Student fatally shot inside fraternity house near campus in Newark; suspects at large

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) --
A 23-year-old student was fatally shot during a robbery at a fraternity house in Newark early Monday near the New Jersey Institute of Technology campus.

The shooting happened at about 3 a.m. inside the Tau Kappa Epsilon house on Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Investigators say two masked men went into the back door of the home, tried to rob the students inside and shot one of them.

The victim was rushed to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead.

He has been identified as Joseph Micalizzi of Freehold.

Micalizzi was a junior majoring in mechanical engineering. He made the dean's list in the fall and was in his second year at NJIT after transferring from Brookdale Community College, the university said.

No arrests were immediately made. Police were looking for at least two suspects.

Sources tell Eyewitness News the suspects discarded the clothing used in the robbery, masks and black garments, down the street.
