Four juveniles were arrested in a series of mob-style attacks on Temple University's campus this weekend that left students hurt, police and university officials said.

Between 25 and 50 young people were taken into custody by Philadelphia police on Friday night for the incidents that happened in the area of Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, officials said.

The kids were acting rowdy, fighting one another and assaulting Temple students, police said.

Temple spokesman Ray Betzner said Friday the juveniles roved across campus for a few hours playing a "cat-and-mouse game" with officers over the evening. A campus alert warning students and staff was sent around 9:30 p.m.

On Monday, Temple officials said four kids were taken into custody for three incidents. Additional information was not yet available.

One student, who was not identified, told the college news site The Tab she was walking with her boyfriend near 16th and Oxford streets around 8 p.m. when they were attacked by two kids.

"My boyfriend ran and got away but the second I tried to run, they grabbed me by my hair and started beating my head and back," she said.

“I somehow got to the other side of Oxford Street by the time they got me to the ground. I remember shoes coming for my face and after that I heard other kids from the group saying ‘Yo chill, yo chill it’s just a girl’ and they pulled my attackers off me."

Joe Lauletta, a parent of another Temple student, posted an angry message to Facebook and shared with NBC10 about his daughter's apparent attack. She ended up in the emergency room because of the beating, he said.

"These sick animals held her down and kicked and stomped on her repeatedly," he wrote. Lauletta said his daughter and two male friends were exiting the subway, coming home from the Temple football game when they were attacked.

Temple officials didn't have an exact number of students who were injured early Monday, but said the investigation was ongoing.

Temple Students Attacked, Officer Thrown To Ground, Police Horse Punched In Assaults
October 24, 2016 11:43 AM

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police say as many as 50 people were detained Friday night following several attacks on Temple University students.

Authorities say a Temple officer and a police horse were also assaulted during the chaos.

Temple Police say four people were arrested and charged with three assaults.

In one attack, police say an 18-year-old girl suffered scrapes and cuts to her leg and her cell phone was smashed. Authorities say her debit card was also taken from her purse.

Police say two other victims had items taken during the assault including an iPhone, a wallet, a back pack and a bluetooth wireless speaker.

Authorities say while investigating the report of flash mobs, police observed 75 to 100 individuals on a corner.

As officers tried to disperse the crowd, police say a 16-year-old came up to the officer’s horse and struck the horse twice in the face.

Officers apprehended the male a short distance later.

That same night a Temple Police officer was assaulted by a 15-year-old male who they observed throwing rocks at passing cars.

Police say the teen threw the Temple officer to the ground causing her to fall on top of her bike. Authorities say the teen ran off and was observed by another officer.

The teen was apprehended and charged with aggravated assault, propulsion of a missile, simple assault, resisting arrest and related offenses.

The officer suffered bruising and scraping to her knee.

Also on Friday night, police say three people were walking on Oxford Street when they were assaulted by a group of about 20 juveniles.

All of the victims were kicked, punched and knocked to the ground.

Authorities say the first victim had her iPhone taken.

A witness saw the assault and was able to identify the defendants to police.

Police say a 15 year old and a 17 year old were charged with aggravated assault, robbery, criminal conspiracy, theft, simple assault and related offenses.

A concerned parent says, “What is upsetting about this is that this was a flash mob of kids on bikes and on foot who were attacking students on campus.”

Temple University put out an alert Friday night regarding the incidents saying: “Increased police activity due to large groups of juveniles along Broad Street on/near Main Campus. Police responding. Avoid area.”

A Temple student tells Eyewitness News he and his girlfriend were also assaulted.

He says around 9:30 Friday night he was leaving work when he saw what looked to be at least 200 juveniles walking in large groups.

He said he overheard police saying the kids were playing the knockout game.

He says a juvenile around 10 years old started shouting obscenities at him and grabbed his phone out of his hand. The student says the juvenile then came back and threw the phone at him, striking him in the face.

Around 15 minutes later, the student says he was walking with his girlfriend when they were approached by at least seven juveniles. The student says he went to hit the Temple Police alert button when his girlfriend was struck by one of the juveniles.

As the student was chasing them away, he says he was struck in the face by a someone he estimates to be eight years old.

The student tells CBS3 he believes this type of activity happened both Thursday and Saturday night on campus.

Joe Lauletta

I spent last night in the ER at St. Mary's HospitaI. I received a call from my daughter Christina after my sons football game. She was crying, I couldn't understand her, my heart dropped, I became scared, I said what is the matter? Dad, I was jumped, I'm beat up pretty bad. Where r u? Temple, they stole my phone. We're heading to the police station. I do not hear from her until she gets to her apartment. Rage is running through my mind the whole time. She said she is getting a ride home and wants to go to St. Mary's. I find out that her and her 2 male friends where badly beaten by a group of 30-40 black teenagers on their way home from the Temple football game. This happened after they got off the subway at Broad and Cecil B Moore. These sick animals held her down and kicked and stomped on her repeatedly. Thank god, the people from the pizza place intervened. They arrested 2 people at the scene. I have not let Christina out of my sight, she is resting. Every part of her body is badly bruised, it makes me cry just thinking about it. No broken bones. If you have children at Temple, tell them to be careful. Please keep Christina Lauletta in your thoughts.

