Philadelphia developer killed in stabbing near Rittenhouse Square

A prominent Philadelphia real estate developer was stabbed to death following an altercation late Thursday night just blocks from Rittenhouse Square.

Philadelphia police identified the victim as 37-year-old Sean Schellenger, who is the owner of Streamline Solutions.

Police say it happened just before 11 p.m. at 17th and Chancellor streets.

In a Friday morning press conference, Philadelphia Police Captain John Ryan said Schellenger was a passenger in a vehicle with two other men.

When they came upon another car blocking the street, Ryan said, Schellenger and the two other men got out of their vehicle to see if they can help move traffic along. That's when a man on the bicycle approached the scene.

Police say an argument ensued between Schellenger and the man on the bike.

"The man on the bike pulled a large knife from his backpack,"
Ryan said.

The two got into an altercation and Schellenger was stabbed once in the back, police say.

Schellenger was taken to Jefferson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead 20 minutes later.

The suspect is described as black male, light skinned, approximately 6' tall, medium build, wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts, and carrying a black backpack. Police say the suspect left the bike at the scene. They say he may have been a delivery person as a warming bag was also left behind.

Police say five men tried to chase down the suspect, but weren't able to catch up to him. He was last seen going northbound through Rittenhouse Square.

A college student has surrendered to authorities over the stabbing death of a Philadelphia real estate developer during a fight about street traffic.

After hugging his sobbing mother and wiping away his own tears , 20-year-old Michael White walked out of True Gospel Tabernacle Fambly Church in South Philadelphia Friday evening into the custody of a half-dozen police officers.

White turned himself over to police on allegations he stabbed 37-year-old Sean Schellenger at 17th and Chancellor streets in the city's Rittenhouse section nearly 24 hours before.

Schellenger and two friends were riding in a Mercedes-Benz when they got stuck in traffic near The Warwick Hotel. Police said the men exited the car and got into an argument with another man over the traffic. A scuffle ensued that ended with Schellenger being stabbed in the back, police said. He later died at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

White, a college student at nigger Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, was either making a food delivery or driving an Uber at the time of the altercation. He didn't speak to reporters gathered inside the church.

Bishop Ernest McNear, who worked with police to set up the peaceful surrender through a program at the church, said White is remorseful.

"He wanted to do the right thing and the fambly did too," McNear said. The bishop and other program members said they will meet with White to provide him guidance as the case progresses.

White was taken to Philadelphia Police Headquarters where he will be questioned by homicide detectives. Charges have not yet been filed.

Schellenger was chief executive officer of Streamline, a real estate company in Philadelphia. The company's chief operating officer, Mike Stillwell, told NBC10 in an email, that he worked side-by-side with Schellenger for a decade.

"For 10 years, I spent everyday with him: during work, after work, weekends, and every family vacation I had over the last 5 years sean was there," Stillwell said. "Now, he is gone."

Suspect in Rittenhouse Stabbing Case Off House Arrest, Still Faces 3-Degree Murder Charges

A Philadelphia judge denied a request to reduce charges for a 21-year-old college student accused of stabbing and killing a real estate developer last summer.

Michael White is facing third-degree murder charges in the July 12th death of Sean Schellenger near Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square. White's lawyers called the case a "confluence of race and class," citing alleged disparaging racial remarks Schellenger made during the confrontation.

According to White's attorney, Dan Stevenson, Schellenger said, "I'm going to beat the black off you" before the fight turned bloody.

A toxicology report later determined that 37-year-old Schellenger had a blood alcohol level of .199, more than double the legal limit to drive, and tested positive for cocaine.

At Tuesday's preliminary hearing, White's lawyers asked Municipal Court Judge Charles Hayden to drop the third-degree murder charges against White.

"This was a situation where a rich, white man using cocaine ... was in the process of taking White to the ground," Stevenson said. "It was not an aggressive move on White's part at all."

Hayden denied the request, but agreed to remove White off house arrest.

"This young man does seem to be someone who is going to follow the rules," Hayden said.

Schellenger's family praised the decision and thanked the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. His mother, Linda Schellenger, said justice had been served.

Third-degree murder carries a possible maximum sentence of 20 to 40 years. White is also charged with voluntary manslaughter and possessing an instrument of crime.

Witness statements made during Tuesday's hearing described a verbal argument gone horribly wrong.

Schellenger had been out partying with friends and was traveling in a black Mercedes when the incident unfolded.

