Another Climate Prediction Fizzles: DC Climate Rally for Pope shrinks from expected 200,000 people to just ‘hundreds’
By: Marc Morano - Climate Depot

Washington DC: The hopes were so high back in August for a massive climate rally to support Pope Francis’ climate push. But reality has now sunk in .

Climate Prediction: August 25, 2015: WaPo: ‘For Pope Francis’s D.C. visit, environmental rally of up to 200K planned’ – Several environmental groups are planning a major climate rally that will draw hundreds of thousands to the National Mall on Sept. 24, the day Pope Francis speaks to Congress and is expected to address the public afterwards. The permit for the gathering — which will make the moral case for reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to global warming — is for 200,000 people. The Moral Action on Climate Network, along with the Earth Day Network, League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club and other groups, have timed the rally on the Mall the same day of the pope’s speech.

Reality: September 24, 2015: ‘Pope’s Visit To D.C. Inspires Hundreds To Rally For Climate’ Rally – ‘On Thursday morning — as Pope Francis prepared to make history by addressing Congress — hundreds of activists gathered on the National Mall. Holding signs, petitioning for signatures, and offering spirited remarks to an expectant crowd, the activists represented a spectrum of causes and religious denominations, from young evangelicals to Black Lives Matter leaders.’

Greenpeace seemed to confirm the small turnout for the climate rally, tweeting out today:

Amazing crowd! The Pope has left but the climate rally continues.

Cuomo paid state workers to fill seats at climate change event
By Michael Gartland

Andrew Cuomo, along with Al Gore, spoke about climate change at Columbia University last week. The speech was full of state employees, who were paid full wages to be there.

Gov. Cuomo wasn’t taking any chances that there might be empty seats at a speech he delivered last week on climate change — so state workers were summoned on the taxpayer dime to fill the audience, The Post has learned.

The workers said they left their jobs in the middle of the day Thursday and were paid their full salaries to hear Cuomo at Columbia University announce the state was joining a global effort to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

“I’d rather be at the park,” said one of the workers, who is employed by the state’s Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and who has no connection to climate issues.

He explained that he went because his boss “asked me to make some time available in my schedule.”

The worker confessed that he didn’t know what the event was about before he agreed to go.

He said attendance is not required, but is viewed favorably , and that the practice is common throughout state government to support Cuomo.

“They often ask,” he said, referring to supervisors. “We get e-mails, and they’ll ask us if we want to go.”

The worker said he would not have volunteered if he were not getting paid his regular salary. “It better be on the clock,” he said.

The 2:30 p.m. event, which lasted about an hour and included speeches from former Vice President Al Gore as well as Columbia’s President Lee Bollinger, focused on Cuomo’s plan to have state agencies work with other states and cities worldwide to reduce carbon emissions.

A state Department of Health worker told The Post that supervisors offered employees the *option of attending the event *“instead of working.”

If they watched Cuomo, they could go home afterward instead of returning to work, the employee said.

He called the practice “AstroTurfing” — an attempt to fabricate grass-roots support.

“Public employees take an oath that they won’t use their position for their personal advantage,” the employee said. “How can you expect any state workers to take it seriously when the boss isn’t leading by example?”

Good-government advocates questioned why state workers were being paid to attend an event designed to bolster an elected official’s credentials.

“It’s a questionable use of state resources,” said Dick Dadey, executive director of Citizens Union.

A Cuomo spokesman acknowledged that state workers attended the Columbia event, but insisted that was proper.

“A handful of staff from relevant state agencies had the opportunity to attend this important announcement, which impacted their work. They were a small number of the more than 500 people who attended the event,” said spokesman Frank Sobrino.

He said about 20 workers went from four agencies, including Environmental Conservation and the state Energy Research and Development office and decisions on whom to send were made “at the agency level.”

He also said that climate issues are “directly relevant” to health employees and are “an enormously important issue” to parks workers after Hurricane Sandy.

