At least one arsonist set two gay pride flags on fire in front of a Harlem bar just before the start of Pride Month, police said — an act Gov. Cuomo condemned.

Cops were called at around 12:20 a.m. Friday to Alibi Lounge on West 139th Street near Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., where two rainbow flags were set ablaze, police said Saturday. By the time officers arrived the flames were extinguished by the rain, and no one was hurt.

The arsonist remained at large, and cops are investigating the crime as a possible bias incident.

“Some a–hole set our rainbow flags on fire!” the bar tweeted. “It’s a hate crime!”

Cuomo blasted the brazen act.

“I am disgusted by the burning of a Pride flag outside an LGBTQ bar in Harlem early yesterday morning,” the governor said in a Saturday tweet.

“There is no place for hate in New York. Rather than divide New Yorkers, this despicable act will only strengthen our commitment to tolerance, equality and justice for every individual,” he added.

Patrons agreed with Cuomo.

“Why do people have to do these things? Can’t we just get along with each other instead of burning each other’s flags?” lamented Vincent DePaula, of the Upper East Side.

The flags were intended to celebrate Pride Month — which culminates June 30 with the WorldPride event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

Meanwhile, Rhode Island Bishop Thomas Tobin urged the faithful to shun Pride Month celebrations.

“A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ ‘Pride Month’ events held in June,” he tweeted Saturday.

“They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children.”

But another Catholic priest, New York Jesuit James Martin, who has called for love and compassion for gay people, shared a completely different perspective.

“To all my many #LGBTQ friends, Catholic and otherwise: Happy #PrideMonth,” he tweeted. “Be proud of your God-given dignity, of the gifts God has given you, of your place in the world, and of your many contributions to the church. For you are ‘wonderfully made’ by God (Ps 139). #PrideMonth2019.”

Video shows arsonist setting fire to Harlem bar’s gay pride flags

Newly released video shows the moment an arsonist lit gay pride flags on fire outside a Harlem bar.

The firebug is seen in the footage around 12:15 a.m. Friday taking what appears to be a lighter to one of the rainbow flags displayed in front of Alibi Lounge on 7th Avenue in Harlem, police said Wednesday.

The man held the flame to the flag and watched as it caught fire before pulling away and moving to the second one before walking away, according to the surveillance video.

The flames were quickly doused by the rain and no one was injured.

“Some asshole set our rainbow flags on fire! It’s a hate crime! #pride #rainbowflag #LGBTQoftwitter #lgbtcommunity,” reads a post on the bar’s Twitter account.

Alibi Lounge is the “[f]irst and only LGBTQ establishment located in Harlem, New York City,” according to the watering hole’s Twitter page.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo also spoke out, directing New York State Police to aid the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force in investigating what he called “a despicable and cowardly act made worse by the fact that it happened on the eve of Pride month.”

Cops are still looking for the man, who was wearing a patterned shirt, jeans and sneakers.

A hateful jerk set fire to a gay pride flag hanging outside a Harlem bar early Monday — a month after two of the rainbow-colored emblems were torched at the same nightspot, according to police.

The flag went up in smoke at around 12:45 a.m. outside of Alibi Lounge on West 139th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard, around the same time the previous flag-burner struck on May 31, cops said.

Alexi Minko, the owner of the lounge, said he was “petrified” that it had happened again.

“It seems surreal. I think, for about 10 seconds, I just stood there petrified and shocked. I thought it was a joke — it can’t be real,” he said.“I have no words.”

After the first incident, he thought the homophobic haters had learned “a lesson” that there’s “no place for hate anywhere, especially in Harlem.”

“We really thought that it was over,” Minko said. “It is difficult to think it would happen again so soon, or happen again period.”

He said the most recently torched flag was given to the bar by an anonymous donor.

On Monday morning, Gov. Andrew Cuomo demanded the arson be investigated as a hate crime, saying New York has “zero tolerance for this despicable behavior.”

“I am appalled by the burning of yet another pride flag outside an LGBTQ bar in Harlem. This act of hate is repugnant to our values of equality and inclusion, and we will not stand by and allow these cowardly acts to continue in New York,” he said in a press release.

