Democratic Socialists have become a political force in NYC

Spurred by the election of commie spics Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Congress and Julia Salazar to the state Senate, the Democratic Socialists of America has become a potent political force to be reckoned with in New York City politics.

The far-left group was once seen as part of a fringe movement. But at least eight candidates for public advocate — considered a stepping stone to the mayoralty — have filled out the DSA’s 42-question questionnaire in a bid to win its endorsement in the special election to replace incoming state Attorney General-elect Letitia James, who currently holds the post.

In a special, nonpartisan election that will take place in the middle of winter and could include as many as a dozen candidates, a bloc of votes from committed Democratic socialists could determine the winner.

Among the candidates cozying up to the DSA are Brooklyn Councilmembers Jumaane Williams and Rafael Espinal, Assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell of Manhattan’s West Side and liberal activist and DSA member Nomiki Konst.

The candidates’ answers show they back nearly the entirety of the DSA’s leftist agenda, including: giving noncitizens the right to vote in municipal elections; supporting illegal strikes by government workers; allowing public funding for pro-Palestinian groups that support the boycott, divestment and sanctions [BDS] movement against Israel; a pledge to refuse campaign contributions from the real-estate industry; endorsing government-controlled “universal” rent control and health care; lessening criminal sentences for violent criminals; protecting sex workers; and providing free CUNY tuition for all.

James will become AG on Jan. 1, and Mayor de Blasio is expected to schedule the election for sometime in February.

Analysts said the surge in popularity for democratic socialism has been propelled by younger voters first inspired by the 2016 presidential candidacy of Bernie Sanders.

But it was Ocasio-Cortez’s stunning upset victory over veteran Queens-Bronx Rep. Joe Crowley in the June Democratic primary that provided clear evidence of the DSA’s growing clout in the Big Apple. She whipped Crowley, also the Queens Democratic Party chairman, in a 15-point landslide, thanks to a surge in young voters in neighborhoods like Astoria.

Salazar trounced veteran Brooklyn state Sen. Martin Dilan in gentrifying Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick.

“Everyone wants DSA’s endorsement. When they endorse a candidate, they go all out. They show up. They knock on doors,” said political consultant Rebecca Katz, who worked for Cynthia Nixon, a candidate for governor who was endorsed by the DSA. “DSA is growing in importance every year. They’re getting some wind.”

And the DSA holds its candidates accountable.

The group endorsed Williams for lieutenant governor earlier this year, but during a candidates’ meeting last week, a DSA questioner grilled him for taking tens of thousands of dollars in campaign donations from real-estate interests after vowing he would not, according to an audio recording of the meeting obtained by The Post.

A DSA leader said the gain in popularity is no fluke, and politicians who cater to the corporate class have been put on notice.

“DSA has definitely proven itself to be a force in NYC politics this year,” the group’s Sam Lewis said.

”We are going to stay focused on building grass-roots power this year, but more and more candidates are realizing they need to pick a side. You can’t stand with working people if you are bankrolled by the powerful and privileged.”

Curt Schilling ripped for his attack on Ocasio-Cortez’s intelligence
By Yaron Steinbuch
December 13, 2018 | 12:54pm

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling took a swing at Bronx Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, slamming her intelligence after she complained that her ideas are being scrutinized because of her young age.

The 29-year-old Democratic Socialist responded this week to what she considered a double standard she has observed in press coverage of herself compared to House Speaker Paul Ryan, the Boston Globe reported.

“Double standards are Paul Ryan being elected at 28 and immediately being given the benefit of his ill-considered policies considered genius; and me winning a primary at 28 to immediately be treated with suspicion & scrutinized, down to my clothing, of being a fraud,” she tweeted.

Schilling, an outspoken conservative, responded to Ocasio-Cortez’s complaint by tweeting that she is “being scrutinized and treated with suspicion because every time you speak you say something more stupid than the last time you spoke.

He added: “You are a college graduate and likely the most unintelligent person, man or woman, in our government.’’

Rep. David Cicilline (Dago-Rhode Island) quickly went to bat for Ocasio-Cortez, telling Schilling that he should worry about his debt to the Ocean State before going after Ocasio-Cortez.

