SANTA MONICA -- A 47-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting and strangling two women who were found dead in Santa Monica over an 18-month period ending in 2002 was charged today with capital murder.

Edric Dashell Gross was arrested Wednesday while sitting in Pan Pacific Park in Los Angeles, said Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis. He is accused of killing Jacqueline Ovsak and Dana Caper, both described as transients.

Gross was charged today with two counts of murder. The criminal complaint includes the special circumstance allegations of rape of both victims, multiple murder and burglary of one victim -- making Gross eligible for the death penalty.

Prosecutors will decide later in the case whether to seek death for Gross.

According to Lewis, the body of Ovsak, 42, was found April 5, 2001, by construction workers in an abandoned building in the 1500 block of Seventh Street. The victim was known to frequent the area, according to police.

Caper's body was found Oct. 29, 2002, on the side of the bluffs in the 800 block of Palisades Park. The 41-year-old woman lived along the bluffs, police said.

"Both homicides were investigated until leads ran out and the cases went cold," Lewis said.

He said both investigations were reopened in September 2007, and DNA processing and new leads helped identify Gross and link him to both killings.

Gross was booked at the Santa Monica Jail, with bail set at $1 million bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned
Friday at the Airport Branch Courthouse.

Sentencing for Gross is scheduled for June 24. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to prosecutors.
