FORT WORTH, Texas — A Fort Worth police officer is in critical condition and 'in the fight of his life,' said Mayor Betsy Price after the officer was shot early Friday morning while confronting robbery suspects.

The officer, identified as Garrett Hull by the Fort Worth Police Department, was conducting surveillance on three robbery suspects, according to police.

The suspects went inside the Vaquero Sports Bar, located in the 400 block of West Biddison Street, at about midnight in the Worth Heights area.

Police said the suspects robbed the bar, and that's when the officer confronted them. As the suspects were running, one of them turned around and fired, striking the Fort Worth officer in the head. An officer returned fire, killing the suspect who shot officer Hull, according to police. Other officers caught and arrested the two other suspects, a man and woman.

A fellow officer at the scene rushed Officer Hull to John Peter Smith Hospital in his police car.

The officer who was shot is currently in ICU in critical condition," Fort Worth police said in a tweet. "He has family and fellow officers with him. Our officer is courageously fighting at this time. We ask that you keep his recovery in your thoughts."

FORT WORTH

As an undercover Fort Worth officer who was shot in the head early Friday by a suspected robber remained in critical condition, Fort Worth police released the name of the man suspected of shooting him.

Dacion Steptoe was identified as the man killed on the scene by police, Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald told reporters during a noontime press conference.

Fitzgerald also identified a second suspect, Samuel Mayfield, who was arrested shortly after the shooting.

The identity of the third suspect, initially described as a woman, has not been released. Fitzgerald said the suspect is, in fact, a man and was still being interviewed early Friday afternoon.

Fort Worth Police Officer Garrett Hull Has Died 24 Hours After Being Shot In The Head
September 15, 2018 at 12:05 am

FORT WORTH, TX (CBSDFW.COM) — Undercover Fort Worth Police Officer Garrett Hull who was shot just after midnight Friday outside the Los Vaqueros bar in the 400 block of Biddison Street has died.

Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald along with Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price and several members of the Fort Worth Police Department announced the news just after midnight Saturday morning — just about 24 hours after Hull was shot during a confrontation with a group of armed robbery suspects.

“I regret that I have to speak to you all this evening,” began Fitzgerald. “I am even more dismayed by the fact that I have to announce that at 21:40 hours Police Officer Garrett Hull passed away. We’ve lost a true hero; someone who has dedicated more than one tour of service to this great city and was senselessly killed by three known criminals — two of which are in custody now.”

According to police, officers had a group of suspects under surveillance early Friday morning at the bar when the suspects actually committed a robbery.
