Angry Facebook removes Proud Boys after Manhattan brawl

Republican club on Upper East Side vandalized
By Katherine Lavacca, Larry Celona and Ben Feuerherd
October 12, 2018 | 2:44pm | Updated October 12, 2018 | 4:52pm

An Upper East Side Republican club was vandalized overnight — with a brick thrown through its window, two anarchy symbols scrawled on its front door and the locks glued, authorities said Friday.

The attack at the Metropolitan Republican Club on East 83rd Street near Lexington Avenue appeared to be at least partly tied to the scheduled appearance of right-wing provocateur Gavin McInnes at the club Friday night.

McInnes, a co-founder of Vice Media, heads a right-wing group called the Proud Boys, which has been characterized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

A note found at the club after the vandalism attack read in part, “The Metropolitan Republican Club chose to invite a hipster-fascist clown to dance for them, content to revel in their treachery against humanity.”

But the note also ripped the party in general.

“Tonight, we put the Republican Party on notice, in defiance to the policy of mass misery they have championed,” it read. “The US government has established concentration camps around the country for Latino people, shamelessly murders black people, and continues its war machine that has slaughtered Muslim people with impunity for decades.”

At a press conference in front of the club Friday afternoon, New York GOP leaders fumed about the vandalism.

“This is terrorism,” said state Senate candidate Pete Holmberg. “The people in this district are civil. These people came from outside.

“This is an outside threat, and they’ve been sort of validated by [Hillary] Clinton,” Holmberg added, three days after the Democratic former presidential candidate said her party needs to put “civility” on the back burner until it wrests control of Congress from the GOP.

Marc Molinaro, the GOP candidate for governor of New York, said in a statement, “This type of political violence and rank vandalism is unacceptable, and I call on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to condemn this attack immediately and call for calm on the political left.”

Cops discovered the vandalism while responding to a call of a burglary at the address at 1:50 a.m.

Three cowardly leftist faggots busted in brawl outside event for 'Proud Boys' leader Gavin McInnes
By Amanda Woods

Three men protesting the appearance of right-wing provocateur Gavin McInnes at an Upper East Side Republican club were busted in a brawl Friday evening, cops said.

About 80 protesters gathered outside the Metropolitan Republican Club at Third Avenue and East 83th Street, where McInnes was speaking, police said. McInnes, a co-founder of Vice Media, heads a right-wing group called the Proud Boys, which has been characterized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

As the audience left around 8:15 p.m., cops say three protesters began following a man leaving the building.

As he ran, he dropped his backpack, and when he tried to pick it up, a protester punched him and took his property, according to police.

Someone called the cops, and the trio — Finbarr Slonim, 20, and Caleb Perkins, 35, both of the Upper East Side, and Kai Russo, 20, from Bushwick — were arrested about 25 minutes later, cops said.

All three were charged with robbery and assault. Perkins was hit with an additional resisting arrest charge.

There were no other arrests, according to police.

Some social media users claim the Proud Boys were the aggressors.

“We followed Proud Boys after Gavin McInnes Republican Club event,” wrote Sandi Bachom, who posted a YouTube video of a sidewalk brawl. “Police escort walked them down Park Ave, then a small group turned down 82nd Street. Someone tried to take one of their MAGA hats and this happened,” Bachom lied in reference to the assault.

Photojournalist Shay Horse tweeted about a fight involving “30 (proud boys) V 3 (randoms).”

“It ended with 30 proud boys pummeling a guy on the ground screaming, ‘ARE YOU BRAVE NOW F—-T?!’” he posted.

Vandals threw a brick through the window of the same Republican club early Friday, scrawled two anarchy symbols on its front door and glued the locks, cops said.

The vandalism appeared to be at least partly tied to McInnes’ appearance.

Police Commissioner O’Neil on Saturday said that video recordings of the brawls are being reviewed to determine if more arrests are warranted.

He urged anyone else with information or video to call 1-800-577-TIPS.

NYPD to arrest 9 members of far-right Proud Boys involved in brawl
By Tina Moore and Ben Feuerherd
October 15, 2018 | 4:11pm | Updated October 15, 2018 | 4:27pm

The NYPD said Monday that it plans to arrest nine members of the alt-right group the Proud Boys and three more anti-fascist opponents involved in a brawl on the Upper East Side on Friday — as new video of the melee surfaced.

“We believe we have valid [reason for the] arrests for those nine individuals to include charges of riot and attempted assault ,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said at a press conference, adding that the raps could be upgraded.

Immediately after the fight, the NYPD arrested three protesters who punched a member of the conservative group and stole a backpack.