“I am once again directing the State Police Hate Crimes Unit to assist the NYPD with its investigation and hold those responsible accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.

Neighbors were also stunned by the flag burning.”Where is all the hate coming from?” said Vy Higginsen, a playwright who lives nearby. “It’s concerning and I don’t like it.”

A 23-year-old resident who lives above the bar added, “It’s scary…I’ve never felt unwelcome as a queer [person] in the neighborhood.”

Police still don’t know if the latest arsonist is connected to the previous incident.

Cops said they are investigating it as a possible bias crime.

The NYPD is still searching for the first arsonist and has released footage of a man setting it on fire.

Cops release footage of man torching Harlem gay pride flag
By Kenneth Garger
July 8, 2019 | 9:58pm | Updated July 8, 2019 | 10:19pm

New footage released by cops Monday night shows a man torching a gay pride flag outside a Harlem bar early Monday — the second time in less than two months the nightspot’s rainbow-colored emblems were set ablaze.

The surveillance video shows the suspect sitting on a stoop at about 12:25 a.m. while using a lighter to burn the flag outside of Alibi Lounge on West 139th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard.

Once the flag is on fire, the arsonist stands up and calmly walks away, the footage shows.

The bar’s gay pride flag was last burned just after midnight on May 31.

No arrests have been made in the first incident, and cops are unsure if the two arsons are connected.

Police said they are investigating Monday’s incident as a possible hate crime.

The latest burning left Alibi Lounge owner Alexi Minko in shock.

“It seems surreal. I think, for about 10 seconds, I just stood there petrified and shocked. I thought it was a joke — it can’t be real,” said Minko. “I have no words.”

“We really thought that it was over,” he added. “It is difficult to think it would happen again so soon, or happen again period.”

Minko said the new flag was donated to the bar anonymously.

NYPD arrests man accused of setting pride flags on fire
By Tina Moore and Tamar Lapin
July 9, 2019 | 5:56pm

The hateful firebug who allegedly torched three gay pride flags in two separate incidents outside a Harlem bar was arrested on Tuesday, the NYPD said.

Tyresse Singleton, 20, was nabbed on multiple counts of criminal mischief, hate crimes and arson, police said.

Chief of Detectives Dermot F. Shea said calls to the NYPD tipline and the work of the NYPD Hate Crimes Task force “led to the identification and apprehension of the individual who burned the pride flag.”

Two of the rainbow-colored emblems were set on fire May 31, at the start of Pride Month, outside Alibi Lounge on West 139th Street near Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.

The flag-burner struck again early Monday outside the same watering hole.

Both incidents were caught on surveillance footage.

Bigot tells cops he burned bar’s pride flags because he hates gays
By Reuven Fenton and Laura Italiano
July 11, 2019 | 1:59pm

He didn’t give an “Alibi –” he just hates gays.

The man accused of setting fire to two gay pride flags outside Harlem’s “Alibi Lounge” — and then returning a month later to burn a third, replacement flag — admitted to cops that he’s not just a firebug, but a real bigot , court papers allege.

Arrested Tuesday in the caught-on-video predawn fires, Tyresse Singleton, 20, now must face felony charges of arson and criminal mischief as a hate crime.

Singleton ‘fessed up to investigators that he twice targeted the Seventh Avenue gay bar, first on May 31, when he lit up two LGBT flags hanging on a pole outside, and then again July 8, when he set fire to another flag hanging in the same spot.

Once in custody, Singleton told an NYPD Bias Incident Investigations detective that it was him.

“He stated in substance that he was responsible for burning the flags, and that his actions were motivated by bias and animus against the LGBT community,” the criminal complaint against Singleton says.

NYPD Chief Dermot Shea, meanwhile, thanked Hate Crime investigators and civilian tipsters — including some who reached out to @NYPDTips — for clinching the collar.

Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Laurie Peterson ordered Singleton set free with no bail late Wednesday night, despite prosecutors’ request that he be held on a $25,000 bond.

He’s due back in court on July 31, when he may learn if a grand jury has indicted him.
