Dallas Officer Mitchell Penton Killed By Driver Suspected Of Intoxication, Police Say February 13, 2021 at 4:45 pm DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A Dallas officer has died after he was hit by a suspected intoxicated driver early Saturday morning, police said. Officials identified the officer as Mitchell Penton, who joined the department in February 2019. Police said the incident happened at around 1:45 a.m. as Penton was blocking traffic for a crash in a northbound lanes of North Central Expressway at Walnut Hill Lane. ![]() Penton was standing outside his vehicle, which had its emergency lights on, when he was hit by a 32-year-old driver who was going at a high rate of speed, police said. The officer was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle was also taken to a hospital for injuries to her chest and a laceration on her face, police said. Police said the driver, later identified as Phillip Mabry, was arrested for intoxication manslaughter on a police officer and intoxication assault for the passenger that was in his vehicle. Man charged with intoxication manslaughter for crash that killed Dallas PD officer ![]() DALLAS - A 32-year-old man has been charged for a crash that resulted in the death of a Dallas PD officer who was working another crash scene early Saturday morning. The Dallas Police Department is mourning the death of officer Mitchell Penton. Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said Penton was working a crash along northbound Highway 75, near Walnut Hill Lane in North Dallas, just after 1 a.m. As officers were securing the scene, police said a black Kia Forte being driven by suspected drunken driver, Phillip Mabry, drove through the road flares at a high rate of speed and struck the police vehicle. |