“Curt, you still owe my state $75 million,” Cicilline tweeted. “Maybe worry about that before you go after [Ocasio-Cortez] again.”

In 2010, Rhode Island invested $75 million to lure Schilling’s video game company, 38 Studios, to Providence from Massachusetts. The company ran out of money and went bankrupt.

The company laid off its staff in 2012 and filed for bankruptcy. Rhode Island sued and recouped some money. The case has been settled.

Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez compares refugees to baby Jesus
By Max Jaeger
December 25, 2018 | 3:54pm

Even a holiday greeting from newly-elected Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sparked controversy when she compared refugees to the baby Jesus.

“Joy to the World! Merry Christmas everyone – here’s to a holiday filled with happiness, family, and love for all people. 🌎(Including refugee babies in mangers + their parents.),” the self-described Democratic Socialist wrote in a Christmas Day tweet referencing the myth of Jesus’s birth in a manger.

Critics harangued her for getting political on the holidays.

“Even on Christmas, you just can’t stay away from politics. I genuinely feel sad for you. Merry Christmas!” one user replied.

But “Jesus was incredibly political,” an Ocasio-Cortez defender tweeted.

“Are you saying that Jesus was a refugee you blithering idiot? Mary & Joseph we’re off registering for the census so they could be taxed. Gawd, you’re amazing,” replied former conservative talk-radio host Neil Boortz.

Still, many consider Christ a refugee. Days after his birth, his parents were forced to flee Bethlehem to Egypt because Judean king Herod heard that the “king of the Jews” was born, became jealous, and ordered the killing of male babies under the age of two, according to the Gospel of Matthew.

“A family is forced to flee their homeland for fear of persecution. This is the classic modern-day definition of a refugee,” Jesuit priest James Martin wrote in the Catholic publication American Magazine.

It’s not the first time Ocasio-Cortez’s comments on the Middle East have caused a stir. During her successful campaign last year to unseat longtime Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley, she called Israel an “occupation” force in the Palestinian territories — a comment she later tried to walk back.

“Middle Eastern politics is not exactly at my kitchen table every night,” she said at the time.

Earlier this month, Ocasio-Cortez caused a stir when she claimed that “$21 [trillion] in Pentagon accounting errors” could fund universal medicare — a claim later debunked by the Washington Post’s fact-checking department.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign may have illegally paid her boyfriend
By Ben Feuerherd

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leaves orientation for new members of Congress with her boyfriend, Riley Roberts. AP

Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign may have illegally paid her boyfriend through a political action committee during her congressional race, a Republican group alleges in a new complaint with the FEC.

The Coolidge Reagan Foundation alleged in the complaint that Brand New Congress PAC paid Ocrazio-Cortez’s boyfriend, neckbeard Riley Roberts, for marketing services after the PAC was hired by her campaign.

Using the third-party PAC to pay her boyfriend may have violated campaign-finance laws, a lawyer for the Coolidge Reagan Foundation told The Post.

“It is totally legal, as a candidate, to hire family members, people you know to work for you. But they didn’t do that,” said Attorney Dan Backer.

“Instead of paying him directly, they paid him through an intermediary — in order to obscure the fact that they paid him. The FEC should investigate and find out if that’s the case. That’s the allegation,” Backer added.

The Coolidge Reagan Foundation is seeking the FEC to investigate if the campaign violated finance laws that state campaign contributions “shall not be converted by any person to personal use.”

But the PAC that hired Roberts told Fox News, who first reported the story, that all the payments were legally sound.

“[Roberts] is a professional digital marketing and growth consultant who specializes in social media presence and subscriber engagement,” a spokeswoman for Brand New Congress PAC told Fox.

“He was hired through a two-month trial period, beginning on August 3, 2017, and worked through the end of September 2017,” the spokeswoman added. “Services to the Brand New Congress PAC consisted of advertising strategies for potential growth, developing metrics, and aiding in execution of strategy to increase brand awareness for the PAC as a whole.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s office did not immediately respond.