Earlier in the night, Schellenger had bumped into Philadelphia restaurateur William Jordan outside Rogue. They jumped into Jordan's Mercedes and were heading down Chancellor Street toward 17th Street when traffic came to a stop.

For reasons not revealed in court Tuesday, Schellenger got out of Jordan's car and exchanged words with the driver of a car that was idling in front of them.

White, who was working as a delivery man that night, road up on his red bicycle and "inserted himself" in the conversation, witness Erik Peterson, a server at a nearby restaurant, said.

Neither Peterson or Jordan heard what happened next, but both witnesses said White and Schellenger engaged, first verbally and then physically. Jordan said he heard White yell "Do you want this? You don't want this."

Schellenger advanced toward White, both Peterson and Jordan said in court. The former wrestler lowered his head and shoulders and grabbed White by the waist, lifting his feet off the ground.

"It looked his like he wanted to drop him in a wrestling move," Jordan said.

Jordan screamed for the two to stop fighting when he saw White retrieve a 6-inch black steel knife from his backpack.

Jordan will never know if Schellenger heard him. He continued to advance and tackled White to the ground as the knife came down into Schellenger's back.

Wounds were later found in his back ribs, left lung and aorta, according to the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office.

When it was over, White stood up, Jordan said. The knife was still in his hand.

"[White] looked shocked," Jordan, Schellenger's friend of 10 years, said in court.

White and Jordan looked at each other for several seconds, Jordan said, before the 21-year-old ran down Chancellor Street.

In the coming days, the Morgan State University student turned himself into police and cooperated with the district attorney's office. He even led them to his knife, Stevenson said.

Greg Thompson, a spokesman for White's family, said, the young man carried a weapon for protection because he often worked late into the night.

Outside the courthouse Tuesday, fellow couriers unfurled a banner in support of White. "Couriers in solidarity with Michael White," the banner read.

White had been on house arrest with electronic monitoring since two bail advocacy groups posted his bail after first-degree murder charges were downgraded in the weeks following his arrest.

He will appear in court again next month.

New Revelations Come To Light In Deadly Rittenhouse Square Stabbing
October 30, 2018 at 10:35 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Months after a deadly stabbing in Rittenhouse Square, new revelations about the crime have come to light. Michael White is accused of killing real estate developer Sean Schellenger in July during a traffic dispute.

White’s attorneys argue it was self-defense, but the prosecution, however, says they have evidence that shows otherwise.

Just three months after being accused of killing a man in Rittenhouse Square, White, a former college student, walked into the Philadelphia Criminal Justice Center on Tuesday morning for his preliminary hearing.

Dozens of his supporters filled the courthouse, along with Schellenger’s family. Schellenger is the businessman that White is accused of fatally stabbing.

“So everybody is going to view this case through their own lens,” said prosecutor Anthony Voci. “The reality is nobody is ever going to know what was going through Sean’s mind that at that time.”

Voci called two witnesses who were on Chancellor Street on July 12 and saw the fatal stabbing.

White was a food courier on a bike passing by Schellenger who had just left a restaurant with friends.

Schellenger was one of three men in a Mercedes that stopped on 17th and Chancellor Streets. Schellenger got out of the car to alleviate a traffic jam on the street, and that’s when a fight broke out between the two.

Both witnesses agree White and Schellenger began arguing on the street, and at some point, White pulled out a knife. He warned Schellenger not to come closer to him, but then Schellenger charged at White, grabbed him by the hips and lifted him off the ground.

That is when White’s hand came down and stabbed Schellenger once in the back.

“I would like to think, based on my knowledge of him through his friends and family, that he was trying to disarm a dangerous person,” said Voci.

But White’s attorney, Dan Stevenson, argued that Schellenger was the aggressor and cited a toxicology report that showed Schellenger may have been under the influence.

“Mr. Schellenger was a large man who was very drunk. His blood alcohol level was .199. He had also been using cocaine,” said Stevenson. “One witness testified when Michael White was standing there with a knife and he physically got his hand up, come no further.”

Stevenson used that argument to try and get the judge to take third-degree murder off the table in the case, but the judge denied that motion.

“On behalf of my son Sean, who is dead, and on behalf of the moms bonded by grief, I am standing here to say that justice was served today,” said Schellenger’s mother, Linda Schellenger.

The judge did rule that White can be taken off house arrest.
