Default Kansas basketball nig Carlton Bragg Jr. charged with battery

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas forward Carlton Bragg Jr. has been arrested on suspicion of domestic battery. The Douglas County attorney charged Bragg with a misdemeanor count of domestic battery on Friday afternoon.

The 20-year-old sophomore from Cleveland was taken into custody Thursday and accused of causing "reckless bodily harm to a family member," according to booking records. Court documents say a 911 caller said Bragg struck her and pushed down some stairs during an argument. He faces a fine and six months in jail if convicted.

Kansas associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said the school is aware of the situation and was still gathering facts. Bragg has been suspended from the team indefinitely.

Students reacted on Friday night to the allegations.

“KU basketball is something we hold in high regard and it’s a tradition that spans farther, it’s something that Kansas is known for, and to hear he is being arrested for an alleged attack, like that is upsetting,” said senior Rachel Asbury.

"They got to do what they got to do; if it means cutting him from the team because he’s a bad influence on the players and it’s a distraction, the main goal is to win a championship, and something like that has to take it off the team,” said senior Samuel Tenebaum.

“It’s just an unfortunate event and for it to happen during the season and we’re number two in the nation, and we’re about to start a good streak going into 2017.”

Bragg has appeared in all nine games with five starts for the third-ranked Jayhawks this season, and is averaging 7.8 points and 5.3 rebounds in 16 minutes.

Kansas basketball released the following statement:
Kansas Head Basketball Coach Bill Self announced Friday afternoon that sophomore forward Carlton Bragg Jr. will not play in Saturday’s game against Nebraska.

Bragg was charged Friday by the Douglas (Kan.) County District Attorney with one count of battery, a Class B person misdemeanor.

“Carlton and I have spoken,” Self said. “He certainly understands the circumstances surrounding this issue. We are taking this charge very seriously; we’re going to hold him out from competition as we continue to gather facts.”
