Kevin Lamont Whiting, 30, beat woman and dragged her into field

WILMINGTON -- A man who assaulted and threatened to rape a woman near the Wilmington marina has been convicted.

On Wednesday a New Hanover County jury found Kevin Lamont Whiting, 30, guilty of first-degree kidnapping, assault inflicting physical injury by strangulation and habitual misdemeanor assault. Whiting was acquitted of attempted first-degree forcible rape, according to a news release from the New Hanover County District Attorney’s office.

Superior Court Judge John Nobles sentenced Whiting to between 13 years and 16-and-three-quarters years in prison.

On Dec. 1, 2017, a woman visiting Wilmington from out-of-state left her downtown hotel for a walk near the marina. According to the release, Whiting followed the woman, beat her, strangled her to unconsciousness and dragged her to a nearby field.

The release states that when the woman regained consciousness, Whiting told her that he was going to have sex with her.

“She used her quick thinking to dissuade the defendant from furthering his assault on her,” the release states. “Another female on her way to work witnessed the bloodied victim and the defendant near the marina and called 911 on her behalf. The victim finally convinced her assailant to let her walk back to the hotel where she staying downtown.”

After the woman got back to her hotel, staff also helped call police.

An officer with the Wilmington Police Department began questioning people along the Riverwalk, and located a man matching the victim’s description of her attacker near the visitor’s center at Market and Water streets with a mark on his hand, according to the release.

The victim later identified the man, Whiting, as her attacker in a photo lineup, the release states.

The victim sustained injuries to her temple, nose, neck, shoulders, hip, and knee.

“She came back to Wilmington in order to testify because she felt that if she could help prevent any future attacks, there would be one positive outcome from this horrific act of violence,” the release states.

The Dec. 1, 2017 attack was not the first time a woman reported Whiting to the police.

In the weeks before the assault, the release states, several women reported to police that they had seen Whiting downtown and he had made them scared or uncomfortable. Jurors in Whiting’s trail hear about one incident in which Whiting masturbated while watching a woman reading in Bijou Park on Front Street, according to the release.
