Philly's Homicide Count Hit 353 last year... - Philadelphia Has Gone To Hell In A Handbasket

What (pray tell) are the racial demographics of the "The City of Brotherly Love"
The largest concentrations of native-born blacks are in Germantown, North Philadelphia west of Germantown Avenue, the Point Breeze neighborhood of South Philadelphia, parts of Southwest Philadelphia, and West Philadelphia.
Together these neighborhoods have a population of about 610,000 and are roughly 82% black; making it the 4th largest predominantly black area in the United States after Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, Detroit, and South Side Chicago.

Philadelphia has one of the largest ethnic African American / native black populations in the country,
tracing their ancestry to descendants of African slaves from the US south.

According to the most recent ACS, the racial composition of Philadelphia was:
Black or African American: 42.27%
White: 41.19%

Philadelphia Police Identify 3 Men Shot, Killed In Separate Shootings On New Year’s Day
By CBS3 Staff
January 2, 2020 at 12:45 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Three men who were shot and killed in separate shootings in Philadelphia on New Year’s Day have been identified. Police say 41-year-old Eric Miller was gunned down in West Philadelphia while 24-year-old Javon Cooper and 27-year-old Malik Milburn were killed in a triple shooting in Frankford.

In total, six people were shot as 2020 got off to a violent start in the city.

Just before noon on New Year’s Day, Miller was Philadelphia’s first homicide victim of the year. The 41-year-old man was shot in the chest and back on North Hobart Street, near 59th and Arch Streets.

Neighbors there denounced the violence.

“Just the first day of the year and it’s really senseless. It’s a shame. It’s like, Lord, when is it going to stop?” Germaine Gordon said.

Just two hours later, Cooper and Milburn died in a triple shooting on the 4700 block of Griscom Street in Frankford. Acting Philadelphia Police Commissioner Christine Coulter says it all stemmed from a fight.

“Two males were involved in a fistfight and that went on for a few minutes and then one of the people, obviously a friend of the male who we believe was losing the fight at that time, pulled out a gun and started firing into the group,” Coulter said.

Police say a 32-year-old woman who was an innocent bystander was also shot and is recovering from gunshot wounds to the arm and hand.

By nightfall, a third shooting in North Philadelphia left a 27-year-old man fighting for his life. It happened on the 2200 block of North Cleveland Street, just before 7 p.m. A 21-year-old man was also shot but is expected to be OK.

Coulter says she believes all three shootings are solvable with help from the public.

“When murders happen at noon and 2 in the afternoon, lots of people know what happened and they need to be, homicide should be filled with witnesses today. We just need them to step up and say they want their neighborhoods back,” Coulter said.

The new year continued a disturbing trend from last year. In 2019, there were 356 homicides in Philadelphia — the highest number since 2007.

A 15-year-old boy died when he was shot in broad daylight Saturday in North Philadelphia, one of various deaths in another violent weekend for the city.

The boy was struck shortly after 1:30 p.m. on the 3100 block of Rosewood Street, police said. He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:47 p.m.

Police did not immediately make any arrests or recover a weapon.
Local

Around 6:15 p.m., a man was stabbed to death near Rittenhouse Square in Center City. Police arrested a suspect in the case.

The stabbing preceded another fatal shooting in which a 24-year-old man was struck once in the head around 7:30 p.m. in the 200 block of S. Edgewood Street in West Philadelphia, police said. Police did manage to arrest a suspect in the West Philadelphia shooting.

The violence continued in Kensington when a man in his 20s was gunned down around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Rush and Amber streets, police said. The suspect in that shooting was last seen running north on Rush street.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a 31-year-old man died when he was shot three times in the head on the 4700 block of N. 5th Street in Feltonville, police said. No arrests were made or weapons recovered in that case.

In the city's Overbrook neighborhood, another 24-year-old man was gunned down on the 2400 block of 54th Street shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday. He suffered multiple wounds to his body, police said. A white sedan with apparent bullet holes in the windshield could be seen at the scene. Police did not make any arrests, but they did find a gun on the deceased.

Philadelphia continues to struggle with homicides, with the city recording 356 slayings last year, the highest tally since 2007. As of 11:59 p.m. Saturday, seven people had been killed in the city, according to Philadelphia Police Department data, a number that was sure to climb following Sunday's violence.

New Police Chief Danielle "Bug Eyes" Outlaw has said gun violence will be a top priority in her administration.

Total Number Of Homicides Rises To 14 After 7 Killed During Bloody Weekend In Philadelphia
By Crystal Cranmore
January 13, 2020 at 8:02 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A bloody weekend in Philadelphia leaves seven people dead, raising the total number of homicides this year to 14 in just 13 days. Police are looking at surveillance video and processing evidence, but they are hoping witnesses will come forward and help solve these homicides.

Police rushed to the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia after they say a 35-year-old man was shot in the head and killed. Another man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. It happened at 30th Street and Susquehanna Avenue around 10:41 a.m. Sunday night, marking the city’s seventh homicide of the weekend.

A few hours earlier, bullets went flying into a white sedan, killing a 24-year-old man sitting inside, according to police. The gunfire erupted near St. Joseph’s University on the 2400 block of 54th Street.

“Because so many of the families have been here for so long, we want to know if there’s any threats near us, you know?” neighborhood resident Stephen Cox said.

Authorities say the victim was not associated with the university. Officials say the gunman got away in a blue sedan.

Patrolling officers found a 31-year-old man fatally shot three times in the head in Philadelphia’s Feltonville neighborhood. The shooting happened on the 4700 block of North 5th Street around 1:25 a.m. Sunday.

A 24-year-old man died after police say he was shot in the head in West Philadelphia. The incident happened shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday on the 200 block of South Edgewood Street.

