Long Branch stabbing: Man to be held in jail until trial in teen's murder
Updated 4:29 p.m. ET Sept. 13, 2018

FREEHOLD - The 20-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing a 16-year-old Long Branch girl agreed Thursday to be held in jail to await trial in her murder.

Bryan Cordero-Castro, 20, a Guatemalan native who authorities say is in the United States illegally, waived a detention hearing and agreed to be confined to await the outcome of the case.

About nine people who said they are friends of Cordero-Castro sat in the courtroom across the aisle from Wells' family and friends, saying they were there to show support for the defendant.

One of them, Hafett Barrates, 18, of Long Branch, said outside the Monmouth County Courthouse that Cordero-Castro and Wells were inseparable.

"They used to hang out every day,'' Barrates said. "They were together all the time.''

Barrates said he did not know what led up to the stabbing and was surprised to hear about it.

"NJ Man" Pleads Guilty in 16-year-old Ex-girlfriend's Slaying
Authorities said Cordero-Castro had tried to call or text the victim more than 230 times in the nine hours before her death
Published Nov 25, 2019 at 9:02 AM

A New Jersey man has pleaded guilty in the stabbing death of his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend last year.

Twenty-one-year-old Bryan Cordero-Castro of Long Branch pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree aggravated murder and attempted escape.

Monmouth County prosecutors say Madison Wells had broken up with the defendant but agreed to talk to him outside a Long Branch home in September 2018. Several minutes later, authorities said, Wells stumbled into the living room and collapsed with multiple stab wounds.

Authorities said Cordero-Castro had tried to call or text the victim more than 230 times in the nine hours before her death.

Prosecutors are recommending a 30-year manslaughter sentence and a five-year consecutive term on the escape charge. Sentencing is scheduled Feb. 7.

Man who stabbed 16-year-old N.J. girl to death and fled cops is headed to prison
Updated Oct 23, 5:31 PM

A man was sentenced Friday to 35 years in prison for stabbing his 16-year-old girlfriend to death after their breakup and trying to escape from police in Monmouth County.

Bryan Cordero-Castro, 21, must serve 85% of the term imposed by Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Marc C. Lemieux, who sentenced him to 30 years for aggravated manslaughter and five years for escape.

Cordero-Castro pleaded guilty last November to killing Madison Wells outside her relative’s Long Branch home Sept. 8, 2018. The two dated since November 2017 before she ended their relationship, and Cordero-Castro began stalking the teen.
