SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8/CNS) - Two men were shot, one fatally, during a late night altercation with two other men at the Horton Plaza shopping mall downtown, according to San Diego police homicide detectives.

Officers were dispatched at 11:46 p.m. Saturday to the top floor of the mall where they found two men had been shot, according to Lt. Mike Holden.

"The first victim sustained several gunshot wounds to his chest and was transported to UCSD [Medical Center]. Despite life saving measures, the male was pronounced deceased at the hospital," Holden said. "The second victim sustained a minor gunshot wound to his leg and will survive his injury."

The incident took place outside Mad House Comedy Club. The club's Facebook page shared a post at 1:18 a.m. Sunday that read:

Incident at the Mad House tonight. All our staff and performers are OK. More info to come.

The club also posted that it would be closed Sunday night and offered refunds for the cancelled show.

A show was getting ready to wrap up at at the club when the shots were fired.

Both victims have been identified and are related to each other, but police did not release their names. The deceased victim was a 43-year old white man who lived in San Diego.

The second victim is a 29-year old white man who lives in Riverside,
Holden said.

A witness told News 8 she heard what sounded like someone dropping a glass on the floor.

Then people started screaming to get down.

She says customers ducked under tables as others rushed to lock the door.

They eventually ran out through an emergency exit.

"During the preliminary investigation, detectives learned that for an unknown reason both victims were confronted by two black males," Holden said. "During the confrontation, one of the black males shot both victims."

The two suspects ran north through Horton Plaza and got away.

  • Police release descriptions of suspects in Horton Plaza shooting
James Celani, 43, and his cousin had just left a show at the Mad House Comedy Club when they were approached by two men about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, San Diego police Lt. Mike Holden said. Moments later and seemingly without provocation, one of the men opened fire, Holden said. Both assailants were described as black, in their mid- to late-20s and between 5 feet 6 inches and 6 feet 3 inches tall. The shooter had a thin build and was last seen wearing a red T-shirt and jeans. His companion had a medium build and was wearing dark clothing, witnesses said. There is also no evidence to suggest the victims and the suspects knew each other, Holden said.
