Man Fatally Shot In Pharmacy Parking Lot

Police: First Shooting Occurs In Rite Aid Parking Lot

POSTED: 3:25 pm EDT June 4, 2007
UPDATED: 9:02 pm EDT June 4, 2007

PHILADELPHIA -- Less than two hours after a man was shot to death outside a pharmacy, dozens of gunshots rang out just a few blocks away.

The first shooting occurred at about 2:49 p.m. in the parking lot outside the Rite Aid Pharmacy at Broad Street and Wyoming Avenue in the city's Logan section, police said.

One police source told NBC 10's Mike Strug that the shooting wasn't a random homicide but looked like a hit, with the killer waiting for the victim.

Grainy surveillance video from a camera at the pharmacy -- as police described it -- appeared to show a blue pickup truck pulling up to the building just before 3 p.m. Several men got out and almost immediately at least one shot was fired, possibly by a man waiting along the store.

A single shell casing was left in the street where police believe the killer stood and fired.

A 29-year-old victim, struck in his left side, fell against a tan minivan parked along side the pickup. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital but later pronounced dead.

The shooter ran north on Belfield Avenue, police said.

The men in the pickup jumped back in and drove off. There's speculation they may have gone to get help, that the victim was too big for them to move, Strug reported. The pickup came back, but by then paramedics were at the scene and the men in the pickup apparently disappeared.

Police had one side of the Rite Aid roped off with caution tape as they continued to investigate.

The fatal shooting was Philadelphia's 169th of the year, police said.

The second shooting was reported just after 4:30 p.m. about three blocks from the Rite Aid.

Police placed at least 45 markers to show all of the shell casings on the 4400 block of North Cleveland Street in the city's Nicetown section.

The 18-year-old victim of that shooting was struck in the back, rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center and listed in stable condition.

Police took one person into custody near the Cleveland Street scene but were saying whether he was charged with any role in the shooting.

Detectives were also trying to determine whether there was any connection between the two shootings.

At least two other shootings were also reported in the city Monday afternoon and evening.

Two men were taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition after being struck by bullets at about 8 p.m. in the middle of the intersection at Sepviva and Letterly streets in the city's Kensington section.

And another man was reported shot at about 4 p.m. near 54th Street and Osage Avenue.

Rising Violence Threatens Long-Time Daycare

By Lauren Wilson

WILMINGTON, Del. - June 8, 2007 - A Delaware daycare in fear of its own neighborhood is threatening to pull up stakes, and its long roots in the community.

In the past month alone, there have been three incidents involving guns nearby.

The West Center City Early Learning Center has been at 6th and Madison for 30 years.

Families depend on the daycare, but members of the board told city council on Thursday that this center may be forced to shut down because there is so much violence in this neighborhood. There have been three incidents involving guns in the past month alone.

"A few weeks ago we actually had a shooting right across the street in the park. The cleaning crew that we had actually quit because their windows were shot out. Our executive director has been threatened," explained the center's chairman Jack Witzman.

This neighborhood is no stranger to violence, but residents say trouble usually occurs at night. It's the increase in daytime violence that has shaken the very foundation of the learning center attended by 105 local children.

"They could get some more protections around here. Walking police officers wouldn't hurt none," said Susie Terry.

82-year-old Terry hopes to see the return of cops walking the beat in her neighborhood, and so does Councilman Sammy Prado.

"I'll do everything I can not to let this place close. This community needs this place here," said Prado, who said he would ask the mayor and the chief of police for help.

Concerned residents like Ulysses James pledge to bring community programs to the area, despite the rising violence.

"I know what goes on around in this area, but I'm going to come into the area and try to stop some it, as much as I possibly can," said James.

A meeting between center and city officials is scheduled for next week.

Triple shooting in Philly--two dead, one almost

Kensington Triple Shooting Leaves Man, Woman Dead
Police: Two Suspects Under Arrest In Hunting Park

PHILADELPHIA -- Three people were shot, two of them fatally, Thursday afternoon in the Kensington section of Philadelphia, police said.

Police said a man and two women were shot at about 5:30 p.m. near Emerald and Somerset streets.

The man and one of the women were killed, and the other woman was rushed to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.

An NBC 10 crew was on the scene at Ninth Street and Roosevelt Boulevard in Hunting Park as police took two suspects in the shooting into custody.

A highway patrol sergeant driving south on Ninth Street spotted a white Pontiac Bonneville headed the other way as police dispatchers put out flash information in regard to a shooting.

