Another top DOE official is leaving Richard Carranza’s team

Department of Education Deputy Chancellor Hydra Mendoza is exiting the department.

A former colleague of Schools Chancellor Richard "Ay!" Carranza from his time in San Francisco, Mendoza was hired last year and had been one of the DOE’s more visible faces during her brief tenure in New York.

“While Hydra’s a systems thinker who’s put structures in place to sustain the progress she’s already made, we will be very sorry to see her go,” Carranza said in a statement.

It was not immediately clear what prompted her departure, but she will be returning to the Bay Area.

The Carranza recruit was tapped to fill the newly formed role of deputy chancellor for community empowerment, partnerships and communications and was earning $231,699.

Mendoza is the second member of Carranza’s inner circle to depart since his arrival.

Former senior staffer Abram Jimenez, who was hired on at the DOE despite a checkered history, left his post over the summer.

Another former California colleague of Carranza’s, Jimenez had previously resigned from an assistant principal position in San Diego after investigators discovered financial irregularities during his tenure.

Mendoza was a prominent figure at the DOE over the past year and was often tasked with coordinating parent town hall meetings with Carranza and Mayor de Blasio.

“I am deeply grateful to her for moving across the country to lead this important work, and I wish her the absolute best as she returns to California,” Carranza said.

Before coming to New York, Mendoza most recently served as a mayoral deputy chief of staff in San Francisco.

She had also served as education adviser to California Governor Gavin Newsom from 2005-2011 while he was San Francisco mayor.