Cuomo takes heat for having state workers attend his climate change address
By Michael Gartland
October 19, 2015 | 5:28am

Democrats and Republicans slammed Gov. Cuomo for encouraging state employees to forego their daily, taxpayer-funded duties to attend a recent policy address he made on climate change.

The bipartisan attacks came on the heels of an exclusive Post report revealing how supervisors from at least four state agencies gave employees the choice between watching Cuomo speak at Columbia University and working.

“I’m confident that there are many, many New Yorkers who feel passionately about climate change and the environment who would not have needed to be paid with our tax dollars to attend,” said Councilman Brad Lander, a Democrat.

“The governor should have picked a smaller room,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.

Republicans offered harsher rebukes.

“It’s smoke and mirrors — just another dog and pony show,” said Councilman Eric Ulrich, a Queens Republican.

State GOP Chairman Ed Cox said the move demonstrated desperation.

“It’s a pathetic state of affairs when as governor you have to pay people to come to your event,” Cox said. “This is a gross misuse of taxpayer dollars, and he should reimburse the state for the expense from his campaign account.”

A Cuomo spokesman said it’s “entirely appropriate to invite a small number of representatives and give them the opportunity to attend an event impacting their work.”

MELTDOWN MYTH: Antarctic ice growing is just the first EVIDENCE global warming is NOT REAL
Antarctica is growing not shrinking, the latest satellite records show.
By James Delingpole COMMENT
PUBLISHED: 07:58, Thu, Nov 5, 2015 | UPDATED: 15:05, Thu, Nov 5, 2015

You might think this would be great news for all those scientists who have been warning us over the last few years about the impending horrors of “man-made global warming” but in fact they are not happy about it, not one bit.

Here for example is Dr Jay Zwally, the lead author of this week’s surprising Nasa study that confirms that the Antarctic is gaining far more ice than it is losing.

“I know some of the climate deniers will jump on this and say this means we don’t have to worry as much as some people have been making out. It should not take away from the concern about climate warming.”

Does that sound to you like a neutral scientific opinion? Do you sense any relief at the good news that the climate apocalypse of melting ice caps and rising sea levels may not be quite so imminent after all? No, me neither.

Rather it reminds me of the disappointment of Harold Camping, the notorious American evangelist who solemnly warned his listeners that the world was going to end on September 6, 1994.

When that didn’t happen he decided Judgment Day had been postponed to May 21, 2011, and subsequently to October 21 of the same year. Still the world survived and Camping (and the poor fools who believed him) was left with egg all over his face.

Just like all those climate doomsayers who have been making such a big deal of our supposedly disappearing polar ice caps. If the climate alarmists weren’t such a devious bunch I would almost feel sorry for them.

But they are dishonest and they don’t play fair. Not so long ago some supposed climate expert reported me to Australia’s press complaints commission because I’d dared to suggest that the Antarctic ice mass was increasing not decreasing.

As it turns out I was right but this angry alarmist was not going to let a few facts get in the way of his doomsday narrative.

That is because along with the polar bears, the glaciers, the drowning Pacific islands, the rising sea levels and so on the Antarctic has become one of the main characters in the great global warming scare story.

The supposedly disappearing ice was part of the regular drip-drip-drip of bad news that the alarmists so desperately need in order to persuade the public that “climate change” is real and urgent and that only the most radical solutions can save us from its horrors.

But the Antarctic has always been a bit of a problem for the alarmists. Unlike with the floating ice caps around the North Pole, which really did look for a time like they were vanishing (though they have since staged a recovery), the evidence for Antarctic ice loss has never been strong.

That is because the area is so vast and inhospitable it is hard to be sure what is really going on there. Sure there is the odd lonely outpost like the British Antarctic Survey’s Halley VI Research Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf.

But that still leaves most of the continent’s 5,500,000 square miles (about a third bigger than the whole of Europe) unexplored – and with temperatures that can drop as low as -89.6C, with an average winter temperature of around -49C this is clearly not the kind of place where you could ever maintain a comprehensive network of weather stations.

