New Orleans woman attacks police, EMS tech, hospital nurse after grocery store arrest: NOPD

updated April 17, 2017 at 12:35 PM

A New Orleans East woman accused of threatening a grocery store customer with a knife after a checkout line dispute on Easter Sunday (April 16) was booked with additional allegations that she tried biting police, an EMS technician and a hospital nurse after being taken into custody.

New Orleans police said Maquelle Brown, 37, compounded her legal troubles with a violent reaction to her arrest at the Save-A-Lot grocery store at 1841 Almonaster Ave. in the 7th Ward.

According to arrest documents, Brown slipped out of handcuffs, damaged the interior of an NOPD cruiser and attempted to physically harm police, medical personnel and herself in a fit of rage over being taken into custody. The report gave no indication of whether Brown was suspected of being under the influence of controlled substances or suffers from mental illness.
