Hilton Head Island shooting suspect found dead in apartment

Updated March 22 at 6:16 PM

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WTOC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred at the Point Comfort Club at Palmetto Bay Road on Hilton Head Island, Thursday morning.

Investigators say a woman was shot around 10:10 a.m. by an unknown Hispanic man. It happened outside of a home, according to witnesses. Deputies and fire officials responded to the scene. They say the man got away in a silver Mercedes Benz before they got there. The victim, 44-year-old, Karma Young, was flown by helicopter to Memorial in Savannah, where she later died.

At the scene, investigators found a cartridge casing on the ground near where the victim was found. Early on, witnesses provided deputies with a lead on a possible person of interest. It was learned that the victim had recently complained that a Hispanic man, with whom she was acquainted, had harassed her. Looking into it further, investigators found disturbing text messages from an unknown man on the woman’s phone. They say one message was as recent as Wednesday.

Shortly after 11 a.m., while officers were still on the scene of the Point Comfort Club investigation, Jasper County deputies were called to respond to a death scene at Brook Mill Apartments. When they got there, they found a deceased Hispanic man, identified as 41-year-old Jose Guzman-Rosario, inside the apartment. Officers say the wound was self-inflicted. They found the same caliber handgun they believe was used to shoot the female victim. His clothing matched the description of the clothing worn by the Hispanic man in the Point Comfort Club shooting.

Deputies also found a silver Mercedes parked at Brook Mill Apartments, registered to Guzman-Rosario. A cell phone found in his apartment was confirmed to be the one used to text the woman on Wednesday.
