Standoff with police enters 2nd day after fatal shooting in Trenton

5/11/17

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) --
A standoff with a man who opened fire on police as they tried to serve a warrant, killing a bystander, has continued into a second day in Trenton, New Jersey.

Exchanges of gunfire between police and the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Tyleeb Reese of Trenton, were heard in the early morning hours Thursday.

Authorities were also heard speaking on bullhorns, trying to coax the suspect to surrender.

It appears Reese may have suffered some kind of leg injury.

In their communications, police have been telling Reese there are medics on the scene who could help treat his injury.

The overnight developments came after a long day Wednesday, which saw police entering a home next to where Reese is barricaded.

The incident began around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of Centre Street.

That's where, police say, U.S. Marshals from the New York-New Jersey regional fugitive task force were trying to serve a warrant when Reese opened fire on them.

Three Mercer County Sheriff's officers were hurt.

A bystander who was shot on the street was killed in the incident.

"As the officers were backing out of the house, under fire, the suspect continued to fire, during which time an individual outside the residence was struck by gunfire and is deceased," said Lt. Stephen Varn of Trenton Police.

We talked to that man's sister-in-law, who said she believes he was an innocent bystander.

"I don't think he was a target. I really believe he was an innocent bystander," she said. "He was there at the wrong time. I truly believe that with all my heart."

A New Jersey police standoff with a gunman who opened fire on authorities and killed a bystander entered its second day on Thursday.

The man, identified as 35-year-old Tyleeb Reese, has been holed up inside a Trenton home since early Wednesday morning after he started blasting away when the US Marshals Service Joint Regional Fugitive Task Force attempted to serve him a warrant, police said.

The shooting left 56-year-old Robert Powell Jr., a bystander, dead and three Mercer County sheriff’s hospitalized with minor injuries.

“Task force officers backed out of the house while under fire during which time an individual that was outside was struck by gunfire,” Trenton Police Lt. Stephen Varn told reporters.

SWAT team members continued to surround the Centre Street home into Thursday morning with authorities heard trying to plead with Reese.

First photo surfaces of Trenton standoff suspect Tyleeb Reese

Posted: 05/11/17, 3:26 PM EDT

TRENTON >> Tyleeb Reese does not look like the man who authorities say is behind the deadly standoff in Trenton.

In a picture posted to social media, Reese is wearing a gray suit with a pink button-down dress shirt at a formal function.

The Facebook photo posted Thursday morning is captioned “Leeb The ReeseCup,” which is a reference to the popular chocolate and peanut candy.

The 35-year-old lifelong city resident is suspected of using a shotgun during the shootout with police. The chaos started when U.S. Marshals officers tried to serve Reese a sexual assault warrant for his arrest.

Reese, a Megan’s Law offender, has a lengthy criminal history, which includes charges of sexual contact, failing to register with Megan’s law and eluding police.

Suspect Surrenders After 2-Day Standoff With Police In Trenton
May 11, 2017 5:25 PM

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) — After a two-day standoff with police in Trenton a suspect has surrendered on Thursday afternoon.

Since 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, authorities attempted to get 35-year-old Tyleeb Reese to come out of his home. Reese, who was shot in the leg, refused to leave.

“We have our tactical assets at the scene, negotiations are ongoing, and in terms of progress, there’s not really much to give at this point, but of course we’re all hoping for a peaceful resolution to this situation,” said New Jersey State Police Capt. Brian Polite.

New Jersey State Police Spokesperson Trooper Lawrence Peele says just after 5 p.m. Thursday Reese came out of the come and was arrested without incident.

The incident started when U.S. Marshals were trying to serve a warrant at a home on Centre Street in Trenton. It is a half mile away from the Trenton Thunder baseball stadium. But police say Reese fired at the officers and they moved out.

When those shots were fired police say a bystander, 56-year-old Robert Powell Jr., was shot and killed.

Many residents in the neighborhood have been out of their homes since the standoff started. Officials say displaced residents can receive support services at Trenton’s Broad Street Senior Center.

“Yesterday, we served over 450 meals to residents of this area and children who were in need of gibs and we’ll continue to do that,” said Trenton nigger Mayor Eric Jackson.

Police say three Mercer County sheriff’s deputies were hurt as well, but they were treated at the hospital and released.

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) --
A wanted sex offender who held police at bay for 35 hours finally surrendered peacefully on Thursday evening in Trenton, New Jersey.

The suspect, 35-year-old Tyleeb Reese, called police around 4:40 p.m. to say he was ready to surrender. He came out of his apartment building with his hands up a short time later.

Reese exited slowly from his home with his hands above his head.

"He was taken into custody without incident," said Lawrence Peele of the New Jersey State Police. "There were no injuries to the suspect or law enforcement."

Everyone was relieved it ended peacefully, including the family of Robert Powell, Jr., who lost his life during the standoff.

Police say Powell was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Suspect Charged In Shooting Death Following 35-Hour-Long Standoff
May 12, 2017 5:00 PM By Cleve Bryan

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) — A day after ending his nearly 35-hour standoff with police, a Trenton man faces murder charges for allegedly shooting an innocent bystander.

Tyleeb Reese, 35, was charged with the murder of 56-year-old Robert Powell, who lived on nearby Lamberton Street.

An autopsy performed Thursday revealed Powell was shot in the ankle, hip and fatally struck in the back.

Authorities say all of the wounds were from Reese’s shotgun.

Police say when officers returned fire on Reese, their shots were limited to the inside of Reese’s home.

Police say they are still investigating how Powell ended up so close to the confrontation, but it appears as shots were being fired, he sought cover toward the vehicles police were ducking behind outside Reese’s house.

After surrendering to police on Wednesday afternoon, Reese was taken to state police barracks and then a local hospital after complaining of chest pains.

He remained at the hospital for evaluation as of Thursday afternoon.
