Suspect identified in deadly shooting in Surfside Beach area

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – One person was killed in a shooting Thursday night in the Cross Gate Villas parking lot in the Surfside Beach area, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler.

The shooting happened shortly before 10 p.m. on Maddington Place Drive, which is off Deerfield Links Drive.

Fowler identified the victim is 33-year-old Michael W. Pennington III, who died on the scene from a gunshot wound.

According to Fowler the victim was from the Myrtle Beach area.

One person was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Officials with the Horry County Police Department have identified him as 20-year-old Anijah Robert Yarnell, of Myrtle Beach.

Yarnell is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
