State Supreme Court Rejects Einhorn's Appeal

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - April 11, 2007 - The state Supreme Court rejected the appeal Wednesday of former hippie guru Ira Einhorn's murder conviction.

Einhorn, who spent nearly 17 years on the lam in Europe, is serving a life sentence without parole for the 1977 murder of girlfriend Holly Maddux.

The former anti-war activist and self-proclaimed futurist was convicted in abstentia in 1993, then granted a new trial after his capture that ended with another conviction in 2002.

The 30-year-old Maddux's mummified body was found in a steamer trunk in the West Philadelphia apartment the couple shared.

Neither Philadelphia prosecutors nor defense lawyer William T. Cannon immediately returned telephone messages left Wednesday.

A man convicted of the brutal killing of his ex-girlfriend and hiding her body in a locked closet for years has been turned down in an effort to get the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to consider his case.

The court on Wednesday declined to take up a lower appeals court ruling earlier this year, leaving in place Ira Einhorn's conviction for the 1977 murder of Holly Maddux in Philadelphia.

Einhorn fled the country and spent nearly 17 years hiding in Europe before being returned to the United States and convicted in 2002.

In February, Superior Court said a "vast and compelling quantum" of evidence was presented at trial to show Einhorn killed Maddux.

The 74-year-old Einhorn is an inmate at Houtzdale State Prison. A telephone message for Einhorn's lawyer wasn't returned.

Ex-Girlfriend Killer Ira Einhorn Moves to Minimum-Security Prison

Convicted murderer Ira Einhorn is shown in this police identification photograph taken at Pennsylvania's maximum-security prison July 20, 2001 in Graterford, Pennsylvania. Einhorn, a former hippie guru, was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend Holly Maddux by a jury in Criminal Justice Center October 17, 2002 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A man convicted of killing of his ex-girlfriend and hiding her body in a locked closet for years has been moved from the medium-security prison he's been held at since his 2002 conviction to a minimum-security prison.

Pennsylvania Department of Corrections spokeswoman Susan McNaughton tells Philly.com that 75-year-old Ira Einhorn was moved earlier this week from State Correctional Institution Houtzdale to SCI Laurel Highlands in Somerset County.

McNaughton declined to comment on why he was moved. She says prison officials plan to eventually return Einhorn to the Houtzdale institution.

Einhorn was convicted in the 1997 killing of Holly Maddux in Philadelphia. He fled the country and spent nearly two decades hiding in Europe before being returned to the United States.

Einhorn's attorney didn't immediately return a request for comment.

Ira Einhorn From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born into a middle-class Jewish family, Einhorn studied at the University of Pennsylvania. He became active in ecological groups and was part of the counterculture, anti-establishment and anti-war movements of the 1960s and 1970s.
