PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia Police found a dismembered body inside a trash bag in a U-Haul truck while responding to a burglary call in the Somerton section of the city. Police found the body in the rear of the truck on the 1000 block of Sanibel Street on Thursday morning.

Philadelphia Police say two people are now in custody, but the disturbing discovery has left neighbors with more questions than answers.

“I’m just in disbelief right now,” neighbor Tiffany McClean said.

Neighbors in Somerton are in shock after police found someone’s dismembered remains inside a trash bag in the back of a U-Haul.

According to sources, Philadelphia Police found body parts inside a dumpster at Kelvin Avenue and Proctor Road on Thursday night. Sources say the body parts are connected to the Somerton incident.

“Unbelievable,” one neighbor said. “Totally unbelievable.”

“There’s no cause for it,” McClean said. “That’s just awful.”

Police were initially called for a report of a burglary happening at a home on Sanibel Street in Somerton, just after 9 a.m. Thursday.

“When the officers arrive, they see a U-Haul truck pulling away from the property,” Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp said.

So, officers put their lights on to stop the U-Haul about a block away.

“As soon as it pulled over, the driver’s side door opened up, the driver came out with his hands up and said, ‘I didn’t do it, it wasn’t me. I was paid to move a body,’” Gripp said.

Eyewitness News asked police if the passenger admitted to anything.

“The passenger did not say anything,” Gripp said.

Officers then searched the U-Haul, finding a trash bag with the dismembered body.

“Quite frankly, it’s disgusting, it’s disturbing,” Gripp said.

Police haven’t yet identified the victim or said how the person died, but detectives did reveal a weapon was found in the truck.

Now, police plan to search inside the home after they get a warrant.

Meantime, neighbors say the last time they saw the man who lived there was a week ago.

Police also did not identify the driver and passenger in custody.

Man charged after human remains discovered in U-Haul in Northeast Philadelphia

2/13/2021

PHILADELPHIA - A man is facing charges after human remains were found in a U-Haul Thursday morning in Northeast Philadelphia, according to prosecutors.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office told FOX 29 Taray Herring faces burglary, tampering with evidence, abuse of corpse, and related charges.

Less than 24 hours after police found human remains inside a trash bag in the back of a U-Haul during a traffic stop, crime scene investigators and animal protection officers were at a home on Sanibel Street Friday morning.

ACCT Philly says they assisted police where an owner is no longer able to care for their animals anymore. They took 63 exotic animals from the home.

"Parrots, tortoises and bearded dragons," Sarah Barnett with ACCT Philly said. "Generally speaking they seemed in good health."

Public records and neighbors on Sanibel Street identified the man who lived in the home as 70-year-old Peter Gerold. Neighbors pointed to his company website where he is listed as a licensed massage therapist with Kneading You Therapy. They say he was kind and quick to help anymore.

Police sources say they recovered remains from the garage along with items to compare for DNA.

Late Thursday, investigators found more remains and other evidence in a dumpster behind a shopping center along Bustleton Avenue.

Despite numerous cameras at Gerold's home, sources say the device that stores surveillance videos was taken from the home.

A cause of death is still pending.

Philadelphia Man Taray Herring Charged In Connection To Dismembered Body Found In U-Haul In Somerton: Police
By CBS3 Staff
February 14, 2021 at 6:30 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A man has been charged with burglary and abuse of a corpse in connection with the case of dismembered remains found in a U-Haul truck in Somerton, Philadelphia Police said.

Taray Herring, 47, is being held without bail, according to police.

Homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the death in Somerton.

Police found the dismembered remains inside a Sanibel Street home on Thursday. Police said Thursday two people were taken into custody but on Sunday confirmed the driver of the U-Haul was not charged.

Philadelphia Police executed a search warrant Friday at his home, finding dozens of animals inside. Authorities with ACCT Philly removed birdcage after birdcage, collecting more than 30 parrots, plus other animals found inside.

Police still have not yet identified the person found dismembered and stuffed in a trash bag in the U-Haul on Thursday near the home, but an official with ACCT Philly said the home where all of the birds were removed is of the individual found.

Neighbors identified the homeowner as Peter Gerold. His website shows he ran a massage therapy business from the home.

Police said detectives found additional remains in a dumpster about a half-mile from the home.

Philadelphia Man Taray Herring Charged In Connection To Dismembered Body Found In U-Haul In Somerton: Police
By CBS3 Staff
February 14, 2021 at 11:09 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A man has been charged with burglary and abuse of a corpse in connection with the case of dismembered remains found in a U-Haul truck in Somerton, Philadelphia Police said. Taray Herring, 47, is being held without bail, according to police.

There’s been a break in the case of a dismembered body found in a trash bag in the back of U-Haul truck in Philadelphia’s Somerton section on Thursday. The details of the case are unsettling to neighbors alike.

“It sounds like something out of a movie or something,” neighbor Tiffany McLean said. “I can’t really, I’m still trying to process it myself.”

Philadelphia Police confirm that Herring was arrested and arraigned on Saturday. He faces several charges including burglary and abuse of corpse.

Officers saw the U-Haul leave a home on the 1000 block of Sanibel Street after a neighbor called 911 to report a possible burglary.

Herring was the passenger in the U-Haul when officers pulled it over just after 9 a.m. Thursday.

“Driver side door opened up, driver came out with his hands up and said, I didn’t do it, it wasn’t me. I was paid to move a body,” Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp said.

Investigators questioned and released the driver.

Though police are still not identifying the victim, property records and neighbors identify Peter Gerold as the longtime homeowner. They say he ran a massage therapy business out of the home.

“We’re working under the idea that that individual lived in that house, by himself, so we’re assuming that that is the individual,” Gripp said.

Sources confirm that officers discovered additional body parts Thursday in a dumpster just a few blocks from the home at Kelvin Avenue and Proctor Road.

On Friday, police, executing a search warrant, and ACCT Philly removed more than 30 parrots and other animals from Gerold’s property.

Neighbors say they hadn’t seen him in about a week and feared that someone took advantage of kind nature.

“He helped out a lot of people, so you know it was somebody that he probably helped out at one point that came back and did this to him,” one neighbor said.

At this point, it is unclear if and how Herring and the victim knew each other.

Herring’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 1.
