Mother Of Philadelphia Police Officer Found Stabbed To Death In Bathtub Of East Germantown Home

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The mother of a Philadelphia police officer was found stabbed to death inside her East Germantown home overnight. Police were called to the home on the 300 block of Mechanic Street, around 1:22 a.m. Wednesday, for a report of a person screaming.

Investigators say a family member found the 65-year-old woman unresponsive and covered in blood inside her bathtub. The victim had been stabbed multiple times. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the woman’s black 2014 Nissan Rogue was missing from the scene, with a Pennsylvania tag number LBT 7539. Police appear to have found the vehicle after it crashed during a police pursuit on the 4300 block of Sansom Street.

Police say arrests have been made but it’s not known if those arrests are in connection to the woman’s murder.

If you see the vehicle, do not approach it and call 911.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Philadelphia Police: 17-Year-Old Boy Named Suspect In Murder Of Foster Mother Renee Gilyard
By Matt Petrillo
January 16, 2020 at 10:30 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia police have named a 17-year-old boy as a suspect in the murder of his foster mother, 64-year-old Renee Gilyard of East Germantown. Police also believe the teen killer could be connected to the disappearance of another foster child.

“It’s clear to us that they’re connected,” Acting Philadelphia Police Commissioner Christine Coulter said.

Coulter said the 17-year-old boy who was taken into custody Wednesday in West Philadelphia after crashing his foster mother’s SUV, is facing a lot of questions in her death.

“I believe, at this point, he’s considered a suspect, not a person of interest,” Coulter said.

Gilyard was found stabbed several times on Wednesday. Her body was covered in blood in a bathtub in her East Germantown home.

Police say the murder weapon was left behind.

“I believe there was a knife at the scene,” Coulter said.

Police also say the 17-year-old foster son could be connected to two missing people — 20-year-old Jimmy Mao and 16-year-old Jacob Merritt-Richburg.

Right now, investigators are waiting for an autopsy report after human remains were found inside a black duffel bag on the 1000 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway. That victim had neck and hand wounds and police said he’s an Asian male.

“We have not gotten confirmation from the medical examiner’s office yet regarding the young man found in Cobb’s Creek, so we don’t have a positive identification and we don’t have a manner of death. So as soon as we have that, it’ll be easier to present a package to the district attorney with the hope of charging,” Coulter said.

Coulter says charges are likely to come down later today, but she wants to be extra careful considering the suspect is a teenager.

Philadelphia Police: Human Remains Found In Duffel Bag Short Distance Away From Where Missing 20-Year-Old Jimmy Mao Last Seen
By CBS3 Staff
January 15, 2020 at 10:32 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Homicide detectives say human remains have been found a short distance away from where missing 20-year-old Jimmy Mao was last seen. The remains were found inside a black duffel bag on the 1000 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway.

Police sources say the remains “have been there for a while.”

Investigators say there is one body on the scene.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small says the victim had neck and head wounds.

It appears to be an Asian male,” Small said. “Police believe, based on tattoos and other information, that they know who the body is, but at this time it has not been positively identified.”

Mao’s sister says she is holding out hope that he is still alive.

“My head is everywhere right now. I can’t talk,” Niki Mao said.

Niki and other family members spoke with homicide detectives Wednesday evening. She says the family is being asked to meet at the Medical Examiner’s Office Thursday morning to identify the body.

“Hopefully it’s not him. I’m just going to wait until tomorrow,” Niki said.

Philadelphia SVU put out a plea for the public’s help to locate Mao on Friday and again this morning. The family previously received a text demanding ransom.

Police say the last person to see Mao was the 17-year-old person of interest in the fatal stabbing of his foster mother, 64-year-old Renee Gilyard, whom sources tell CBS3 knew Mao through foster care placements.

“We did interview him and he could not shed further information about his whereabouts,” Philadelphia Police Capt. Mark Burgmann said.

The 17-year-old was picked up this morning after police identified him as a person of interest in the murder of his foster mother in East Germantown. Gilyard’s body was found in the bathtub inside her home.

“Two knife wounds to the left side of her neck,” Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith said.

Police would not reveal how they made the connection between the two cases.

Police also indicated they were searching for a second missing person identified as 16-year-old Jacob Merritt-Richburg. Investigators say Jacob was last seen Jan. 6. His family reported him missing this past Saturday.

“During our investigation, we also came across someone named Jacob Merritt Richburg, a 16-year-old from 1800 Vineyard Street,” Burgmann said. “We believe he is some type of acquaintance of Jimmy Mao and we believe he may be in possession of property that belonged to Jimmy Mao.”

Niki Mao says the 17-year-old person of interest and her brother lived at the same foster home on Angora Terrace.

2 Missing People Linked to Teen Tied to Deadly Stabbing
A 17-year-old is connected to three investigations including the stabbing death of his foster mother
By Rudy Chinchilla • Published January 15, 2020 • Updated at 2:49 am on January 16, 2020

UPDATE: Police discovered a dead body while searching for Mao. New details here.