The NYPD was quickly criticized for not arresting any members of the alt-right group, which has been branded a hate group.

Shea said Monday that three more protesters were to be arrested for the brawl, too.

Meanwhile, police Monday released new video from the fight Friday night on East 82nd Street after Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnis gave a speech at the Metropolitan Republican Club. The video shows one of the protesters tossing something at Proud Boys members, who then whale on them, kicking and punching them and calling them “f—-ts.”

The club on East 83rd Street was vandalized in the hours leading up to the speech and brawl.

“We will not tolerate any violence on the streets of New York City, and anyone, from any group, who participates in violence will be vigorously investigated,” Shea said.

These are the suspects wanted for vandalizing an Upper East Side Republican club
By Ben Feuerherd

October 15, 2018 | 2:34pm | Updated October 15, 2018 | 2:42pm

The NYPD on Monday released images of the vandals who broke windows at and scrawled anarchist symbols on an Upper East Side Republican club hours before a controversial speaker spoke there.

The images, released by the NYPD’s 19th Precinct on Twitter, show the two suspects wearing dark hooded sweatshirts and jeans.

One of the suspects had a beard and was carrying a clear plastic bag during the vandalism, according to the image.

The other suspect’s face was covered by the hood of his sweatshirt. He was carrying what appears to be a brick in a yellow plastic bag.

The two suspects smashed windows and scrawled anarchist symbols on the door of the Metropolitan Republican Club on East 83rd Street early Friday before an appearance by right-wing provocateur Gavin McInnes.

They also left behind threatening notes, calling McInnes a “hipster-fascist clown” and threatening: “Our attack is merely a beginning. We are not passive, we are not civil, and we will not apologize.”

After McInnes’s speech Friday evening, members of his group The Proud Boys clashed with protesters in the street outside the club, leading to three arrests.

Molinaro says he wouldn’t have invited Proud Boys leader to GOP club
By Yoav Gonen

October 15, 2018 | 2:23pm | Updated October 15, 2018 | 2:37pm

GOP gubernatorial candidate Marc Molinaro said Monday that he wouldn’t have invited the founder of a far-right organization to address the Metropolitan Republican Club on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

The appearance of Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes’ club on Friday was followed by violent beat-downs of protesters outside that appeared to involve dozens of members of the group.

“I wouldn’t have invited [the Proud Boys],” Molinaro told NY1, referring to the group that Twitter suspended last month after calling it “violent” and “extremist.”

“I wasn’t aware of them, I don’t know them nor do I tolerate that kind of behavior or language,” Molinaro added.

The NYPD arrested three protesters that night but, as of late Sunday, none of the Proud Boys members were in custody.

On Monday, the 19th Precinct released photos of two suspects who allegedly vandalized the Metropolitan Club to protest McInnes’ appearance.

On Saturday, Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted while on a political trip in Florida that “Hate is never welcome in NYC and we will punish those responsible — whether they threw punches or incited violence — to the fullest extent of the law.”

On Sunday, following questions about why NYPD members at the scene of the violence had failed to arrest those who attacked protesters, Gov. Andrew Cuomo called for probes by both the FBI and state police.

McInnes couldn’t be reached for comment.

More Proud Boys surrender for brawl outside GOP club
By Ben Feuerherd
October 22, 2018 | 3:15pm | Updated October 22, 2018 | 4:27pm

Three more members of the Proud Boys surrendered to police on Monday over an Upper East Side brawl following a speech by their founder at the Metropolitan Republican Club.

Irvin Antillon, 41, Douglas Lennan, 40, and Maxwell Hare, 26, were all hit with assault and riot charges after they turned themselves in at the 19th Precinct stationhouse on Monday, police said.

Member of the Proud Boys — which has been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center — brawled with leftist protesters about a block from the Metropolitan Republican Club after the group’s founder, Gavin McInnes, delivered a speech at the club on Friday, Oct. 12.

Three protesters were arrested after the brawl that night for allegedly stealing a backpack from a Proud Boy.

The NYPD did not arrest any members of the group that night.

Last week, two members of the group turned themselves in for taking part in the brawl.

Geoffrey Young, 38, was charged with riot and assault and John Kinsman, 39, was charged with attempted gang assault, attempted assault, riot and criminal possession of a weapon after they surrendered to cops.

Police are also searching for three protesters who were involved in the melee that night.

Second Proud Boys member arrested for assault in NYC brawl

A second member of the alt-right hate group Proud Boys was busted by the NYPD for a brawl with antifa counter-protesters — as a number of other members of the organization discussed their surrender, a high-ranking police source confirmed.

