Man attempted to rape woman in Harlem building stairwell: cops
By Craig McCarthy
February 24, 2019 | 9:37am

A man followed a 40-year-old woman into her Harlem apartment building and tried to rape her in the stairwell, police said Sunday.

The woman managed to fight off the unidentified man, and the two tumbled down the stairs.

The man took off on foot after the scuffle that happened just before 6 a.m. Saturday near 148th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

Authorities released a photo of a suspect, who was last seen wearing a striped red, white and black puffy jacket and a hooded sweatshirt and may have scratches on his face.

The woman was treated at Harlem Hospital for injuries on her back and hand. Her identity wasn’t released.

Harlem woman fights off teen who tried to rape her: cops
By Stephanie Pagones, Cedar Attanasio and Aaron Feis

A Harlem woman courageously fought off a would-be rapist who police say may be responsible for an earlier sex attack in the same area — which cops dragged their feet investing, police sources said Sunday.

In the most recent assault, the suspect — described as a 16-year-old male — tailed the victim home from the West 145th Street subway station on the 1 line at around 6 a.m. Saturday, then grabbed her and tried to undress her on the steps of her apartment building off Broadway, cops and sources said.

“I was sleeping and I actually woke up” because of the commotion, which included a “female voice, like high-pitched,” said an area resident, Anna Hooper, 23. “It was distressing.”

The 40-year-old victim fought off her attacker, who was clad in a red-and-white puffy jacket. The suspect was arrested Sunday and charged with rape and sexually motivated assault and burglary, but his name was not released on account of his age.

The bust came hours after detectives canvassed for surveillance footage from area stores, including a C-Town near West 148th Street, where the manager was expecting police — because other cops had been in about a week earlier looking for video of a suspect in another rape, a police source said.

The earlier video, like clips released by cops in Saturday’s attempt (above), appears to show the same attacker wearing a red-and-white jacket.

Cops asked the manager for the video of the earlier case, but failed to go back and pick it up, the police sources said.

An NYPD spokesman said the department is “actively investigating whether the incident from [Saturday] . . . is connected to any other.”

Teen who attempted to rape woman has open cases for forcible touching
By Rebecca Rosenberg
February 25, 2019 | 7:13pm

A teen sex fiend who police say tried to rape a Harlem woman last week already had two open cases for forcible touching, prosecutors said

Sanjay Jaggernauth, 16, was arraigned Monday in Manhattan Supreme Court for the attack on a 40-year-old stranger last Saturday.

He allegedly followed the woman to her apartment from the West 145th Street subway station at about 6 a.m.

She heard Jaggernauth’s steps behind her and tried to pick up her pace — but the teen followed her into her building and up a flight of stairs.

“The defendant grabbed at the woman’s jacket with his hands, which the woman had zipped up, trying to pull it off,” according to the criminal complaint.

Assistant District Attorney Megan McDonald said that during the tussle Jaggernauth pushed her against a wall then down an entire flight of stairs.

Surveillance video shows Jaggernauth and the woman stumbling down the stairs, she said.

McDonald added that the defendant has two open forcible touching cases currently pending in family court.

The DA’s office hit the teen creep with 20 counts of burglary, attempted rape, assault and other charges and plans to present the case to a grand jury for indictment.

But first they have to persuade a judge at an upcoming hearing not to send the attempted rape case to family court, where he would be treated as a minor.

Defense lawyer Donna Henken said that Jaggernauth is a full-time student who lives with his father.

Police say that Jaggernauth may have been responsible for an earlier sex attack in the same area — but sources say that cops dragged their feet investigating.

Judge refuses to raise bail for teen who cops say assaulted 2 women
By Rebecca Rosenberg
March 6, 2019 | 8:26pm

This teen now has at least two attempted sex abuse arrests under his belt — but a Manhattan judge still won’t raise his bail.

Sanjay Jaggernauth, 16, was arraigned in Manhattan Supreme Court Wednesday for a Feb. 9 attack just after 2 a.m., where he followed the woman from the subway station into her building on W. 152nd St.

“The defendant approached her, grabbed her arm with one hand, and grabbed her breast with his other hand and squeezed,” the complaint states. He then fled.

The baby-faced predator had already been charged with a similar attack that happened two weeks later, on Feb. 23, during which he followed a 40-year-old woman from the subway station to her W. 148th St. apartment at about 6 a.m.

He tried to yank off her coat, and during the ensuing struggle, pushed her against a wall then threw her down the stairs, court records allege.

He was released on $10,000 bail in that case.

Prosecutor Hannah Yu on Wednesday urged Judge Gayle Roberts to raise his bail to $150,000, calling him an extraordinary flight risk, but she declined. The jurist did impose a curfew.

Jaggernauth walked out of court free again.

Yu said that Jaggernauth has two cases pending in Family Court, including one for misdemeanor forcible touching and another for first-degree sex abuse involving several victims.

He is due back in court March 11 on the Feb. 9 case for a hearing to determine whether he’ll benefit from the new “Raise the Age” law that could see his case transferred to Family Court, where he’ll be tried as a minor.

Another teen, Edgar Garcia, 16, is free on $10,000 bail following an arrest for a caught-on-camera shooting in the Bronx. In the footage, a little girl in pink tights is seen scrambling for cover as shots fly by her.

Garcia could also possibly benefit from the new “raise the age” legislation signed by Gov. Cuomo in 2017 to end the automatic prosecution as adults of 16- and 17-year-olds.
