A New Jersey school district is fighting to fire a tenured teacher accused of calling students the n-word in class, according to a report.

Bruce Bassetti was teaching seventh-grade science at Penns Grove Middle School in February when he allegedly flipped out, according to NJ.com, which obtained a statement of tenure charges against him.

“I’m not trying to deal with these n—-rs,” he said, according to the statement.

Bassetti was suspended after four students wrote statements confirming the allegedly racist outburst — but is still getting paid $67,492 a year because he is tenured, according to the site.

Last month, the Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District Board of Education voted to bring tenure charges against Bassetti and suspend him without pay for four months. The board also moved for his dismissal altogether.

“Racial slurs have no place in the workplace, and it is even more abhorrent to engage in such conduct around the student with whom you are charged with teaching,” the district said.

In a meeting with the assistant principal and principal, Bassetti denied using the racial slur. After asking for the names of the students who were accusing him, he allegedly said he “couldn’t have called him that because he is white,” referring to one of them, the charges said.

The assistant principal said Bassetti’s response was “offensive in its own merits” and ended the meeting. He asked the teacher to make a statement, which said he asked a student to bring a Chromebook to a desk.

He claimed the student replied, “Are you lazy, come get it yourself” and said he didn’t respond.

Local community activist Walter Hudson told NJ.com, “I will not be officially happy until Bruce Bassetti resigns.”

“It’s sad to say we still dealing with this type of behavior in our school system,” he added. “If he comes back, he would have created a hostile learning environment for our kids, and we do not want that around our kids.”

Local NAACP president Nelson Carney Jr. said his organization has been monitoring the case.

“Those types of words are unacceptable in this day and time ,” Carney said. “This should be yet another wake-up call that there is zero tolerance for discrimination in school, workplace, or anywhere.”

Neither Bassetti nor the union that represents him returned NJ.com’s request for comment.
