South Daytona police seeking two persons of interest in murder case
Last Modified: Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at 1:12 p.m.

Two men who were near the scene where a South Daytona man was murdered and where his car was abandoned may have information in the unsolved case
, police said Wednesday.

The men are considered persons of interest in the killing of Donald Dean Clark, who was found shot to death just after 6 a.m. in the laundry room of his apartment complex on June 2.

Clark's 2011, pearl-white Mitsubishi Gallant was also stolen after he was shot, said South Daytona Acting Police Chief Ron Wright. However, the car was recovered three days later in the parking lot of an apartment building on Palmetto Avenue in Daytona Beach.

Based on information from a tenant of that building, the car had been left there the same day the 67-year-old Clark was shot, police said.

Surveillance video caught one of the men at a Kangaroo convenience store at 601 Bevill Rd. at about the same time Clark was found, Wright said. The store is close to the laundry room where Clark's body was discovered by another resident.

The second man was spotted walking westbound on Shady Place in Daytona Beach close to where Clark's car was abandoned, Wight said.

Investigators also have not received any information from the public regarding a pricey, charcoal-colored men's Trek mountain bike that was found near the laundry room, Wright said. Police questioned other residents of the Golfview Aaprtments on Northern Road and none had ever seen the bicycle on the premises.

Because of that, investigators are more convinced then ever that the mysterious, $800 bicycle is linked to the murder, Wright said.

Clark's wallet - which was found inside the car - as well as DNA evidence and fingerprints found in the Mitsubishi, have been sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's lab in Orlando, Wright said.

Investigators are waiting to hear whether DNA other than Clark's was gleaned from the evidence.

Cousins, grandmother arrested in South Daytona laundry room slaying
Donald Clark found shot to death in June 2013

4/29/14

SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. -

Police on Tuesday said three family members, two of whom are known gang members, were arrested in the slaying of a retired car salesman who was shot to death in his South Daytona apartment laundry room.

The body of Donald Clark, 67, was found June 2, 2013
, at the Golfview Apartments.

Renard Miller and Emmanuel Butler, who are cousins, were arrested on first-degree murder charges. Butler was 17 years old at the time of the shooting.

Their grandmother, Patricia Horton, was arrested on charges of perjury after, police said, she lied to officers to protect her family.

Clark’s 2011 Mitsubishi Gallant was stolen after the shooting and recovered three days later in the parking lot of an apartment building on Palmetto Avenue in Daytona Beach, police said.

"These are the guys breaking into your cars. They go around stealing cars, running from the police all over the east Volusia area," said the lead investigator, adding that the pair belongs to the 819 Southside gang.

"Mr. Clark was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They saw him and targeted him for his car," the investigator said.

Car Salesman Murderer Sentenced
May 1, 2019

DeLand, FL – A 23-year-old Holly Hill man, a former gang member who has been in jail since August 2013 for a murder he committed, now knows his sentence. Emmanuel Butler will be serving life in prison.

Judge Raul Zambrano sentenced Butler to life for murder and 50 years for armed robbery. Because Butler was a juvenile at the time of the crime he is entitled to a review of the sentence after serving 25 years in prison.

Butler was arrested for murder for gunning down retired car salesman 67-year-old Donald Clark as he was doing laundry at the Golfview Apartments, just off Beville Road, on June 2, 2013.

In 2016, a jury found Butler guilty of first degree premeditated murder and first degree felony murder and robbery with a firearm. An issue with a witness caused a sentencing delay. Butler was only 17 at the time of the crime so he was sentenced to life in prison rather than the death penalty.

Butler’s cousin was convicted of being an accessory after the fact. His grandmother was charged with a misdemeanor, false report of a crime, after refusing to tell investigators what she knew about the case.