Police believe a 17-year-old, considered a person of interest in the stabbing death of a 64-year-old East Germantown woman, may be connected to the disappearance of two people from Philadelphia.

Jimmy Mao, 20, was last seen Dec. 29 of last year and reported missing from the 5800 block of Angora Terrace four days later. On Jan. 7, Mao’s bother started receiving text messages demanding ransom payments, Philadelphia Police Special Victims Unit Capt. Mark Burgmann said.

As police investigated, they interviewed the 17-year-old, an acquaintance of Mao’s, and determined he was likely the last person to have seen him.

Detectives also wanted to interview another acquaintance of Mao's, 16-year-old Jacob Merritt-Richburg, from the 1800 block of Vineyard Street. Before that happened, Merritt-Richburg was reported missing by his family on Jan. 11, Burgmann said.

Burgmann said Merrit-Richburg was in possession of something that belonged to Mao but would not elaborate on what that was.

Jimmy Mao, 20, and Jacob Merritt-Richburg, 16

The 17-year-old, meanwhile, had been considered a missing and endangered person after police could not find him in the East Germantown home where his foster mother was stabbed to death Wednesday morning.

Renee Gilyard, the mother of a Philadelphia police officer, was found covered in blood with two stab wounds to the neck and defensive wounds, Homicide Capt. Jason Smith said. She had been fostering the 17-year-old for three days, Smith said.

Family members found her lifeless body shortly before 1:30 a.m. slumped over a bathtub in the home along the 300 block of Mechanic Street, Smith said. They had been trying to contact her the day prior but could not reach her, which prompted them to check her house.

Investigators did not find any signs of a break-in but did notice the 17-year-old and the victim’s black Nissan Rogue were not at the house, Smith said.

Police took the teen into custody after he crashed the SUV Wednesday morning while fleeing from police in West Philadelphia, Smith said. Three additional teens — a boy and two girls ranging in age from 14 to 17 years old — were in the vehicle.

Smith added that investigators “have reason to believe” that the teen is “possibly connected” to Mao and Merrit-Richburg.

All four people in the car were taken into Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash and are being questioned by detectives, Smith said.

The 17-year-old is considered a person of interest in the East Germantown slaying but has not been named yet a suspect or charged with a crime, the captain added.

The 17-year-old has not been charged with a crime so NBC10 is withholding his name.

17-Year-Old Xavier Johnson Charged In Murders Of 64-Year-Old Foster Mother Renee Gilyard, 20-Year-Old Jimmy Mao

[WHAT IS RACE OF MURDER SUSPECT?] - Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A 17-year-old boy was charged Thursday with the murders of his 64-year-old foster mother and a 20-year-old missing man. Philadelphia police say Xavier Johnson stabbed to death both Renee Gilyard, of East Germantown, and Jimmy Mao, of West Philadelphia, in separate incidents.

Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith said Xavier “brutally tortured and murdered” both of his victims.

“Robbery appears to be the motive for both incidents,” Smith said.

Police say when Xavier entered Gilyard’s home earlier this week, he was set on stealing money and taking her SUV. Police also revealed the suspect stole a PlayStation and money from Mao.

Gilyard was found stabbed to death early Wednesday morning inside her East Germantown home. Her body was found covered in blood in a bathtub.

Xavier was taken into custody Wednesday morning in West Philadelphia after crashing Gilyard’s SUV following a police chase.

Gilyard was Xavier’s foster mother for only three days before she was killed.

Acting Philadelphia Police Commissioner Christine Coulter said Gilyard was the mother of a Philadelphia police officer.

“To live through any death is a horrible experience, but to know you’re mother is murdered is a terrible thing,” Coulter said.

Police also confirmed Mao’s remains were found inside a black duffel bag on the 1000 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway, late Wednesday afternoon.

Mao suffered stab wounds to his face and neck. Smith says Xavier placed Mao’s remains inside a duffel bag and threw it down a hill in an attempt to conceal his death.

“We found a knife. We’re going to do an examination on the knife we recovered to determine whether it was the murder weapon, but there’s a good possibility that it is,” Smith said.

Smith added it’s possible it’s the same knife that was used in the stabbing death of Gilyard.

“It’s possible it’s the same knife because we know there were two knife wounds to Ms. Gilyard, when she was discovered. It’s also possible that it was a knife taken from her home,” Smith said.

Mao went missing in late December.

According to family members, Mao had just moved into a foster home on Angora Terrace with the suspect. Days after, police say Xavier stabbed Mao to death before disposing of his body less than a block away from the foster home.

Investigators are being tight-lipped over exactly how they connected Xavier to Mao’s murder.

“We developed information in our investigation,” Smith said. “I can’t be more specific than that. It would divulge too much.”

Smith added that missing 16-year-old Jacob Merritt-Richburg may have information in Mao’s homicide, but is not considered a suspect.

The city’s Department of Human Services says they are “heartbroken over the recent deaths” and are supporting the police in their investigation.

“We are saddened by the lives cut short — a foster parent whose commitment to community meant fostering children who needed a safe home, and a young person who had his whole life ahead of him,” the department said in a statement.

Xavier had five prior arrests for aggravated assaults.
