PROVIDENCE, R.I. — An aide in Governor Raimondo's constituent affairs office is accused of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old man and giving him alcohol in his apartment.

Daniel Brown, 54, was charged Tuesday with second-degree sexual assault and procuring alcohol for a person under 21 — a week after he told police he was stabbed in the neck by the 18-year-old man at his apartment in Cranston.

Maj. David Lapatin said Brown was arraigned by a bail commissioner at Rhode Island Hospital, where he is still recovering.

Police had arrested Kenneth Suarez and charged him with the stabbing in Brown's apartment on July 31, but then continued investigating what led up to the assault, Lapatin said. Brown and Suarez didn't know each other before that night, Lapatin said.

The teenager was walking down a street in South Providence when Brown drove up to him and started talking, Lapatin said. That led to the two going to Brown's apartment on Terrace Avenue where, investigators believe, Brown gave Suarez alcohol and touched him "inappropriately," Lapatin said.

Suarez stabbed Brown in reaction, Lapatin said.

Brown was charged in 2014 with second-degree sexual assault on a 19-year-old man in Cranston. However, the attorney general's office didn't pursue the case because the alleged victim refused to cooperate. The Cranston police recently refused to release the arrest report, citing an invasion of Brown's privacy.

Brown works Raimondo's constituent affairs office. In light of the charges, Brown was being placed immediately on paid administrative leave Tuesday, pending an internal investigation, said Josh Block, spokesman at the Department of Administration.
