Suspect Arrested in Rash of Subway Brake Pullings That Disrupted Thousands
Thousands of riders have already been delayed by the culprit or culprits who sneak off sometime after bringing trains to a halt, surfing on the back of the cars and getting away via tunnels

A 23-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning, suspected of being the serial subway brake puller.

Isaiah Thompson
was arrested at home just before 12:30 a.m. Friday after an outside tip.

He faces charges of reckless endangerment and criminal trespass after a rash of incidents dating back months that has disrupted thousands of commuters.

Police believe that on at least three occasions this month alone, Thompson rode the back of various subway trains in Manhattan, got into the operator's car and pulled the emergency brake.

They believe the suspect could potentially be tied to at least 40 brake-related incidents on trains since March. They are also pursuing the possibility that some of the incidents could be the suspect's accomplices, or even copycats.

The MTA first acknowledged Wednesday that someone has been making a habit of pulling the emergency brakes on subways at the worst possible time: the height of rush hour.

Thousands of riders have already been delayed by the culprit or culprits, who sneak off sometime after bringing trains to a halt, surfing on the back of the cars and getting away via tunnels.

The MTA says whoever is intentionally ruining riders commutes may have been at it for a while now. Complaints from riders on Twitter about a pulled emergency brake go back months.

“It’s stupid. It’s stupid and selfish, and we intend to nail them,” said New York City Transit President Andy Byford.

The emergency brakes being activated are not the ones that all commuters have access to. The wrongdoer is breaking into the operator’s car with keys and pulling that brake, the MTA said. The transit authority has not shared how they believe the offender may have gotten the keys.

The MTA kept initial reports of the brake-pulling scheme quiet so as to avoid copycats.

Subway 'Brake Bandit' Arrested For Allegedly Pulling Emergency Brakes, Exposing Himself

Police have arrested the man they believe "intentionally disrupted thousands of commutes" by pulling the subway emergency brake on hundreds of trains over the past few months—and police say he also exposed himself to passengers as well.

Brooklyn resident Isaiah Thompson, 23, was arrested last night and charged with reckless endangerment and criminal trespass for allegedly pulling a subway brake on a northbound 2 train near 14th Street in Manhattan on Tuesday. A police source tells the Post Thompson may have pulled the emergency brake on upwards of 40 trains, resulting in delays on over 700 trains.

Accused serial subway saboteur likes to ‘inconvenience people’: sources

The alleged serial subway staller possibly responsible for delaying some 750 delays by pulling trains’ emergency brakes told cops he loves to cause chaos and ruin New Yorkers’ commutes, law enforcement sources said Friday.

“I like to create mayhem,” alleged brake-yanker Isaiah Thompson told cops, sources told The Post. “I like to inconvenience people.”

Thompson, 23, was busted late Thursday near his Brooklyn home, and initially hit with charges including two counts each of reckless endangerment and criminal trespass — but cops are looking to link him to shutting down 40 trains.

“One of the motives that we’ve seen is that he likes to do this — he likes to cause havoc,” said NYPD Inspector Brian McGee in a Friday press briefing,

McGee emphasized that Thompson is no stranger to transit cops — he has 16 prior transit-related arrests, seven of which are reckless endangerment raps for subway surfing.

“He has mentioned in the past that he enjoys this, he enjoys the thrill,” said McGee.

The serial subway saboteur broke into the locked control cabs of trains to trigger the e-brakes — but Thompson insists he doesn’t have a key.

“He’s saying he doesn’t have a key, and the MTA is saying that door [to the cab] was locked,” said McGee.

Thompson, who kept quiet as he was walked from two separate NYPD station houses early Friday, is awaiting arraignment at Manhattan criminal court.

Suspected subway saboteur has history of transit crimes: cops

The transit troublemaker with a penchant for pulling emergency brakes has terrorized the rails before — as a serial subway surfer with a laundry list of arrests.

Isaiah Thompson, 23, was busted last July for hanging onto the outside of a C train in Brooklyn as it zipped between stations — a daredevil stunt that was caught on video, cops confirmed Friday.

The video by straphanger Matthew Beary shows Thompson casually catching a ride on the train as it speeds between two stops. At one point, the thrillseeker holds on with just one hand and stuffs the other in his pocket as the train hurtles through a tunnel. He jumps off when the train enters the Lafayette Avenue station.

It was at least the fourth time Thompson was caught subway surfing, cops said at the time. In November 2017, he was nabbed for allegedly riding outside a Brooklyn J train, not far from his Bedford-Stuyvesant home.

Thompson has long been a nuisance in the subways, with at least 17 arrests dating back to 2017, all in the transit system, police said.

Two of them were assaults, including one as recently as November, authorities said. Thompson allegedly grabbed a woman on the platform of the Halsey Street J train station, put his hands on her and tried to “throw” her, the victim told police. She was not seriously injured.

And in August, cops say, he got into a fight with a man and slashed him in the bicep area with a knife on the stairs leading to the mezzanine at Jay Street-MetroTech.

Thompson was arrested in February for jumping on the back of the last train car on a southbound train at Jay Street and hopping a turnstile at the Clinton-Washington station, police said.

And in August, November and December, he was nabbed for allegedly selling unauthorized MetroCard swipes.

Thompson was arrested just before midnight Thursday for allegedly pulling the emergency brake on a northbound 2 train near 14th Street in Manhattan on Tuesday.

Cops worked off a tip to identify the subway saboteur — who was also charged for a May 16 incident in which he rode on the back of a subway car and exposed himself, authorities said.

He is facing reckless endangerment, criminal trespass and public lewdness charges, cops said.

Thompson was being held by cops early Friday.