All the scare stories you have ever read about the Antarctic concern one of the few relatively accessible parts: the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

This has indeed been breaking off in large chunks, which alarmist scientists and newspapers have claimed makes it a dread harbinger of man-made global warming.

Or at least they did until last year when the University of Texas discovered that the more likely cause of this melt, which has been going on for 20,000 years by the way, was the geothermal heat from all the volcanoes sitting underneath it.

That is by no means the only setback alarmist scientists have experienced there recently. In the Christmas of 2013 an Australian climate change expedition came unstuck when their research ship was trapped in ice they had not been expecting because they believed so faithfully in “global warming”. This latest research from Nasa is a bigger blow to their cause.

And we know it is accurate because it uses altimetry data from satellites to gauge changes in the size of the Antarctic land mass.

What this shows is that between 1992 and 2001 the ice sheet gained 112billion tons of ice per year. This rate slowed between 2003 and 2008 but still the ice sheet was gaining 82billion tons a year.

The parts breaking off are the only bits accessible to man

Not only that but according to the same study, it has led to a reduction in the sea level rise of about 0.23mm a year. Does that sound to you like a continent shrinking because of global warming? Of course not.

You don’t need to be a scientist to understand the bleeding obvious. In fact all you need to do is read this newspaper, which has been arguing as much for years.

Scientists such as Zwally may refer to us as “climate deniers” but who are the real deniers here: those who look at the hard evidence or those who want to go on scaremongering regardless of what the data shows?

Little Support for Punishing Global Warming Foes
Thursday, November 12, 2015

Global warming advocates are calling for the prosecution of groups who disagree with them, and New York State has taken it a step further by investigating Exxon Mobil for refusing to play ball with the popular scientific theory.

But 68% of Likely U.S. Voters oppose the government investigating and prosecuting scientists and others including major corporations who question global warming. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 17% favor such prosecutions. Fifteen percent (15%) are undecided.

Just over one-in-four Democrats (27%), however, favor prosecuting those who don’t agree with global warming. Only 11% of Republicans and 12% of voters not affiliated with either major party agree.

After all, just 24% of all voters believe the scientific debate about global warming is over, although that’s up from 20% in July of last year. Unchanged is the 63% who say that debate is not done yet. Thirteen percent (13%) are not sure.

Among voters who believe scientists have made up their minds about global warming, one-in-four (24%) favor prosecuting those who question that theory, but 64% are opposed.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on November 9-10, 2015 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Eighty-seven percent (87%) of voters describe their constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech as Very Important.

But only 20% of Americans think they have true freedom of speech today. Seventy-three percent (73%) think instead that Americans have to be careful not to say something politically incorrect to avoid getting in trouble.

Most voters across nearly all demographic categories agree that the scientific debate about global warming is not over.

Most also oppose prosecuting those who don’t agree that global warming is real, although voters under 40 are more supportive of prosecution that their elders are.

A voter’s level of education seems to make little difference generally speaking to his or her responses to these questions.

Among voters who Strongly Approve of the job President Obama is doing, 29% favor prosecuting those who disagree with global warming. Eighty-one percent (81%) of those who Strongly Disapprove of the president’s job performance oppose such prosecutions.

The number of voters who consider global warming a serious problem has ranged from 53% to 66% in regular surveys for the past six years.

But 41% say they are willing to pay nothing more in higher taxes and utility costs annually to generate cleaner energy and fight global warming. Another 24% are willing to spend only $100 more per year.

Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters believe the president's new plan to limit greenhouse gas emissions from coal-burning power plants will increase energy costs in the United States, and only 33% think it will do a lot to fight global warming.

Citing global warming concerns, the president last week rejected the building of the Keystone XL pipeline from western Canada to Texas despite bipartisan congressional support for the project. Most voters have supported building the Keystone pipeline in surveys since 2011, saying it would be good for the economy.

When given a choice, 63% say creating jobs is more important than taking steps to try to stop global warming, consistent with regular surveying for over two years now.