4 teens in custody after random attacks near Temple

Police did arrest four boys ranging in age from 15-17. As for the timing on the alert to students, the executive director of public safety told us there was so much going on, and it was so chaotic, they were trying to piece it together before alerting the student body.

Four juveniles were arrested in a series of flash mob-style attacks on Temple University's campus this weekend that left students and police officers hurt, police and university officials said.

Groups of young people, estimated to number between 20 to 100, roved the school's North Philadelphia campus Friday night for nearly two hours causing havoc, authorities said.

Students were punched and kicked, an officer tossed to the ground and stones were thrown at passing cars, police said. Officers from three agencies — the Philadelphia Police Department, Temple University police and SEPTA police —responded to the incidents.

As many as six Temple students hurt in the attacks as they walked around campus between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. that night., along with a university police officer and a Philadelphia police horse.

One student, who was not identified, told the college news site The Tab she was walking with her boyfriend near 16th and Oxford streets around 8 p.m. when they were attacked by two kids.

The student told the news site her boyfriend was able to run away but she was grabbed by the hair and beaten on her head and back. Her name was not given.

“I somehow got to the other side of Oxford Street by the time they got me to the ground. I remember shoes coming for my face and after that I heard other kids from the group saying ‘Yo chill, yo chill, it’s just a girl’ and they pulled my attackers off me," she reportedly said.

Police a 20-year-old man also fell victim to an attack by kids from this group.

At 9 p.m., a Temple police officer was tossed to the ground, landing on top of her patrol bike, while trying to apprehend a 15-year-old boy who was seen throwing rocks at cars driving along Broad Street, police said.

The teen was running from officers when he attacked the patrolwoman, police said. She suffered bruises to her leg and a scrape to her knee. The teen was apprehended a block away.

About 10 minutes later, a 15-year-old teen walked up to an equine officer and punched the animal in the head and face at Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, police said. The mounted officer had been dispatched to help disperse as many as 100 kids at that corner.

He was arrested following a short chase.

Another attack happened about 10 minutes after that, around 9:20 p.m., along the 1700 block of Cecil B. Moore Avenue. Three teens, an 18-year-old girl and two 19-year-old boys, were beaten down by as many as 30 young people, police said.

The girl suffered scrapes and cuts to her legs. Her cellphone was smashed and debit card stolen. Between the boys, an iPhone, wallet, backpack and Bluetooth wireless speaker was taken, according to police.

The suspects in this attack have not yet been arrested.

In all, as many as 50 juveniles were taken into custody and four — ranging in age from 15 to 17 years old — were charged with crimes. The charges include aggravated assault, robbery and assaulting a police officer.

Temple spokesman Ray Betzner said Friday the juveniles played a "cat-and-mouse game" with officers. A campus alert warning students and staff was sent around 9:30 p.m.

Joe Lauletta, the father of one of the apparent victims, posted an angry message to Facebook about his daughter's attack.

He said the youth who attacked his daughter "held her down and kicked and stomped on her repeatedly," referring to the attackers as "sick animals." The attack landed her in the hospital, he added.

NBC10 reached out to Lauletta for an interview.

Lauletta said his daughter and two male friends were exiting the subway, coming home from the Temple football game when they were beaten.

Philadelphia police, Temple police and the university are all investigating the incidents.

Father Speaks Out After Daughter Was One Of Several Temple Students Attacked
October 24, 2016 7:03 PM By Trang Do

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Disturbing video was captured outside of Pizano’s Pizzeria, showing a chaotic scene on Friday night on Temple’s campus.

Dozens of teens were captured surrounding and attacking three students near the intersection of Oxford and Carlisle Streets.

Joe Lauletta’s daughter was one of the victims. “My heart dropped. My worst fear happened. I never ever wanted to see that call from my daughter and to find out that she was beaten black and blue over her whole body, stomped on, kicked in the head and everything. It was just phenomenal, beyond my wildest dreams,” he said.

Temple’s executive director of public safety, Charles Leone, said that some 200 kids and teens showed up at The Pearl Theater around 7:00 p.m. after the gathering was posted on Instagram.

Things then took a turn for the worse.

“Later on, they began splintering off into different groups,” Leone said of the juveniles that gathered. “The groups became increasingly more violent, pushing people, pedestrians going by, both student and non-student. Pushing, hitting, that sort of thing.”

By the end of it all, seven people were assaulted, including a Temple Police officer. A 16-year-old punched a police horse in the face. Police arrested four teenagers in connection with the assaults.

Lauletta says his daughter is back at school, but now forever changed. “She always trusted everybody up until now.”
