City students are skipping class once every 10 days

More than 40 percent of students at 127 of the city’s 1,256 elementary and middle schools were “chronically absent” last year, according to figures released Tuesday.

That means they skipped class at least once every 10 days in a 180-day school year.

Researchers have long noted a correlation between school attendance and academic performance, and 18 schools with the absentee students have landed on the city and state list of academic laggards.

Among them are PS 50 in East Harlem and PS 123 in Central Harlem, where half the kids were chronically absent.

In The Bronx, 47 percent were persistent no-shows at PS 112; and at PS 396 in Brooklyn’s East New York, 58 percent of the kids were excessively absent.

Virtually all the schools with bad attendance were in the city’s poorest neighborhoods.

But other schools showed that demography is not destiny.

Only 1 percent of students were chronically AWOL at the Corona Arts & Science Academy in Queens, and the Success Academy Charter schools in Harlem reported near-perfect attendance.

“While attendance in the 2014-15 school year was the highest it’s ever been, we aren’t satisfied until every student is attending school each day,” said Department of Education spokeswoman Devora Kaye.

The attendance rate citywide at elementary and middle school was 92.1 percent last year, officials said.
