Jailed Fort Worth couple's emaciated poodle was too weak to stand

A Fort Worth pair was arrested Sunday after they surrendered an emaciated 6-year-old pool who was too weak to stand on his own, police said.

Ceaira La Faye Dorn, 25, and James Calvin Turner, 48, were each charged with cruelty to a non-livestock animal.

A Fort Worth Animal Shelter worker notified police April 12 when a couple matching a description of Dorn and Turner had surrendered a gray poodle named Rieki, who was soaked in urine and feces and too weak to stand on his own.

Dorn told him that the reason Rieki could not stand up was that he had been hit by a car, and that she was surrendering him because she could not afford medical care for him, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit.

The next day, Dorn told an animal control officer that she had taken Rieki to several vet appointments immediately after he was hit by a car.

The officer said he found records for Rieki at only one vet office: Eastern Hills Pet Hospital. There, an employee recalled that Dorn and Turner had brought Rieki in for an appointment, but refused to pay for his treatment and left without paying for the visit.

Rieki was passed on to Dallas DogRRR, which ha spent over $1600 in medical costs to treat him, according to the affidavit.
