He is facing several felony counts, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, kidnapping, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and unlawful restraint. The child is identified as 8-year-old Mark Edward Mason. #BREAKING: Charges were just filed against Keith Burley including several felony charges such as criminal homicide, aggravated assault, kidnapping, etc @KDKA pic.twitter.com/TdgCbDAwfo — MEGHAN SCHILLER (@MeghanKDKA) July 9, 2019 Police believe Burley fatally stabbed Mason late Monday, sometime before 11 p.m., at a home on High Street in Union Township. WATCH: Burley’s Arrest — Police tell KDKA the call came in at first as a kidnapping and “rolling domestic dispute,” which means a dispute was occurring inside a vehicle between Burley and his girlfriend, 36-year-old Maram Saada. The woman had her two children inside the car with Burley. Trp Jim Long explains, “There was an argument with something to do with the cell phones. It got physical and it went from words to physical abuse.” Police say Saada exited the vehicle at the New Castle Fire Department after being assaulted by Burley. #NEW: This is the area along S. Jefferson St in front of the fire station. Police say the mother of the 2 kids (who is suspect Keith Burley’s girlfriend) exited the car in this spot. Police say Burley then drove her 2 kids back to High Street & allegedly killed the one. @KDKA pic.twitter.com/VFCPHU1XAP — MEGHAN SCHILLER (@MeghanKDKA) July 9, 2019 “The female that was involved with the domestic in New Castle City was his current girlfriend, and the two children belonged to that woman,” said Tpr. James Long, of Pennsylvania State Police. Three other children witnessed the stabbing, including the boy’s brother, along with a 15-year-old and another 8-year-old. According to the criminal complaint, the surviving children told police that Burley was yelling, “Die!” during the stabbing. The other children were not injured, according to police. Trp Long says, “He committed the murder with a knife the kids got a glimpse of it and they did the best they could get help.” State police say Mason’s 7-year-old brother was able to run out of the house and to a neighbor’s home. It was that neighbor who called police. Burley managed to escape before officers arrived, and Mason was pronounced dead at the scene. ![]() Burley’s cousin Andre Burley finds it all hard to believe. #NEW: I just learned that suspect Keith Burley’s 3rd degree murder sentence was for 19-38 years behind bars. The crime happened in 1999. I’m told he had a prior criminal history back then as well. The source said he was paroled in March. @KDKA pic.twitter.com/3QyYxsOijs — MEGHAN SCHILLER (@MeghanKDKA) July 9, 2019 Burley is currently on parole from another homicide conviction and Andre says, “He was institutionalized and he just wasn’t right in the head.” “He’s only been out a month or two. He has done like 25 years in jail, he just recently came home. It wasn’t that child’s time. It wasn’t worth that. I don’t know what he was thinking in his head to take a child’s life. I guess that’s what he wanted to do to make him feel better.” Tpr. Long told KDKA that Burley just got out of jail and is on parole for other homicide charges. |

‘I Want My Son Remembered A Hero,’ Father Of 8-Year-Old Boy Killed In Stabbing Speaks Out July 10, 2019 at 4:20 pm NEW CASTLE (KDKA) — Police in New Castle say an 8-year-old boy died Monday night at the hands of a previously-convicted murderer. Keith Burley, 43, faces charges of homicide, aggravated assault and kidnapping after police say he stabbed Mark “Markie” Mason to death inside a Union Township home late Monday night, police said. On Wednesday, the boy’s father sat down with KDKA’s Meghan Schiller. Mark Mason said he warned his children’s mother to not allow Burley, her new boyfriend, around his children. Burley was paroled in March after being sentenced for third-degree murder back in 1999. “I want my son remembered a hero and not a victim,” Mason said. Markie’s father said he wants his son to be remembered for who he was and not for what happened to him. “I want everyone to know that my son fought,” Mason said. “My son fought him, and he just wasn’t strong enough. How can an 8-year-old fight a 43-year-old man with a knife?” Mason reached out to KDKA to tell Markie’s story and to talk about the heroic actions of Markie’s younger brother, 7-year-old Matthew. “You tried and you got away and you threw a chair at him. I’m so proud of you,” Mason said as he pulled Matthew in for a kiss. Mason said he wants the community to see his young son. He also want to acknowledge how Matthew did everything to help his older brother during the attack. ![]() |