Police were also called to the 3100 block of Rosewood Street in North Philadelphia where they say a 15-year-old boy was shot in the chest and killed around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

“These young people are murdering each other at a rate that’s approaching genocide, over nothing,” resident Bill Donohue said.

The 9-1-1 calls poured in from West Philadelphia to Kensington and Center City on an unusually warm Saturday afternoon in January.

“You can see there’s plenty of foot traffic and vehicle traffic,” a Rittenhouse police department officer told CBS3.

Police say a 35-year-old man was fatally stabbed outside Luke’s Lobster House at 17th and Sansom Streets around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators say they have a suspect in custody.

Another deadly shooting happened near Amber and East Rush Streets just after 11:25 p.m. Saturday night. Officials say a 24-year-old man was shot twice in the head and once in the left side of his chest and one time in the back.

At least eight other victims were injured in shootings over the weekend, including an 18-month-old who suffered a graze wound to the head.

The weekend violence has prompted potato nigger Mayor Jim "Banana Nose" Kenney to take to Twitter, urging anyone with information to contact detectives.

“This horrific violence must end,” Kenney tweeted. “@PhillyPolice and CCIP workers are out in the impacted communities, but we need help from everyone to solve these crimes and keep our neighborhoods safe. If you have information about a crime, please submit a tip.”

Anyone with information should contact police at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or text PPD TIP (773847). Tips can also be submitted anonymously online. All tips are confidential.

3 Killed, 4 Others Shot in Another Day of Violence in Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s violent start to the year continued Wednesday with a triple shooting, double shooting, deadly stabbing and the discovery of a dead body
By David Chang • Published January 15, 2020 • Updated 1 hour ago

Philadelphia’s violent start to the year continued Wednesday with a triple shooting, double shooting, deadly stabbing and the discovery of a dead body.

An unidentified gunman opened fire on two men on the 100 block of North Ruby Street at 4:56 p.m. A man in his 30’s was shot once in the right hip while a second man, also in his 30’s, was shot twice in the chest. Both men were taken to Presbyterian Hospital. One victim is stable while the other is in critical condition.

About 20 minutes later, a gunman opened fire on a 16-year-old boy, 25-year-old man and a 20-year-old man on the 2600 block of Lehigh Avenue.
Local

The 20-year-old man was shot multiple times throughout his body. He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:54 p.m.

The 16-year-old boy was shot twice in the abdomen while the 25-year-old was shot six times throughout the body. Both of the surviving victims were also taken to Temple and are both in critical condition.

Around the same time of the two shootings, the body of an unidentified man was discovered inside a black duffel bag on the train tracks behind a home on Cobbs Creek Parkway and Angora Terrace in Southwest Philadelphia.

The discovery was made while police were searching for 20-year-old Jimmy Mao, who was last seen in the same area on Dec. 29 of last year. Police have not yet determined if the body is that of Mao’s.

Police are also searching for an acquaintance of Mao’s, a 16-year-old boy who was reported missing by his family on Jan. 11.

Both Mao and the teen are linked to a 17-year-old boy who is considered a person of interest in the stabbing death of his foster mother, a 64-year-old East Germantown woman who was found dead inside her home Wednesday morning.

Wednesday's deadly shooting and stabbing bring the city’s total number of homicides to 21 so far this year. There were seven reported homicides at this time last year, which ultimately saw a total of 356 murders, the highest annual number in Philadelphia since 2007.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has spoken repeatedly on the violent start to 2020, which includes two people killed and four hurt during five shootings on Monday and seven people, including a child and a teen boy, killed in the city over the weekend.

“The other issue is people shooting at people holding children,” Kenney said. “Even organized crime would wait to get you alone. And these guys don’t seem to care. So we have to get those guys off the street and we have to intervene with the young people who are at risk both of being shot and being shooters and trying to intervene in their lives to get them where they need to be.”

New Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw has said gun violence will be a top priority in her administration. She takes office next month.

“She’s going to have to implement some of the same things we’re doing now and just do it better and do it more efficiently and more effectively,” Kenney said.

There are additional resources for people or communities that have endured gun violence. Further information can be found here.

Body of missing teen found in bin in South Philadelphia amid human trafficking investigation: Sources

1/17/20
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Sources tell Action News authorities have positively identified the body of a woman found in a plastic bin Thursday night as police investigated a possible case of human trafficking in a South Philadelphia home.

According to sources, the body is that of 18-year-old Erin Schweikert who was reported missing in September. Authorities have notified her family.

Authorities said the body was found in the basement of a home on the 2100 block of Porter Street.

Sources tell Action News, at this time, her death appears to be accidental.

However, sources say someone will likely be charged with abuse of corpse as no one notified authorities that Schweikert had died - instead, they say, her body was placed in the basement.

Law enforcement sources tells Action News the investigation so far has revealed the 18-year-old may have died of an overdose.

Officials with the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office arrived to the home Thursday night to serve a robbery warrant. The Philadelphia Police Department's Special Victims Unit joined the sheriff's office at the scene, working on a tip for a case of possible human trafficking.

"Special Victims Unit was coming out here with our sheriffs to deal with an issue of human trafficking. They were looking for a missing female who was approximately 18 years old," Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal said.

Once at the scene, authorities found five people, three males and two females. Some lived at the home, according to Bilal.

Action News is told one of the females was listed on the warrant for not appearing in court for a robbery charge. The female and the four others were taken into custody.

Authorities began to search the home and discovered the body of the woman in a plastic bin in the basement.

Neighbors that spoke with Action News said they felt something was amiss inside the home, but nothing to the extent of what police found.

"I just heard rumors about this particular family. Rumors always float around," a neighbor said.

Earlier reports from authorities had said the body was found partially dismembered. Sources say that was not the case.
