3 charged in connection to deadly shooting in Kennett; 1 man wanted

KENNETT, Mo. (KFVS) - Three people were charged in connection to a shooting on Sunday night, February 28.

Jatavious Jones, 18, Marquel Rhines, 26, were charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Cotie Whitaker, 32, was charged with hindering the prosecution of a felony and tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution.

According to police, Jones is not in custody. They warned the public to not approach him because he should be considered armed and dangerous.

At the time of the shooting, investigators say Jones had a $125,000 cash-only warrant for his arrest for a May 2020 shooting and a $15,000 warrant for his arrest for a September 2019 domestic assault.

Rhines and Whitaker were taken into custody on Tuesday night in Hayti, Mo. by investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

No-bond warrants were issued for Jones and Rhines, and a $50,000 cash-only warrant was issued for Whitaker.

Rhines and Whitaker will be arraigned on Thursday, March 4.

On Sunday, February 28, police say a victim showed up at the police department saying he had been shot.

A Dunklin County deputy was the first officer on the scene and found Tahmiius Mitchell in the vehicle dead from a gunshot. Another victim who had also been shot, but did not have life-threatening injuries, told police that someone had shot at his vehicle when he was driving on First Street in Kennett.

According to investigators, he said Marquel Rhines fired the gun while Jatavious Jones was driving.

Investigators later found Cotie Whitaker’s Chevrolet Trail Blazer in Hayti, which matched witness statements and surveillance video. They said they also found a 9mm shell casing on the dash of the vehicle.

The investigation is being conducted by the Dunklin County Major Case Squad, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Kennett Police Department and the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office.
