Cops say 5 dead after shooting at Illinois manufacturing plant

February 15, 2019 | 4:01pm | Updated February 15, 2019 | 7:00pm

A man recently fired from an Illinois manufacturing facility opened fire on his former co-workers Friday — slaying five people and wounding several more before he was killed at the scene.

The incident was reported at around 1:30 p.m. local time at the Henry Pratt Co. in Aurora, officials said.

The incident ended around 3 p.m., with the shooter, Gary Martin, 45, dead at the scene.

A city official told CNN that the four officers who were shot are in stable condition.

The shooter’s sister, Tameka Martin, said her brother was let go from the company two weeks ago after working there for 20 years.

Henry Pratt employee John Probst said the shooter was armed with a pistol with a laser scope.

“One of the guys was up in the office, he said this person was shooting, and, he come running down and he was bleeding pretty bad, and the next thing you know he was walking back and forth, I heard more shots, and we just left the building,” Probst told ABC7.

Probst said that he and another co-worker escaped the building through a back door.

The conditions of the civilians injured were not immediately clear. Multiple victims were airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital.

The Aurora Police Department tweeted: “Active Shooter Incident has been secured. Shooter is no longer a threat to the area. Continued police presence will remain as investigation continues. Parents please contact your local school districts for dismissal plan.”

President Trump said has been briefed on the shooting at the Henry Pratt Co. and is monitoring the situation, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

The Henry Pratt Co. produces industrial equipment and has been in business for more than a century.

West Aurora School District 129 said in a statement that the district went into a soft lockdown as a result of the shooting.

“My heart breaks for Aurora. I’m tracking updates on the situation with my staff. Thank you to the members of law enforcement who are responding to the emergency,” Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin said in a tweet.

Aurora is roughly 40 miles west of Chicago.

The gunman who killed five people and wounded five police officers in an Illinois factory was a longtime employee there who was being fired on Friday, authorities said.

Gary Martin, 45, a 15-year employee of the Henry Pratt Co. warehouse in Aurora, pulled a gun in the compound at about 1:25 p.m. and started shooting, Police Chief Kristen Ziman said at a press conference.

Martin killed five of his colleagues at the factory and wounded five police officers before cops shot and killed him.

He was armed with a handgun, Ziman said at the news conference, but it was not immediately clear if he had it on him while he was being fired, or if he went to retrieve it and came back.

Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin called Friday “a sad day in the city of Aurora.”

“It’s a shame that mass shootings such as this have become commonplace in our country,” Irvin said, adding “We will come together and heal as one Aurora.”

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said: “There are no words for the kinds of evil that robs our neighbors of their hopes and their dreams and their futures.
