accused of killing MacKenzie Lueck, faces new child porn charges

8/13/19

The man accused of murdering a 23-year-old University of Utah student was charged Tuesday with 19 unrelated counts of sexual exploitation of a minor after police examined his computer and found pornographic images of children.

Police seized 31-year-old Ayoola Ajayi’s computer June 26 during an investigation into the death of MacKenzie Lueck. On July 2, a forensic lab began analyzing its contents and found multiple images of children engaged in sex acts, according to charging documents, filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court.

The charges describe 19 photos in graphic detail and five times mentions children posing on a “floral mattress."