AOC sends fundraising email asking for money to defend Omar, Tlaib

WASHINGTON – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign arm sent out a fundraising plea minutes before Thursday’s House vote on an anti-hatred resolution, asking for dollars to defend her and liberal allies Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.

“It’s official – AIPAC is coming after Alexandria, Ilhan and Rashida,” the email began, referring to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

“Rashida, Ilhan and Alexandria have at times dared to question our foreign policy, and the influence of money in our political system. And now, lobbying groups across the board are working to punish them for it.”

The House passed a resolution Thursday afternoon condemning all forms of hatred after Omar made statements widely condemned as anti-Semitic.

The email quotes an “AIPAC activist” – Stephen Fiske – who had told the New York Times that the trio “will not be around in [Congress in ] several years.”

The note went on to point out that “some members of Congress have even gone so far as to claim that ‘questioning support for the U.S.-Israel relationship is unacceptable.’”

In the fundraising plea, “Team AOC” argued that “just a decade ago it was ‘unquestionable’ to not support the war in Iraq.” “And we all saw what resulted from that lack of discussion and negotiation,” the email read.

“Help us build a progressive movement that fights for the honest conversation, inclusiveness and our universal fight with hate with a $27 contribution,” it continued.

Ocasio-Cortez aide describes Crowley as ‘Celtic king’ in new book
By Carl Campanile and Bruce Golding

A new book by a campaign aide to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez casts her upset victory over former Congressman Joseph Crowley in starkly ethnic terms — and reveals how the 10-term incumbent got sandbagged into missing a key debate just two weeks before the election.

Latino activist Ramon Ramirez plans to self-publish his memoir of last year’s election under the title “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: The Democrats’ Surprise.”

A draft manuscript provided exclusively to The Post shows Ramirez describing Crowley’s 6-foot-4 height as “unfortunately proportional to the despotic and solemn air with which he demanded to be revered like the ‘Celtic king.’ ”

In recounting Ocasio-Cortez’s defeat of Crowley, the son of Irish immigrants, Ramirez also crows: “We stripped the Celtic king of a crown that he had received without political or community merit.”

Ramirez details how he and a fellow official of the Pan-American Democratic Association of Queens, William Salgado, worked with Ocasio-Cortez to circumvent Crowley’s refusal to debate the challenger by scheduling a bilingual June 11 showdown at the Jackson Heights Jewish Center — without informing Crowley’s camp.

Ramirez says he had fliers printed and posted before notifying the opposition, which complained of a scheduling conflict and offered to send a surrogate in Crowley’s place.

But the organizers refused, and Ocasio-Cortez wound up having the floor to herself in front of an audience of more than 200 people — and next to an empty chair with Crowley’s name on it.

In his book, Ramirez, 61, describes himself as the “grandfather” among Ocasio-Cortez’s volunteer supporters, and relates how taken he was with the candidate when he and Salgado met her at the Jax Inn diner in Jackson Heights for an April 22 breakfast meeting.

In a lengthy portion of purple prose that seems more fit for a romance novel, Ramirez recalls the “radiant smile” and “big, black eyes” of Ocasio-Cortez, who at 29 is the youngest member of Congress.

“She was dressed in a black, printed jacket that was fitted tight around the waist, which gave a fantastic shape to her slender body,” he writes.

“I opened my eyes and then my lips to express our chemistry, trying to leave the pleasant taste that my message was memorable. She never left a smile hidden, nor did her long lashes make the slightest attempt to stop the emotion from appearing in her eyes: two suns that were always ready to cast her incandescence toward the world around her.”

But while likening Ocasio-Cortez to the Greek goddess Artemis and Joan of Arc, Ramirez — a self-described socialist who boasts of having studied in Russia — says it was her progressive politics that really won his heart as she pledged her support for Medicare for all, free college tuition and defunding ICE.

“This is not a project by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. We are part of a socialist movement at the national level,” he recalls her saying.

Crowley’s former campaign spokesman, Vijay Chaudhuri, and Ocasio-Cortez’s spokesman, Corbin Trent, declined to comment.
