The incident happened early Friday morning at a home on NE 97th St. Rd., in the town of Anthony.

According to deputies, Lavonte Powell was playing with a gun, twirling it around his fingers, when the loaded gun went off, striking Kelsey Smith in her head.

Powell immediately want to get help and called 911, however, Smith died from her injuries.

Deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting took place shortly before 1 a.m. Friday at what appeared to be an abandoned mobile home on 1676 Northeast 97th Street Road, where the victim, identified as Kelsey Lynn Smith, and the suspect had been living.

When investigators arrived at the home, the suspect told them he and the victim had been living there without electricity next to the home where the victim’s family lives.
