Defendant asks judge for computer to research his shooting spree

An ex-con who callously opened fire on a Brooklyn street in 2014, shooting three bystanders and only stopping when he was run down with a car by a relative of one of his victims, asked a judge for a computer Tuesday, claiming he needs one to better defend himself in court.

Cush Wright-El, who dumped his court appointed attorney to represent himself, says he can’t review DVD footage of his shooting spree because his Rikers cell didn’t come equipped with a laptop.

“It is very difficult for me to check out these DVDs I have, because I don’t have a computer ,” the 25 year old whined to Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Suzanne Mondo.

“Is there anyway you can send something to Rikers?” Wright-El pleaded.

“Are there not computers at Rikers?” Judge Mondo asked incredulously.

“Not that I can use,” he said.

“Didn’t you already go over this footage with your attorney?” she responded.

“I would like to go over them myself,” he shot back.

After a brief pause, Mondo replied flatly, “I have no computer to give you.”

The alleged gunman chuckled creepily in response, before he was cuffed and led out of court.

Wright-El — who had been arrested twice for attempted murder in Baltimore— fired six times on quiet Bed-Stuy street in October 2014, hitting a 57-year-old man and his 16-year-old nephew as the two played chess together.

He then ran down the street, firing three more times and hitting a 61-year-old woman. All the victims survived.

The con faces up to 75 years in prison if convicted on all three felony counts of attempted murder.

Alleged gunman: I’m only guilty of looking for love on Facebook
By Emily Saul
April 22, 2016 | 1:20am

A Baltimore man on trial for allegedly opening fire into a crowd of people in Brooklyn, hitting three, told jurors the judge and district attorney are framing him for the shooting — saying the only thing he is “guilty of is looking for love on Facebook.”

Cush Wright-El, who has been representing himself after firing a series of lawyers, told jurors he was nowhere near the October 2014 shooting of William Mayo, Kayshawn Mayo and Judith Daniels in Bedford-Stuyvesant and was being “framed” for the crime.

Wright-El was nabbed after a relative of two of the victims, Demetrius Mayo, jumped into his car and ran over him after the shooting.

“I came here simply because I thought I’d found love on Facebook,” the 26 year-old ex-con rambled during his summations.

Assistant District Attorney Timothy Gough contested Wright-El’s lovelorn summations, reminding jurors that a gun was found in his jacket and he was wearing the same coat and sneakers as the gunman seen in security footage.

Wright-El faces up to 75 years in prison. The jury begins deliberations Monday.

‘Love-seeking’ gunman found guilty of attempted murder

Cush Wright-El

A Baltimore man who claimed that he was in the city just “looking for love on Facebook’’ when he opened fire on a crowd of people in Brooklyn in 2014, striking three, was convicted Monday of attempted murder.

Cush Wright-El, 27, now faces up to 75 years behind bars.

Wright-El represented himself at trial and insisted he was framed and nowhere near the October shooting that injured a 57-year-old man, his 16-year-old nephew and a 61-year-old woman.

But prosecutors didn’t buy it and reminded jurors throughout the proceedings that a gun was found in Wright-El’s jacket and he was wearing the same coat and sneakers as the gunman seen in security footage.

Wright-El was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment. He is set to be sentenced May 10.

‘Love-seeking’ gunman sentenced to 25 years in prison
By Emily Saul
May 10, 2016 | 3:40pm

A Baltimore man who claimed he was only “guilty” of “looking for love on Facebook” and not the random shooting spree of which he was actually convicted was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years in prison.

Before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Suzanne Mondo handed down the order, gunman Cush Wrigh-El futilely attempted to push the sentencing date back 30 days, vaguely claiming he needed to “tie up some additional affairs.”

Wright-El, who represented himself after canning a series of court-appointed lawyers, was convicted last month for shooting William Mayo, his 16 year-old nephew Kayshawn Mayo, and Judith Daniel when he opened fire on a tranquil Bed-Stuy block in Oct. 2014. He was collared after a fast thinking relative of the victims jumped in a car and ran him over.

“I have some family affairs I’d like to take care of,” the 27-year-old told the already irate judge.

“You’ll need to be more specific,” Judge Mondo said crisply. “You’re saying you need to stay housed at your current facility?”

“My family’s in Baltimore, and it’s difficult for them to be here,” he finally admitted.

“Well, did you tell them they needed to be here?” Mondo shot back.

“I have been in touch with them,” he responded.

“I’m really not inclined to put over the sentencing,” Mondo snapped, attempting to move on.

Wright-El, who sported short dreadlocks pushed back with a headband throughout the trial, then bluntly brought up his hair.

“About my hair, is there something you can do about it not getting cut?” Wright-El asked the judge. “I need some document to preclude the cutting of the hair on religious grounds.”

Mondo curtly told him the document needed to be submitted to the Department of Correction, not her, and then sentenced him to 25 years in prison and five years probation.

Wright-El faced up to 75 years in prison on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment.

During the trial, Wright-El told jurors he was being “framed” for the crime.

“I came here simply because I thought I’d found love on Facebook,” the ex-con rambled during his summations. “That’s what I thought, it didn’t turn out that way.”

“It is truly remarkable that more innocent people weren’t injured or even killed when this defendant pulled out a gun and callously fired nine shots, in broad daylight, in a residential area,” Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement. “He deserves to spend a very long time behind bars for his outrageous and criminal behavior.”
