Police: Man wearing 'Make America Great Again' hat, shirt assaults man on Manhattan subway

4/22/18

UNION SQUARE, Manhattan (WABC) --
Police are on the lookout for a man wearing a 'Make America Great Again' hat and blue overalls for an assault at a Manhattan subway station.

The suspect got in a verbal dispute with another man while onboard a northbound 4 train approaching the Union Square/14th Street stop, officials say. The man reportedly made multiple derogatory statements about the victim's ethnicity.

The suspect then reportedly followed the victim when he got off the train at 14th Street and punched him on the head. He then proceeded to push the victim to the track bed before fleeing to the Brooklyn-bound L train platform.

The victims suffered a laceration to his head. He was taken to an area hospital.

Police describe the suspect as a black man with a heavy build, wearing a 'Make America Great Again' hat, a red shirt with 'Make America Great Again' in white letters, blue overalls, a black jacket and jewelry around his neck.

April 22, 2018 | 2:21am

An apparent supporter of President Trump got into an argument with a man on a subway train and later pushed him onto the tracks, police said Saturday.

The 24-year-old victim had been accosted by his assailant, who was wearing a “Make America Great Again’’ hat, on a No.4 train on Friday.

Police said the attacker, who is African-American, spewed anti-Hispanic slurs at the victim. They both got off at Union Square, where the victim was shoved off the platform.

A friend helped him back up, and he was treated for a head laceration.

The attacker was described as having a heavy build and was wearing blue dungarees, a red shirt and a black jacket.

He fled to a different part of the station and boarded an L train.

Subway shover in ‘MAGA’ hat spouted anti-Mexican slurs

The subway shover who donned a red “Make America Great Again” shirt and hat when he pushed a Hispanic man onto the Manhattan subway tracks last week spewed racial slurs at his victim and mimicked campaign statements made by President Trump, authorities said Sunday.

“You f—ing Mexicans ,” the suspect shouted at his 24-year-old victim, cops said.

The strangers were aboard a northbound No. 4 train Friday around 8:15 p.m. when the altercation started.

“You come here and you take our jobs,” the attacker continued. “You bring drugs.”

Both men got off the train at Union Square/14th Street subway station, and the unhinged man then punched his victim several times in the head and pushed him onto the train tracks.

The victim was pulled to safety by a friend and a passer-by. He was transported to an area hospital for a cut on his head.

The suspect is shown in surveillance footage from the train station. The incident is being investigated by the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force.

In a 2015 speech announcing his bid for the presidency, Trump said: “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best…They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”

Cop have busted the “Make America Great Again” hat-wearing thug who allegedly shoved a Hispanic man onto the subway tracks at Union Square, police sources said.

Willie Ames was nabbed on Staten Island early Thursday, and is now awaiting charges at the 7th Precinct stationhouse on the Lower East Side, sources said.

Ames — who has several priors in New York, including for assault and drug possession — was wearing a red hat and shirt bearing President Trump’s campaign slogan when he and another straphanger got into an argument aboard a northbound 4 train around 8:15 p.m. April 20.

“You f–king Mexicans ,” Ames, 47, allegedly shouted at the 24-year-old victim. “You come here and you take our jobs. You bring drugs.”

Both men got off the train at Union Square, where the bigot punched the victim several times in the head before shoving him onto the tracks and running off, cops said.

The victim was pulled to safety by a friend and a good Samaritan, and treated for a cut on the head.

Suspected subway shover in ‘MAGA’ hat blames victim

The brute who was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat when he allegedly shoved a 24-year-old Hispanic man onto Manhattan subway tracks says the victim is to blame.

Willie Ames, a 47-year-old convicted murderer, “does maintain he is not the instigator of this incident,” said the suspect’s lawyer, public defender Eliza Orlins, at her client’s arraignment Friday.

Ames was arraigned on charges including attempted assault in the first, second and third degree as a hate crime in the subway push. Ames has been on parole since 2013 for a robbery charge and has a prior murder conviction in Virginia, the DA’s office said.

According to the criminal complaint, two friends of Mexican descent were riding an uptown No. 4 train Monday night when Ames sat next to them and yelled, “You guys come here to take our jobs, and you bring drugs! F—ing Mexicans, you people are dirty, you people are nasty!”

When the train pulled into Manhattan’s Union Square station, Ames allegedly grabbed one of the men by his clothing, pulled him off the train and punched him three times in his face. Ames then pushed the man onto the train track, according to the victim, who needed staples in his scalp.

“The victim could have easily been killed, ” Assistant District Attorney Christopher Rivet said. “They were a target because of their Mexican origin.”

Rivet requested that no bail be set, stating that Ames “took steps to abscond from police, including disabling his phone” and that these are “extremely serious and vicious charges.”

Orlins asked for a more reasonable bail, saying that Ames’ parole is set to expire in June and that “he’s had no problems on parole” and has had a “lack of criminal history since 2011.

“He’s done very well for the last five years,” Orlins said.

Ames will next appear in court May 2.

MAGA hat-wearing thug convicted of pushing Hispanic man onto subway tracks
By Rebecca Rosenberg
June 27, 2019 | 6:43pm

A MAGA hat-wearing thug was found guilty Thursday of punching and shoving a Hispanic man onto the subway tracks at Union Square after making derogatory comments about Mexicans.

“This defendant’s crime was more than a violation of our laws — it was a violation of our New York values,” said District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. in a statement.

“As a jury has now determined, Willie Ames targeted two New Yorkers on the basis of their heritage in a vicious assault fueled by hatred and prejudice. Now, he will be held accountable for this unprovoked and potentially deadly hate crime assault.”

William Ames, 49, was acquitted of first-degree attempted assault as a hate crime.

On April 20, 2018, Ames accosted two men commuting home from work on a northbound 4 train, ranting at them about Mexican-Americans.

When the train stopped at the Union Square station a few minutes later, Ames dragged Alan Lopez off the train by his clothing, struck him three times on the station platform.

He then struck his pal, Luis Lopez, and pushed him onto the tracks then fled.

A witness to the incident helped Alan Lopez, 26, pull Luis Lopez, 24, onto the platform while another eyewitness called 911.

Defense lawyer Glenn Hardy said his client is not a Trump supporter and wore the hat as a joke.

Hardy argued that the two victims, offended by the ubiquitous red cap, picked a fight with Ames, who simply defended himself.

“This was an unfortunate situation that did not rise to the level of a hate crime,” Hardy said. “Mr. Ames has full faith in the justice system and will be appealing the matter.”

Ames is scheduled to be sentenced July 12.
