Owner of home recording studio accused of killing aspiring rapper over an unpaid debt

Updated December 3, 2018 at 3:47 PM

Three men gathered for a recording session at a house on Andaloro Way in Deptford Township, but when talk turned to an unpaid debt, the sound of music was replaced with gunshots and screams, and an aspiring rapper was dead.

Marcel J. Steele is charged with murder in the Nov. 28 shooting death of 22-year-old Jodeci Robinson, of Woodbury. Steele’s mother is also charged in the case.

A witness reported seeing a gunman fire several shots as another man ran from the Steele house shortly before 9:30 p.m., according to an affidavit of probable cause

The victim screamed “Stop, stop, stop, stop,” but the shooter kept firing, the witness told police. Multiple witnesses reported hearing six to eight shots.

In the end, Robinson was dead from a gunshot to the back, another man was wounded and Steele was charged with shooting both of them.

The shooting apparently followed a dispute over money.

Robinson picked up a friend and went to Steele’s house on Andaloro to record music that night, the friend told police.

At some point during the evening, Steele asked Robinson about an outstanding debt and the trio traveled to a nearby Wawa, where Robinson withdrew money from an ATM. They returned to the home studio and Steele again asked for his money. When Robinson told him to “chill” and promised he would get his money, Steele pulled out a blue and purple handgun, pointed it at Robinson and repeated his demand, according to the affidavit.

Robinson’s friend ran for the door as gunshots rang out and was shot in the arm as he escaped the house.

His mother, Shasta L. Steele, 41, is charged with endangering an injured victim and obstruction. She is accused of failing to render aid to Robinson or call 911, and of hiding evidence inside the SUV, then moving the vehicle, according to her criminal complaint.