Two men were taken into custody for questioning after they were identified by a witness from the shooting scene, police told NBC 10's Mike Strug.

Mother, Father Killed in Kensington Shooting

6 People Murdered in Philly in 24 Hours

By Erin O'Hearn

KENSINGTON - June 21, 2007 - An argument over where to sell drugs ended in deadly violence on Thursday night.

The shooting that followed the argument left two people dead and one in critical condition at Temple University Hospital.

Police have two men in custody for questioning. They were expected to charge at least one of those men with murder.

"I don't know how this happened. He just left the house and he held his son for the last time today," said Darryll Davis, the father of one victim.

His 20-year-old son left behind three young children after being gunned down near the corner of Somerset and Emerald in the city's Kensington section.

His father says Raheem Haines was getting ready to go to school to be a plumber.

29-year-old Dianna Patrick was also killed. Her sister, 28-year-old Jennifer Patrick, underwent surgery at Temple University Hospital for gunshot wounds.

"They're beautiful mothers. One's got six kids. The other has five. These kids need their mother," said Elsie Torrez.

Police say two men confronted Rhaheem, the Patrick sisters and another woman. They started arguing about selling drugs on a neighborhood corner. When the women told the men there were too many kids in the neighborhood to sell drugs, police say the men opened fire.

"We need to stop all this shooting you know what I mean. Put the guns down," said Davis.

Police were able to get a description of the suspects and pulled over two men on the 4400 block of North 9th street.

The triple shooting comes less than 24 hours after a shooting left three people dead on the 1600 block of North 6th street. Police have no suspects or a motive in that case.

"This is a terrible problem, but it is a problem all over the Commonwealth and all over the country," said Mayor Street.

Hours after this shooting, gunfire left another man dead in Southwest Philadelphia (READ MORE).

The murder toll has climbed to 194 for the year in Philadelphia.

Well on the way to another new record

Philly Murder Total Nears 200

Olney/Philadelphia -- Four people were shot, one fatally, at a crowded city playground on Tuesday evening, bringing Philadelphia's death toll close to 200 this year.

Two carloads of men drove across the grass to the basketball courts and started arguing with a group playing ball, police said. A fistfight broke out, followed by an exchange of gunfire.

Witnesses estimated that 60 to 70 people were at the playground in the city's Olney section at the time. Most took off running, they said.

"It might have been an argument over a girl. We're not sure," said Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, who went to the scene.

One of the three people wounded remained in critical condition late Tuesday, authorities said.

Two victims were found near the playground, while police found two more at Albert Einstein Medical Center, along with several men who had driven them there, officials said. They were being interviewed, but no arrests were immediately made.

Johnson, as he has before, blamed the city's continuing violence on lax gun laws, poverty, unemployment and witnesses who refuse to help police make arrests.

"If these legislators don't realize that we have a handgun problem here in the City of Philadelphia, then there's something wrong," Johnson said.

Playground Shooting Adds to Philly Murder Toll

Police: Olney Shooting 199th Homicide in Phila. this Year

by Erin O'Hearn, Bob Monek, and T.J. Alexander

OLNEY - June 27, 2007 - A crowded playground became a shooting ground on Tuesday night leaving one person dead and three others wounded. The murder brings the toll to 199 for the year.

Police say around 6:00 p.m., two carloads of niggers pulled up to the playground and started arguing with a group playing ball.

A fistfight, apparently over a girl, quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire.

The shooting happened next to the Olney Recreation Center at A and Spencer Streets. As many as 70 people, many of them niglets, may have been on the playground at the time, police said.

Two victims were found near the playground. An off-duty police officer passing by the scene was able to get tag numbers and police found two more victims at Albert Einstein Medical Center, along with several men who drove them there.

At least three men were taken into custody and being questioned. Police believe this shooting may be gang related.

The unidentified victim is officially the 199th person murdered in Philadelphia this year.

Police reported Wednesday that the murder toll is 199 as opposed to 201 due to their assessment that two of the killings were "justifiable". ???

On March 6th a group of men tried to rob a 16-year-old on East Johnston Street and the 16-year-old stabbed one of the robbers. The alleged robber was identified as Specer Edwards, who later died at the hospital.

Then on April 26th Jamar Jackson attempted to rob an 18-year-old. The teen fought back and Jackson's gun discharged during the struggle, killing Jackson. That was what was thought of as 133.

Philadelphia Police Coon Commissioner Sylvester Johnson blames lax gun laws, poverty, unemployment and witnesses who refuse to come forward and talk to police. He said neither he nor the mayor should be held responsible.