John Kinsman, 39, turned himself in to Manhattan’s 19th Precinct Friday morning and was charged with attempted gang assault, attempted assault, riot and criminal possession of a weapon for the Oct. 12 beatdown against a trio of antifa members who were protesting Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes’ speech at the Metropolitan Republican Club, police and law enforcement sources said.

Prosecutors described Kinsman as the “single most vicious” of the Proud Boys brawlers, during a Friday evening arraignment, where he was held on $25,000 bond.

Kinsman — who has a large “Proud Boys” tattoo on his right arm — nodded multiple times as his lawyer, Ronald Hart, argued the charges were too severe and the case had been overtly politicized.

Proud Boys has been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

“Conversations” about surrendering “are ongoing” with at least another seven members wanted for the attack, police sources added, while McInnes told the New York Times the members would be in custody “tonight.”

Prosecutors said Friday a total of 10 suspects were involved in the attack.

Geoffrey Young, 38, was arrested yesterday for the brawl and was released on his own recognizance Friday afternoon for rioting and attempted assault charges.

Young was caught on surveillance video punching a counter-protester in the face, putting them in a headlock and kicking a second counter-protester in the stomach, prosecutors said. A person who witnessed the attack and filmed it captured Young kicking a counter-protester in the head at least three times, court papers said.

A lawyer for Young said he had the right to defend himself against the counter-protesters, who were throwing bottles at him and the other Proud Boys.

Police tried to get Young to convince his fellow group members to surrender, a source said, but it’s unclear if he succeeded.

Proud Boys member gets makeover for court appearance

He’s like a whole new man, er, Boy!

One of the Proud Boy goons busted last week over a brawl with Antifa protesters outside an Upper East Side Republican club underwent a total makeover for his court appearance Thursday.

John Kinsman, 39, shaved his long, scruffy beard, chopped off his scraggly hair and ditched his Carhartt overalls for a gray suit and tie.

The World Trade Center steel inspector was in Manhattan Criminal Court to find out whether he’d been indicted for the Oct. 12 melee outside the Metropolitan Republican Club — he hasn’t been yet.

He was nearly unrecognizable with his short-cropped hair gelled back and donning a pair of stylish black-rimmed glasses.

Members of the far-right Proud Boys — which has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center — got into a fracas with leftist protesters after the group’s founder, Gavin McInnes, delivered a speech at the usually staid club.

Kinsman, one of five Proud Boys arrested so far , was previously described by Assistant DA Joshua Steinglass as the “single most vicious of all the attackers” that night.

According to prosecutors, Kinsman body slammed, repeatedly punched and stomped on an Antifa member all while a cigarette dangled from his mouth.

The father of two faces assault, attempted gang assault and riot raps.

Attorney Ronald Hart said last week in court that “The Proud Boys did not instigate this fight” and that Kinsman had been overcharged because of the surrounding publicity.

In addition to Kinsman, Irvin Antillon, 41, Douglas Lennan, 40, Maxwell Hare, 26, and Geoffrey Young, 38, have been charged in connection to the beatdown.

Kinsman is due back in court Dec. 6.

Another Proud Boys member busted for brawl outside club
By Allie Griffin and Tamar Lapin
October 26, 2018 | 12:28am |

Yet another member of the Proud Boys was nabbed by the NYPD over a brawl outside the Upper East Side Republican club, cops said.

David Kuriakose, 35, was arrested and charged with riot and assault Wednesday for the Oct. 12 melee with leftists Antifa protesters, that erupted after a speech by the far-right group’s founder Gavin McInnes at the Metropolitan Republican Club.

Kuriakose was arraigned Wednesday and is out on $5,000 bail.

The Old Westbury, NY, resident is one of at least six members of the Proud Boys to get charged in the brawl.

Police are also searching for three protesters who were involved in the melee that night.

Feces Book removes Proud Boys after Manhattan brawl
By Joe Tacopino
October 30, 2018 | 9:14pm | Updated October 31, 2018 | 4:55pm

The far-right extremist group Proud Boys has been removed from Facebook following a brawl in Manhattan that led to at least six arrests.

The group and its founder, Gavin McInnes, were banned from the social media platform on Tuesday as part of the company’s effort to remove hate speech and hate organizations from its site.

“We’re in the process of removing The Proud Boys and Gavin McInnes from Facebook and Instagram in line with our policies against hate organizations and figures,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.

The site will also remove any “praise and support” for the group once it becomes aware of it.

“We will continue to review content, Pages, and people that violate our policies, take action against hate speech and hate organizations to help keep our community safe,” the company said.

The action from Facebook comes after members of Proud Boys were arrested and charged with riot and assault after a clash with protesters near the Metropolitan Republican Club on the Upper East Side on Oct. 12.
