Default Cashier shot during attempted robbery at Whole Foods in D.C.; negro arrested

Cashier shot during attempted robbery at Whole Foods in D.C.; suspect arrested

The man responsible for shooting a Whole Foods Market cashier during a botched armed robbery has been arrested, D.C. Police said.

Police said Michael Whatley Jr., 28, of Southeast Washington, entered the grocery store along the 600 block of H Street NE, near Union Station, around 10:50 a.m. Sunday. He then approached a clerk and demanded money. A struggle broke out at which point Whatley fired multiple bullets into the employee's body, cops report.

Medics took the male cashier to the hospital in critical condition. He is, however, expected to survive. Despite many others being present in the store at the time of the shooting, no one else was injured.

The suspect fled in a bright red Honda Civic with Zipcar insignia on it. Officers later located the rental vehicle parked near the Minnesota Avenue Metro Station in Northeast. The suspect was nowhere to be found.
