An Iowa City man, who sexually abused a woman while committing an armed robbery in 2017 was sentenced Friday to up to 75 years in prison and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Sullivan Pierre Smith-Berry, 26,
was sentenced on three counts of first-degree robbery, one count of second-degree sex abuse and one count of first-degree burglary.

"The case was absolutely terrifying for the victims," said Johnson County Attorney Janet Lyness. "They didn't even feel safe to come back to Iowa City for his sentencing."

He is required to serve a minimum of 35 years in prison and once eligible for parole, he'll be required to report to a parole officer for the rest of his life.

According to police complaints, a second man, Earl Lee Riley Jr., 30, was allegedly part of the Nov. 3, 2017 incident. He is awaiting trial and his next hearing is scheduled for June 21. He faces the same charges.

On the night of the crime, Smith-Berry kicked open a locked apartment door at around 11:30 p.m. armed with an "AR-style rifle and wearing a partial mask."

Inside the apartment were two men and one woman. Smith-Berry struck the two men to the ground with the rifle and demanded money.

Police say he then gave the rifle to Riley to keep the two men on the floor while he took the woman to a separate room. Smith-Berry committed sex acts against her will before he left with cash and a PlayStation 4.

Riley allegedly held the rifle to keep the men on the ground and left with Smith-Berry and the stolen property.
