Dallas Police: Snipers Shoot 10 Officers, 3 Dead
UPDATED | 9:52 PM July 7, 2016

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A peaceful protest has taken a turn after snipers shot ten police officers, killing three, according to Dallas Police Chief Brown.

Chief Brown sent the following statement via email at 10:35 p.m. Thursday night.

Tonight it appears that two snipers shot ten police officers from elevated positions during the protest/rally. Three officers are deceased, two are in surgery and three are in critical condition. An intensive search for suspects is currently underway. No suspects are in custody at this time. We ask that any citizen with information regarding the shootings tonight call 214-671-3482.

Witnesses told CBS11 they heard multiple gunshots fire off. “Whoever was shooting had an assault rifle — and I know guns. The shots were in rapid succession,” he said.

Another witness recounted police officers yelling at her to get down.

Clarissa Myles was eating at McDonald when the chaos began. “Everyone was screaming, people were running… I saw at least probably 30 shots go off,” she said.
Myles also said she saw two men who were “super upset” with police right before shots rang out. She was shocked that the peaceful protest could take such a sinister turn so quickly.

“Are they really shooting? This was a peaceful protest,” said Myles in disbelief.

Dallas Police: Snipers Shoot 12 Officers & 2 Civilians, 5 Dead
UPDATED | 5:23 AM July 8, 2016

DALLAS (CBSDFW/1080 KRLD) – A peaceful protest against nationwide officer-involved shootings took a sinister turn at about 9 p.m. Thursday night after snipers shot 12 police officers, killing five, according to Dallas Police Chief Brown.

Two civilians were also wounded in the attack.

“Some officers were shot in the back,” said Brown, who added during a press conference that they were attacked “ambush-style.”

One suspect died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound at about 2:50am after an hours-long stand-off with police.

According to Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings three suspects are in custody, two men and one woman. Their names have not been released pending the ongoing investigation.

DART police officer Brent Thompson, 43, was identified as one of the victims fatally shot by snipers during Thursday night’s protest in Downtown Dallas. Officer Thompson is the first officer killed in the line of duty since DART formed a police department in 1989. He joined the DART Police Department in 2009.

Police released more information about what happened during and after the stand-off that ended with a suspect taking his own life.

Sources said the suspect was inside of El Centro college on the second floor during the standoff. The focus was originally on the parking garage across the street but – at some point – moved to the college.

After setting off a “flash bang” device, SWAT moved in and found the suspect dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

DART officer Misty McBride was one of the 11 officers shot taken to Baylor. She suffered two gun shot wounds, one in the arm, another in her abdomen, according to McBride’s father, Richard McBride. Misty McBride has worked with DART for about five years.

Sources also said police had reason to believe the suspect may have left explosives in the area but none were found. The ATF brought in bomb sniffing dogs to clear the college and the parking garage.

Chief Brown: Dallas Shooting Suspect “Wanted To Kill White People”
July 8, 2016 8:07 AM

DALLAS (CBSDFW/1080 KRLD) – In the aftermath of the Thursday night ambush in downtown Dallas that left 5 police officers dead and several more wounded, very little is known about the shooting suspects.

According to Dallas officials, one male suspect is dead and three more, two men and one woman are in custody.

At a Friday morning press conference, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings began by saying that due to the ongoing investigation, “We’re not going to tell you anything about the suspects. We will when it’s the right time, now is not the right time.”

However, Dallas Police Chief David Brown confirmed the death of one of the unidentified suspects that police cornered in a parking garage at El Centro College in the downtown area immediately following the shooting.

According to Brown, police cornered and then negotiated with the suspect for several hours. When talks broke down – they exchanged gunfire with the man. At that point, police sent in a remote vehicle and detonated a bomb – ultimately killing the suspect.

“We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was. Other options would have exposed our officers to great danger” said Brown.

“He seemed lucid during negotiations.” said Chief Brown “He expressed anger for Black Lives Matter.”

Brown admitted that the suspect told police that he was upset over the recent string of police shooting. “The suspect said he was upset at white people” said Brown. “He said he wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers.”

The suspect stated he was not affiliated with any groups and stated that he did this alone.

Dallas sniper wanted to ‘kill whites’
By Yaron Steinbuch
July 8, 2016 | 9:02am

Police killed one of the suspects in the Dallas police massacre Friday morning by detonating a bomb carried by a robot after negotiations broke down with the man — who had railed against cops and white people.

“He was upset about Black Lives Matter, the recent police shootings, he was upset at white people. He wanted to kill white people, especially police officers,” Dallas Police Chief David Brown said in a press briefing.

“Our hostage negotiating team did an exceptional job getting this suspect to talk,” the city’s top cop said about the man, who had been holed up for hours in an El Centro College garage.

“He said he was not affiliated with any groups,” Brown said. “He said he did this alone.”

Brown said cops had no choice but to use the bomb: “Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger.”

The new information emerged after snipers gunned down five police officers and injured seven others during protests over two fatal police shootings of black men — an explosion of violence described as the deadliest day for law enforcement since 9/11.

Two civilians also were wounded, including Shetamia Taylor, 37, who was shot in the calf and was undergoing surgery Friday morning, said Mayor Mike Rawlings.

Four of the slain cops were members of the Dallas Police Department and one was a Dallas Area Rapid Transit cop, officials said.
